Clairo - Sling
96

I genuinely think this album is one of my favorite of all time. The amount of vulnerability and just plain rawness is so fucking gnarly and naked. Every song on this album is special and could be played on shuffle or in order; it doesn't matter. This album reminds me of "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" by Joni Mitchell. This is such a masterfully designed record with a soul-defining era for Clairo; this completely solidified her and Jack Antonoff as creative visionaries. These songs ... read more

Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns
86

Hey this is basically like a really cunty version of "Ladies of the Canyon" and "Hejira". Expect a lot more springy, more jazzy, more attitude coming from Ms. Mitchell on this one, the songs definitely have much more structure on this project than some of her previous work. A lot of this album is also kind of country-ethereal. It reminds me of a Karen Carpenter-Ethel Cain style even. The writing is tip-top, per usual with Joni. This album is very similar to Clairo's ... read more

FKA twigs - EUSEXUA Afterglow

I never reviewed this?! Okay, notes: "Predictable Girl" and "Stereo Boy" are my SHIT. I do not play about those two songs. I also live laugh love "Piece Of Mine" , "Wild And Alone", and "HARD". Love the bridge in "Love Crimes" as well.

Djo - DECIDE
88

The aesthetic, the visuals, the rollout, the clear theme. I love this album. It has to be near the top of my 2022 album list. This is my favorite of Djo's work; I didn't love the direction he went with "The Crux" this past year. I think "DECIDE" is his sound perfected and put in a little genie bottle and it is very retro and kind of dystopian a bit. "On and On" is the song that came to mind while I was writing that adjective. This album is very relevant, ... read more

Jean Dawson - Glimmer of God
69

Gimmer of God is Jean Dawson's first TARGET MUSIC RECORDDDDDD! Congrats, Jean! You now have fifteen new songs with a bit less originality and more commercially acceptable but still sound good on their own and surrounded by each other. The Joji-fication of Jean Dawson needs to be studied. I miss CHAOS NOW* and its writing and experimental glitches. I feel like Glimmer of God kept similar ideas from projects from his entire career but didn't really "expand" on anything except ... read more

Joni Mitchell - Hejira
93

This is a masterpiece. It is so fire like the aesthetic and story behind this body of work is so uniquely beautiful. Joni YAPS all over this project it’s so crazy how many words this woman says. That being said, she is a very observant and wise woman who takes her time to process memories and this album kind of feels like a diary or list of journal entries from a specific era of Joni Mitchell’s journey. I love the guitar all over this album- it’s truly incredible. The chord ... read more

Madison Beer - locket
63

This album pleasantly surprised me. Sonically, it is more than pleasant to listen to- Madison’s vocals are once again proven to be some of the most underrated in the female pop genre. Expect Sabrina Carpenter/Chappell Roan surface-level lyrics and basic song structure with dreamy production and amazing mixing. This album reminded me of a combination of Ariana Grande's "Eternal Sunshine" and Lyn Lapid's "to love in the 21st century". That’s the thing: ... read more

ROSALÍA - LUX
92

LUX is absolutely incredible. I definitely think this album is front loaded but the pure artistry + talent this woman contains is truly undeniable. It's also insane for ROSALÍA to make that dramatic of a shift into a completely new genre and execute it this well. Some songs on this one are better than others, but all of them have something to give. Also, 13 languages? Hello? This album is a Disney princess soundtrack. This album is a gift from a higher power. This album is for ... read more

Remi Wolf - Big Ideas
87

This album bangs. I feel like this was exactly what I needed when this came out. The catchy choruses, clean production, ear candy; that's what I'm saying. Remi continues to be a clear force in alt pop music. Bitches love Cinderella. It's a Fortnite dance now, which is cool. Anyways, as a fan of 'Juno', her first LP, I was more than satisfied with 'Big Ideas'. Every song screams superman-flavored ice cream and cigarettes on a pool floatie.

