Rolling Stone

On Collapse Into Now, they sound like they'd rather be a band than a legend, which must be why they keep pushing on.

80
Under the Radar
Here, the 51-year-old is comfortable in his role as an elder statesman, as are guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills on their most self-aware record since the departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1998.

Consequence of Sound

Collapse Into Now is the band’s best record since New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

80
No Ripcord

The resulting effort is one that is distinctly R.E.M.: pure sonic goodness.

Collapse Into Now is a fine album, and one that's far better than any band together for three decades has any right to be.

Pitchfork

Bits and pieces from every great R.E.M. record are present on Collapse Into Now, but the ease with which the band once combined these elements is now tenuous and hard-fought.

Drowned in Sound

Even as part timers, nobody should be surprised that R.E.M. can still make excellent music, though perhaps great albums now elude them.

60
PopMatters

Instead of being focused on a goal as Accelerate was, Collapse into Now finds the trio slipping back into bad habits by indulging itself.

I Was Wrong About REM: Part 15. The Finale.

There’s a sharp sense of finality to this album with tracks like That Someone Is You, Oh My Heart and It Happened Today. This feeling is balanced out by the faster songs which feel like a sonic continuation of Accelerate in some aspects. I really like this pacing of the album, it makes ... read more

On September 21st, 2011, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe would issue news about their disbandment out of nowhere. They decided to do what no other band has done: Shake hands, and walk away as friends. R.E.M.'s farewell album, Collapse Into Now, is a satisfying conclusion to their discography. There were many hints to this being their final album, down to the album cover. Michael Stipe is waving goodbye to us all, and nobody noticed. While Accelerate mostly stuck to the same sound, ... read more

R.E.M. hater listens to the R.E.M. discography 15/?

Welp, that’s it. It wasn’t their “final” album in the traditional sense, there was no announcement beforehand, only after, but this was them throwing in the towel. And they REALLY need to. They hadn’t made a real great album since Monster… and that ... read more
