I mean literally the beginning and start of nu-metal happened on this album. The new sound they made with tuned-down guitars was groundbreaking. This is emotionally intense and honest while also having innovative musicianship. The atmosphere is cohesive and the influence on bands such as slipknot and linkin park cannot be overstated. A truly amazing debut and album.
Heavy Metal overall, really didn’t impress me that much. Most of the songs gelled together and there wasn’t much discrepancy between many of the tracks. I will say though, the songwriting is emotionally distinctive and the vocal performance by Cameron Winter is captivating. The arrangements are creative and genre blending and there are definitely some emotional highs on songs like $0. I do ultimately think this is not quite consistent enough for elite status though. Either way, it ... read more
Yess, Bowie does an amazing drums and bass album. I do ultimately wish this kept up with the first half but the second half still wasn’t bad at all. Bowie successfully embraces many unique influences and the production is both creative and strong. Several standout songs elevate the album and Bowie’s enthusiasm is evident throughout. I think a few tracks keep it from reaching a higher tier though. Overall: It’s an amazing, very good, bold, and inventive project and one of David ... read more
This was shaping up to be a 90+ album through the first few tracks, but ultimately I thought the second half just did not stay as consistent. I did like Cameron Winter’s vocals for the most part and the somewhat “weird” moments in a couple of songs was overall a positive. The album constantly reinvents itself without losing momentum and Cameron Winter delivers one of the most distinctive vocal performances in modern indie rock. The songwriting is packed with memorable peaks ... read more
While being a step up from Black Tie, White Noise, Outside is just overall weird and a different album experience as a whole. The segues are all mid or even bad but they’re coupled with some actually amazing songs. This was an overall above average album listening experience but only a precursor to Earthling for me. Its ambition is bigger than its execution and the atmosphere is incredible. The songwriting is inconsistent and its influence aged better than the album itself. The highs are ... read more
Well now we get to the mid part of Bowies career. Earthling will be good but this just wasn’t and the fact the best song is a 72 is insane for a musician like Bowie even with worse albums that he’s made. To be fair, this is a step up from Never Let Me Down but that’s not a hard thing to be. The production is very locked into the early 90’s and there are some strong ideas present, but inconsistent execution. The guest-heavy approach weakens Bowie’s presence at times ... read more
