System of a Down - Toxicity
97

this has some of the best flow ive ever heard in an album, each song goes into the next one in the most perfect way possible. individually the tracks are masterpieces but as a cohesive album experience it's even better. unsurprisingly the hits are probably the best tracks but that's comparing an 11/10 to a 10/10. i think it is pretty much flawless in every way

i chased a crow - bring home a prize or die a husk
NR

new ep jumpscare. this is a very quick burst of very negative emotions that spilled out of me over the past couple days. it's not as fleshed out or climactic as shell but it is equally as, and at times more raw and vulnerable. made for the sake of catharsis and nothing else. listen at your discretion

Escape The Fate - Dying is Your Latest Fashion

this is annoyingly good. i think the user score for this would be in the green if ronnie wasn't on it

Yung Exile - ISMOKEDANOUNCEINSPRINGFIELD

yung exile's newest ep is a haunting and enveloping experience that immediately sucked me into its hazy atmosphere. it feels like the main character is drowning in their regrets, but in a way that is mature, introspective and ultimately a step towards healing. the choice to mix the vocals in such a way that the lyrics are pretty much indistinguishable works hugely in this project's favor, it adds an extra layer of haze that contributes a lot to the atmosphere and themes. but then you ... read more

damn this is crazy good thanks for the rec dalton. it's everything i love about all of these genres. please listen to this it deserves a lot of attention

RichaadEB - BLACK KNIFE

this feels like the most appropriate way to cover this song. bonus points for actually replicating the way the melody starts bending all over the place during that one part by using a whammy bar and lots of slides. also love the way he incorporated lost girl for a second. check this out if you like cool metal covers of deltarune songs

samlrc - [untitled]

this ep is disgusting. it is and will always be one of the most brutal and realistic depictions of trans agony through music i've heard in my life. the shrillness of the strings, the hoarseness and pain in her voice, the buildup to everything falling apart in the end, all of it paints a picture so vivid and true that it just hurts to listen to. it's a project i desperately wish i didn't relate to, the cut to silence at the end never fails to make my stomach drop. i couldn't ... read more

American Football - Bad Moons

i didn't adore LP3's dream pop direction even though it was generally quite good and well executed but i think this is a waaaay better version of some of the stuff they were doing on that record. leaning fully into the post rock flavors their other records always had while keeping the dream pop atmosphere makes for a fantastic progression of their sound. this song is absolutely beautiful and emotionally gripping, im even more excited for the album than i was before now

Totorro - Home Alone

when it comes to math rock and post rock this album is a little too happy go lucky for my tastes cause i hate joy and fun and whimsy but i can't deny it's very infectious and well composed/performed. i listened to this a lot in high school so it has a nostalgic quality as well but i think that's also an inherent element of the music itself removed from my previous connection to it, just feels like a cheery summer break hanging out with friends and soaking in the light of life and ... read more

i can appreciate this ep way way more now that im like properly into hardcore music but i still think the lyrics and delivery are ass lol. the instrumentals are effortless in a vacuum but the corny don't mess with me attitude honestly just makes the whole thing feel very tryhard to me. gami has always been corny but the sheer sincerity and cutesy atmosphere of their other stuff manages to make it work. i just don't think it lands in this context. if this was instrumental ... read more

this album's mixing and general roughness won't be for everyone but it's definitely for me, i think these guys are incredibly underrated. i love the chaos and emotion and passion consistent through this whole record, i love the tempo and time signature changes every 30 seconds, i love the nostalgic sorta video gamey atmosphere (i know at least one band member is a sonic fan and that shows a little through this album's vibes), it all appeals to my taste a lot. one of my ... read more

these dudes released a couple of okay projects consisting of 1-2 minute songs that didn't even begin to scratch the surface of their potential and then broke up :( im genuinely so sad im not gonna get to watch them grow, there are great ideas and some rlly good songs here but i feel like the band ended before it really got a chance to start

The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace Is There
96

this album is completely soaked in an air of suburban dread mixed with this really potent sense of nostalgia but like. the bitter kind of nostalgia. the kind of nostalgia that makes you wish you could get back. it stirs emotions in me that no other album has, it's not like the sounds and themes are anything particularly new or groundbreaking but the way they all mesh together makes for a feeling i don't know if i'll ever be able to properly describe. it's lightning in a ... read more

open carry state - ill live in this discomfort

an incredibly overlooked skramz/emoviolence project from this year. song structures and riffs are dynamic and emotional, the vocals are appropriately intense, the lyrics are super melodramatic and miserable. everything i could want out of a skramz ep. shame this is the only review for it so far

CD - Night Light EP

an atmospheric and haunting little project. big fan of the production especially on the dronier bits, and i love the choice to end on a silent voice cover. i can tell a lot of love went into this

EDIT: my music has now been removed from all stores except for bandcamp. fuck spotify but also fuck streaming in general

writing over my old review on this, rip. this is more important cause it is a PSA.

i want to let as many people as possible know that im gonna be taking my music off of spotify pretty soon. its not a virtue signaling gesture and its not cause xiu xiu and king gizz did it, i came to this decision before that. it's for a lot of reasons but mainly just for my own ... read more

i honetly dont even know what was holding me back from giving this 100 but ive come to realize that this album means more to me than i could ever put into words. ive been running on autopilot for months, morbidly depressed, surrounded by overwhelming fog and unable to feel things, unable to fully immerse myself in anything. i relistened to the full album and by the time huntress ended, i was sobbing harder than i have years, let alone these past few months of unending white noise. ... read more

i chased a crow - Trees

people REALLY like this song, it's probably my least favorite main release. i think it's good but it's my safest public work and the earliest version of my sound so it's interesting that whenever it gets a new rating it's above 90 lol. i guess listen to it if u want. it was originally meant to be on my album but that thing is a whole different beast now so i cut it early on

"this was fantastic to read. thank you for putting so much thought and care into this. it means the world that something i made could stir such vivid imagery and empathy within a person, and you painted that picture very clearly and eloquently. i love all your interpretations, abstract or otherwise. you pretty much clocked the headspace i was in while i made this perfectly, from the lyrics to what the instrumental represents. some of it i hadn't even thought about concretely but i felt it while i was making it and reading this gave me a bit of clarity in some ways so thank you for that as well. you're a great writer and storyteller and i hope you keep at this :)) tysm!!!! <3"

"@fritter_blue hahaha i dont dislike the song or anything like that, i think it's very good and im super proud of what i accomplished with it considering it was my first "finished" project. i do get why ppl gravitate toward it, it's very easy to listen to. just observing and giving my own thoughts on it, as for why i waited a while to start doing more experimental stuff it's simply cause i didn't have the skills or taste back then lol. the only reason trees sounds the way it does is cause i wasn't as well versed, i only discovered phil elverum like a couple years ago and that's when i'd say i really started becoming a more of a music nerd"

"i didnt think this was nearly abysmal as you did but i generally agree with the points made in this review and find it very well written. some stuff you said about the nature of the album as a piece of art and josh's intentions are maybe a little unfounded but those points are definitely applicable to a lot of recent releases and i can see where you got that impression. i wont pretend to know what dude was thinking when he made this but i do feel like it's a genuine and heartfelt attempt at expressing real emotions, whether or not i think it stuck the landing in a particularly mature way"

"i adore your interpretation that their themes are from each other's perspectives, without spoiling the album's story i'll say that you're right in a way lol. i built the sky isn't my thing anymore but i actually listened to a lot of his stuff and instrumental prog metal in general like 6 years ago. it probably wouldn't be too far fetched to say the melodic songwriting style of that genre rubbed off on me :)"
