The juxtaposition of white-boy geekiness with swaggering hip-hop posturing forms the core of The Lonely Island’s smart-ass take on pop music, but the trio is also distinguished by obsessive cultural specificity on its sophomore effort, Turtleneck & Chain.
This second album confirms Andy Samberg and co as talents mighty enough to equal the superstar names that join them in their Saturday Night Live skits.
Now, two years after Incredibad, a debut that collected many of the group’s greatest, previously televised hits, comes Turtleneck & Chain, a perfectly acceptibad follow-up.
Turtleneck & Chain shows that the boys in the Lonely Island aren’t solely reliant on viral videos and buzz, but deeply affectionate fans. They don’t make mockeries; they joke because they love.
For the most part, though, these are good songs with jokes in them, not jokes with songs attached.
This is a comedy album that just happens to have more catchy songs than your average pop radio album.
While Turtleneck & Chain, like Incredibad before it, is a tad uneven, The Lonely Island are still largely deserving of admiration.
Turtleneck and Chain has some pretty memorable tacks on it, to be honest. Some of these might be the best this comedy rap outfit has ever penned.
Another Lonely Island review! And sooner than expected I think!! This album was the first Lonely Island album I listened to, and it has a very special place in my heart (just like the rest of their albums because I love all of them), so I wanted to give it a long review. This is my third super long review for an album of theirs, the first being their debut album, “Incredibad”, and the second being their third album, “The Wack Album”.
Did this review a bit differently! ... read more
A step up from their first album, still not their peak, that'll be their next work, but here it's just an amazing showing of the boys capacities of comedy and music, ther are some low points, but overall is a good record, can't wait to listen to the next one again.
I mean its alright, but holy fuck Classy Skit 1 is so fucking bad, it just doesn't need to exist
With a lot of comedy albums, some of the jokes won’t hit, whereas others will. Highlights include Rocky, which sounds like it could’ve been a Weird Al song, and I Just Had Sex. However, then we just have songs like “Trouble on Dookie Island” which really dates the comedy of this album.