SZA - Ctrl

I just re-listened to this album and I have to say there's a reason why this lowkey changed the game. I feel like everything; the aesthetic, the palette (musically and artistically), the fact that you can play any of these songs individually or in the context of the rest of the project (and they still contain the sparks they gave you the first time), all of these things + a bit of ear munchies make this album so of its time but also truly timeless simultaneously. Love when mama/gma talks ... read more

Frankie Grande - Hotel Rock Bottom
12

I wanted this album to be over after Messy (the second song). There are 15 songs on this album. I ended up pushing through this whole project while Frankie kept pushing through my rectum. This album gave me goosebumps multiple times, and by goosebumps, I mean literal shivers down my spine. Specifically on tracks such as 'Sex Shop' and 'Boys'. It's a shame that such catchy club beats were ruined whenever Frankie opened his mouth and by that annoying ass saxophone. Holy ... read more

Tyde Levi - A thousand ways to say nothing at all
56

I think I liked the name of this album more than any song on it. I don't really have a lot to say, it's pretty much just stripped-back indie-boy music with pretty uninspired lyrics. Sonically, the production was okay; the songs were all decently catchy. I liked the harmonies on Tyde's voice and the backbone of acoustic guitar. Nothing from this project changed or added anything to my life that I was missing. It was a somewhat of a pleasant listen but nothing more.

Indy - Fame Is A Bedroom
51

I think all of the songs on this EP are fairly decent; I didn't listen to anything I didn't like. I always root for the underdog, and listening to Indy kind of felt that way because, after all, her sister is Lorde. She addresses this in the song 'Idol', which I somewhat admired because of its authenticity, but it was nothing special. The production is fairly simple, the songwriting is unremarkable, and her voice is also satisfactory. The songs are all structured similarly ... read more

Dev Lemons - SURFACE TENSION
34

'SURFACE TENSION' is a series of grievances about a significant other (or others) whose negative character traits put a strain on their relationship with Dev. This record has a very weak lyrical backbone; much of what Dev writes is presented in a literal manner, and some of it doesn't make any sense at all. Engulfed in noisy production, this album* ultimately comes across as more whiny than cathartic. I found myself enjoying her acoustic songs like 'STUCK AGAIN', and ... read more

Minnie Riperton - Come to My Garden
98

This album is everything. Every song genuinely feels like one cautious step in Minnie's sanctuary, avoiding flowers along the way. It feels like a mother's welcoming embrace. I was amazed by the grandeur of the production, which remained consistent from beginning to end, and the use of numerous different instruments to tell the same story. The chord progressions, Minnie's voice, the figmental lyricism; the only thing keeping this album from being perfect is (some of) the mixing ... read more

Solange - When I Get Home
84

A lot is going on in 'When I Get Home'. Thirteen songs and six interludes are packed tightly into less than forty minutes of music, to be exact. There is plenty I love about this album: the infectious hooks, wondrous synths, and the bass, which brings this album more personality. I have never enjoyed a Playboi Carti feature more than I did on 'Almeda'; it astonishes me how well it works. I think this project is amazing in context, but I feel like it would be a bit hard to ... read more

Sampha - Lahai
88

First off, I must say, this album is very cool. There aren't many words to describe it other than that. Sampha's lyricism and vocals mesh well with his lush and complex production. Some of these instrumentals remind me of the soundtrack of 'Wii Sports Resort', a game I played throughout my childhood, so there is a nostalgic aspect to this project for me. 'Lahai' is a seamless breeze that takes you to places you haven't seen before, but you somehow recognize. I ... read more

Bon Iver - SABLE, fABLE
74

I love the duality of 'SABLE, fABLE'. I think the soulful nature of this project shines through on both sides. Although I like the idea of Justin returning to his roots of homely folk on 'SABLE', I am more interested in what new chimes he has to offer, and that's exactly what the very purpose of 'fABLE' is. We’re familiar with Bon Iver’s mastery of melancholy, but this album introduces a rare, uplifting, and carefree sound that’s both ... read more
