Half live and half studio album, Six will never interest classic-era stalwarts, but Jenkins and drummer John Marshall lead old-timers Mike Ratledge and Hugh Hopper through some nifty fusion exercises that fans of the genre (and obscure '70s music of every kind) might find very enjoyable

I dont think this album needs to be this long. It's well made overall but it just doesn't defend the runtime at all, it looses focus and steam quickly and in my opinion just has lots of filler, a couple of great moments are cool as fuck tho and the whole thing is again technically great. The less and less familiar lineup really tends to lose identity that made Soft Machine one of the most original and stunning bands ever.

After Fifth, saxophonist Elton Dean left Soft Machine and was replaced by Karl Jenkins of Nucleus. Jenkins would gradually assume a leading role in the band, steering its musical direction.
If I recall correctly, Mike Ratledge mentioned in an interview that this moment in time was the point when his enthusiasm for Soft Machine began to fade, a shift that’s noticeable in how subdued his contributions are on this album.

Although I love the literal soft machine on the album cover, this is always a pretty painful experience to go through for me. Once Wyatt leaves the band the quality of playing doesn;t change so much as everythign becomes too peppy. 'Third' sounds very colourful but with any underlying mystery and moodiness gone the saturation becomes too bright, like a bag of haribo.
