Wale, as curator, gathers guests on most of his 14 tracks. The majority are destined for the club, many themed around objects of his desire.

Five albums in, Wale remains one of the more mercurial talents in rap, with SHINE serving as further evidence of his abilities as an MC and a reminder of his lyrical radiance.

Shine isn’t dark. But it feels like an exercise in avoidance as if Wale took the advice to ease up too far.

AllMusic

It should be enough to retain the listeners who strongly prefer the more lyrical, less hedonistic aspects of the Wale discography.

No Ripcord

This project is not particularly awful, nor is it impressive. It is simply bland and tiresome to listen to.

Just take me back to the days when my biggest worry was a shitty Wale album.

Wale's always been a rapper I admired because he had all the attributes of a great artist but it never fully connected.
And on this album at least he stuck to a code, making the most generic music he could, and it kind of completed that task.
If you wanna know what 2017 pop rap/radio music sounded like, Wale has you covered with 'Shine'.
Always loved this album cover though.

Review #802 I'm gonna listen to Wales last 3 records before the new one cuz every is saying that it's his best in a decade so I'm gonna really see about that. Anyways to start it off, this is weak as hell & easily his worst. Wale sounds extremely bored & it's extremely basic plus there are some real bad songs. There are some highlights on this but they're extremely rare. Here's the track ratings.

Even before this album, Wale was one of the least interesting rappers walking the planet, but with the release of "Shine", he gave up on making anything of value or substance and dove head first into making contemporary pop rap trash, with tons of mediocre features, awful hooks, sellout beats and no strong or original sound pulling all of it together
His singing is quite terrible also, which ruins pretty much every single one of the songs here, even if the verses surrounding them were ... read more

on this episode of AOTY Users hate fun we have Shine by Wale, a project that is super fun to listen to and i honestly still enjoy just as much as i did when it came out.

Running Back was my shit back when this album released and it still is if i'm being honest lmao, yeah this album is SO 2010's pop rap and it shows in every bit of the album but it's just such a fun listen that i can't bring myself to hate it, might be a guilty pleasure of mine but i think this is a solid ... read more

This is an album that suffered from feeling half baked at times. Too by the numbers at times, being saved by features, and overshadowed by other bigger releases during that time. It is a mid album. Some moments leave me wondering why Wale chose to chase the trend during that time. Definitely not the album to show people if you're a Wale apologist for some reason.
