The Californian MC grips you in a hip-hop mind-meld, his esoteric lyrics leaving fans privy to the very depths of his subconscious. On Thumbs, that journey into his twisted psyche is fraught with subdued, murky synths and paranoid verses, as if you could hear his every panicked thought while he drifts off into a nightmare.
With his new project titled Thumbs, experimental hip hop artist Busdriver comes through with some afterthoughts to supplement the stellar ideas he explored on his last full-length album, Perfect Hair.
Busdriver is an acquired taste in rap. His of-kilter flow and strange voice doesn’t click with everyone. For better or worse, he manages to hide his quirks here pretty well. Because of that it’s his most accessible project, but definitely not his best work. Sonically, the pinnacle of LA beat scene Art Rap ish. Low End Theory Jersey Club, Project Blew Bap, Good Life hymns. Driver uses these wonk-infused beats to smooth his delivery. Driver is clever. Driver knows that. The whole tape goes down real easy, but does rumble your stomach upon digestion, of which there is much to do.
