Entertainment Weekly
Their self-seriousness comes with a melodic tenderness that's rare in the genre.
60
AllMusic
The mostly mid-tempo songs plod along, usually turning to a screeching lead guitar over chunky chording to differentiate the choruses.
40
Rolling Stone
It's when Staind crank down the sludge and slacken the tempos that things get heavy in a bad way.
40
The Guardian
How can this dork-metal silliness still be going on in 2005?
40
NOW Magazine
The whole neo-grunge-slash-softcore-metal by not-so-smart-seeming guys who wear their hearts on their sleeve seems like the new roots rock.
30
NME
More over-produced introspection.

God Is in the TV
Your band disgusts me.

Gigwise
Each to their own but I’d rather listen to fingernails being scraped down a blackboard or even Nickelback.

Hot Press
There probably is something going on here beneath the surface, but when that surface is so dull and lifeless who can be bothered to find out?

THE POST-GRUNGE CHALLENGE - #016

It's been a while (no pun intended) since I've done one of these Post-Grunge challenges, so I'm not even sure what episode I ended on. I think it's 16 now though. Anyways, you might be asking, why tf are you reviewing a random Staind album? And I mean I just want to listen through their full discography to not only have the knowledge of their music before their new album drops on September 15th, but also to find out if they really deserve the hate they get or ... read more

This record is one of the most "decent" records I've ever listened to. Is it bad? No. Is it good? Not really. But it stays alright, no big dips but no big jumps in quality, just okay throughout. Right Here is the best track and feels like a much more genuine track than So Far Away, and I enjoyed the heavier moments on Paper Jesus and King of All Excuses. This is shows a side of Staind that was not present throughout most of 14 Shades, the writing is much better and the band has a ... read more

Edit: 68-74. I don’t think I gave this album enough credit with as many good songs as it has.

Lower than 14 Shades of Grey, but not by that much, Chapter V has strong emotional honesty, but familiar themes. It’s polished but predictable production and a few standout tracks such as everything changes, and cross to bear carry the project. There’s mid-tempo fatigue and it lacks the impact of their peak work. Overall, it’s still above average and nearly solid.
