Still Listening
‘Less’ revels in space, indulging in soporific slowcore that feels empty whilst profoundly full of life’s experience.

Loud and Quiet

If Return was waxwing ambition, then Less is Icarus’s fall. Not the sound and spectacle of TNT exploding, but the loneliness of waking from a deep sleep screaming. In its attempts to contain, Less is less sprawling, less capacious, less soaring – but more tense, more caustic, and more close to the bone.

While the bulk of the evidence makes Less a superior album to Return, overall it is a marginal improvement which finds deathcrash in familiar territory.

Pitchfork
The London slowcore band’s second album is a gentle refinement with an atmosphere of loss.

AllMusic
At times, the emotionally opaque sentiments and slow-to-congeal arrangements give the songs a somewhat unfinished feeling, like the band is circling tentatively around their ideas but not quite able to land on a complete statement.

On Less, deathcrash aims for the gut-wrenching heights of Low and Codeine, but comes closer to reaching them when they lean into their emo influences.

Slowcore is a genre that's very near and dear to my heart. I Could Live In Hope by Low will always be one of the greatest pieces of art ever released imo. So I was very curious about this, obviously. I haven't heard much from Deathcrash, although I'm pretty sure I've checked out a few tracks on their last album, but I can't recall any of them.

And immediately with the first track, I knew I was going to like this. This gives me that OG Slowcore vibe that I love. Low, Red House Painters, and ... read more

There's something about this album I really enjoy, but the things is, for the most part I find this record forgettable even though I have listened to it several times. I swear I don't have onset dementia, but it just goes out one ear and out the other. Emotionally I've been impacted by each listen, and I feel like I'm being enveloped by the melodic slow guitar, drums, and vocals which are incredibly relaxing and heartfelt with lyrics like " All the trembling pain, the sickness formed of a ... read more

Less is more tho

Thank you for the rec as always @mike_drop! I’m not sure why I didn’t hear about this one, considering I’m a big Slowcore fan. I have to say, I’m pretty impressed. This is just some beautiful stuff, with a lot of dynamics even with it being Slowcore. Very passionate vocals, and the instrumentation is stellar. Mix that together and you got a great record. I think Distance Song is my favorite here, even though it’s very close with Pirouette. The ... read more

The new deathcrash record does try really hard to build up incredible levels of tension, but in the end the buildups tend to be a little bit too oozy and the releases are generally few and far between. That being said, Less is a very well crafted album of polished musicians who take delicate care of each note they play. The lyrics are poignant and powerfully delivered, despite the slowness and intentional strain. It certainly is tense, and definitely refined. This is a record that a band can be ... read more
