Xenobiotic - Dante
Angry Metal Guy
50

I jealously snatched Dante from the promo pit in the hope that Xenobiotic would treat me to another Mordrake. While Dante follows closely in that style, it’s a far less substantial record, too focused on executing its concept to introduce much musical interest and too overproduced to let those scraps of interesting music make an impact.

Revocation - Netherheaven
Angry Metal Guy
80

Expanding the dark romanticism of Deathless, Davidson, Bamberger and Pearson crank out the darkest, heaviest songs of their career together, never missing a beat.

First Fragment - Gloire éternelle
Angry Metal Guy
70

Despite being nonstop fun, Gloire Éternelle, like Dasein before it, is too generous with its charms to make them last, cheapening them through so much reproduction. That being said, it still fuckin’ rules.

Archspire - Bleed the Future
Angry Metal Guy
90

After listening to the record dozens of times over the past month, I keep coming back to it not to make notes or to consider it critically again, but just to witness it, finding something new to love every time. Archspire have outdone themselves, and it’s an absolute joy to hear.

Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
Angry Metal Guy
100
Ad Nauseam put everything they had into creating a record that truly synthesizes and transcends its influences.
Gaerea - Limbo
Angry Metal Guy
80
Though I might always be partial to the most expressionistic and abstract works of the genre, it’s tough to deny the appeal of smart, straightforward black metal that’s more fit for admiration than alienation. And I need not deny it; black metal is good, and Limbo is a great black metal record.
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still
Angry Metal Guy
80
Whether drawn to the source of the smoke for the first time today or more than a decade ago, you owe it to yourself to witness the latest flare from Ulcerate’s all-consuming flame.
Lorna Shore - Immortal
Angry Metal Guy
70
Lorna Shore’s combination of symphonic orchestration with the atmospheric trappings a la Fallujah makes for some incredible songs and cements the band as one of deathcore’s foremost innovators.
