Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction is a more stripped down sound compared to its predecessor, mirroring Metallica's shift from Thrash with it's self titled album. While I prefer Rust in Peace's thrashy technicality, this meat and potatoes version of Megadeth is iconic in its own right. The solo work is stellar, its melodic, heavy and tight. The production on the album is absolutely phenomenal as well.
While songs like Sweating Bullets and Symphony of Destruction are peak Megadeth, some of the ... read more

This record is best seen as the connecting moment between peace sells and rust in peace. Its not as good as either, but it has elements of both and has truly some shining moments. Mustaine's vocals and lyricism is even sharper than the previous record, however, the production is somehow muddier. Chris Poland's absence is obvious too because the lead work isnt nearly as good in this album. BUT, I will say Mustaine's solos are much better in this record. they sound less sloppy and much better ... read more

I ended up really enjoying this. Felt almost like a throwback to yeezus and even though it still carries Kanye's new religious influence, it is more subtle. If we can get verses like this with the kind of beats we had in JIK, I think we have our aoty

Megadeth came back with much stronger songwriting with Peace Sells. The Lyrical theme and vocal flow also see a massive upgrade. themes range from the occult, war, prisonbreak. Loved the vocal delivery on songs like Peace Sells and My last words. I also feel like Chris Poland's lead work is massively underrated in Megadeth's discography. It is absolutely brilliant and maybe even the best out of all Megadeth lead guitarists. I hadnt liked much of Mustaine's guitar solo work but the one in ... read more

This album was Megadeth's debut onto the thrash scene in 1985. It is obvious that the band's songwriting, as raw as it was at that point, was substantially above the level of their peers. Here are my impressions of the album upon first listen:
PROS: It started strong with the piano theme on Last Rites, but the song itself had juvenile lyrics and subpar mixing. I still dig the groove and riffs. I also really like the drum sound, but I feel like it's way at the front and pretty much outshines ... read more
