Eels Time! sounds thoughtful, heartfelt, and warmly human in a way that's not typical for Everett and his cohorts.
With childhood friend Sean Coleman aboard to coax Brian Wilson-ness from the 1980s'-penned And You Run, and tunes as charming as Breezy Sweet Smile, let's be grateful that Eels Time! rolls on.
EELS TIME! is not the best record from EELS, but any fan of the band will enjoy their latest record a lot.
Listening to Eels’ 15th studio album, partly recorded in Dublin, you can draw a line back to the electro-shock of their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak.
On Eels Time!, Mark Oliver Everett offers up his many different temperaments and reminds us why he is cautiously optimistic despite the pervading melancholy.
Throughout his three-decade career, E has brought a hushed beauty to the act of staring into the abyss, and his use of space on EELS TIME! (all caps for added irony) makes this lonely guy seem that much more lost in space.
"Eels Time!" contents the great opener "Time" which is appropriate to promise an interesting and spellbounding album, already the 15th studio album of E (Mark Oliver Everett) with the band named Eels. Now one could ask oneself: "How much Eels does a guy need?" And one could rate "Eels Time!" under this particular perspective, because the full album doesn't live up with the opener in the long run. There's still the powerful and at times beautiful lyrics, from Everett. Alas, once again, it feels like another album being churned out, rather than crafted. A stronger effort than the previous two but altogether rather forgetful.
Nonetheless, this new album means I'll end up doing a deep dive into the earlier work which is always nostalgic and remarkable.
EELS TIME! (what a title huh?) is the next installment in the saga of EELS. First of all, hang on is that a bare foot on the cover? Mark Oliver Everett OnlyFans for feetpics when? Secondly, this just goes to show how profilic of a songwriter Everett really is and just like in the past, he manages to get out material for albums fast enough to keep the pace going.
