Drowned in Sound

It retains all the elements that are recognisably Squarepusher but manages to filter them through this newly polished lens and thrusts it into a new, invigorating stream of light.

Uncut
This new project--fronting a five-piece band made up of mystery members who apparently contacted him on spec--has reined in his more wayward tendencies with positive results.

All this adds up to a qualified success, but it will certainly split opinion among his fans.

It's an excellent way for Jenkinson to branch out and try something different -- his playing and programming is definitely up to his high standard -- but aside from the sweet retro vibes, it's hardly a classic.

The Needle Drop
I like some of the songs here, but what's keeping me from loving the album is its tinny sound and its awkward mix.

Whether hard or soft, there's nothing here that you can't hear executed with more joie de vivre by a half-dozen Frenchmen.

Not for the first time, you find yourself wondering whether Squarepusher is taking the piss.

I wasn't fond of the Shobaleader One EP. It wasn't good. Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator is no better.

Squarepusher has some really great ideas on this little dream project of his. I actually really like some of the songs on here, but it's such a shame that the mixing is too horrid to bring these songs to life.

I like a good deal of the songs on this album and I think it does some things smartly by following up some of the directions taken on Just A Souvenir. However I do find myself wanting more here because the sound of this album is a bit too sanitised and flat for my liking. It's unfortunate because it does kind of sour some of the tunes here - however, with that said, the album is very much lifted by having lots of great melodies and musical ideas, and this applies to a majority of tracks. ... read more

I find it funny it kind of sounds as if Squarepusher were Daft Punk. It's nice to listen to, once again perpetrating Tom's fixation with placing the best song as the first one in the album, but it's cool nonetheless. Never been the one to ask in terms of jazz fusion and it does kind of escape my realm but needless to say it was nice.
