This record is fun in a way that Flying Lotus records choose not to be and satisfying in a way that most of his peers' fail to be.

Consequence of Sound

The fluidity of Ellison’s production work is everywhere throughout Captain Murphy’s first mixtape release, Duality, garnished with the same seamless style of FlyLo’s songs, only with more morphing soundscapes than individual tracks.

NOW Magazine
Decidedly NSFW, the rapper’s as comfortable rhyming over dusty soul samples as he is over TNGHT’s bass-heavy Bugg’n.

The Needle Drop
Captain Murphy's debut project is pretty impressive, and boats some of the best hip hop production you'll hear this year. The most glaring issue that faces this project into the future: Lyrics.

Flying Lotus has never been one to fit in with the crowd, and anyone who's heard even the littlest of his material would be able to tell of that. Through psychedelic production and his innovative ways of flipping samples, he's consistently proven to be way ahead of the curve compared to the rest. Despite him producing (and also rapping) under a different name, his tendency to make inventive, genre-bending music hasn't gone anywhere. It runs for a little more than half an hour, but manages to ... read more

This tape further proves why Flying Lotus is one of the greatest artists of all time. Flylo goes under the rap moniker Captain Murphy to create what feels like an electronic, horrorcore tribute to Madvillain and Quasimoto. Murphy's rapping is similar to that of Earl and DOOM's style with multiple syllable rhyming and abstract lyricism with a sense of dark humor. Hell, I originally thought it was Earl rapping the first time I heard this tape. The production feature list is stacked as well, with ... read more

High, horny, and power-hungry, the villainous Captain Murphy is a depraved megalomaniac hellbent on becoming a cult leader in the easiest way possible - by becoming a successful musician. Thankfully, Murphy is fictional, crafted by the always-imaginative Flying Lotus so that he could get away with cosplaying DOOM and rapping about fucking fat girls. Funnily enough, the execution on this tape is capital-E Excellent, carrying the listener through a hazy, adult swim-esque adventure that never ... read more

As a pretty massive Flylo fan, I'm surprised it took me this long to expirience a Captain Murpjy album. But the wait was absolutely worth it, this is incredible. By far some of the best beats I've ever heard (real shout out to Between Friends & Gone Fishing), along with some solid rapping from Flotus himself. My only main gripes are that the songs are too short to really sink in (I think songs like The Ritual would be 10s if they weren't tiny), and also it forgot about ... read more

Holy... The vibe I got when I first turned this album on was Take Me To Your Leader, so my expectations were already high, but it did not disappoint at all. Nerdy bar after nerdy bar above perfect production, just an amazing album from end to end. Not a single bad verse on this entire album, felt so much longer than it was in a good way. For my first listen score on this album, I give it an Amazing.
