This album is really beautiful. It’s one of those rare first listens where I can say “I love this”. I hope it continues to have that effect as time passes, but for now, this one is special.
This album could be considered mellow, or meandering, or lo-fi, but all in the best possible ways. There’s such a warm feeling to every song and it’s a beautiful nostalgic lullaby. Rarely is there an upbeat section, but it doesn’t need it. I bet this album fucks in the ... read more
Has an amateur and DIY feel about it, and for the most part it comes off charming. Most of the songs are just the barebones of vocals and acoustic guitar, but there is one song with presumably a drum machine and then another with just actual drums. Neither is too intense or changes the vibe of the record, but it adds some variety if that’s what you need. Personally, for a record so short, with only 9 songs spanning 19 minutes, I don’t necessarily care for the variety and believe the ... read more
Normally, for someone like Phil Elverum, I would like to start from the beginning of his discography. Not only is The Microphones well received, but so is Mount Eerie. Just from my favorite artists alone, he seems like someone who would be right up my alley, so I want to make sure I give him proper attention and respect. But sometimes, something consumes you. It’s a very cohesive dance/electro-pop record that I think has its merit and does it role well.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this style, and I more gravitate towards zany hyperpop for stuff in this vicinity, but what is done here is pretty impressive. Underscores is able to make everything sound so controlled and balanced within the production choices and lush vibrant synths, and the mixing is what you would expect from a controlled record.
And that’s the thing. Since ... read more
I don’t know how the hell he does it… just an insane album sonically and produced by a crazy crazy guy.
I think I already gave praise to AMHAC for its versatility and smooth, seamless production, but this one really takes the cake for that. Not only are the beats executed smoothly as fuck, but there’s also a mix of harder and aggressive production from something like Veteran. It definitely falls more in the realm of AMHAC, but songs like Rebound are crazy in that regard. ... read more
With nice variety comes some half-baked and underdeveloped songs on the tracklist. Definitely could’ve touched up on some ideas or even cut some songs off of the album for something stronger but it is what it is.
For the most part, schoolboy Q has solid delivery and performances on every song. The features feel hit or miss to me, with Rico Nasty and Ab-Soul probably being the standout ones from this album. There’s a lot of west coast influence on here and the production is very ... read more
