Going to have to disagree with the consensus on this one, however, another relisten is planned. I think the rapping on his debut had far more charisma and grit, which although spat over a weaker buffet of beats, only needed a bounce or two to shine. Personally this album just lacks the same highlights, and I think people are harsh on the amount of percieved filler present in KTGG. Currently thinking of rating Jada an 86. Although his catalogue leaves much to be desired his rapping can never be ... read more
Blu claims that him and exile are the next Pete Rock and Cl. If he ever disrespects PR like that again I may have to replicate the classic Rondonumbanine crash out. Exile laid one of the worst set of overdramatic disney how to train my cat production. Then you have Blu with some interesting lyrical content at times, however, held back by a rather corny delivery which seems to try and sound slick but sounds nerdy trying to sound cool. Blu calls out homo rappers but I can't lie with the ... read more
White America – Instrumental reminds me of something off Stankonia, but while I don’t particularly love the rock influence, it’s one of the few times I think it works to a degree because the crescendo is just that good. Lyrics are original and have personality which I respect, but I think he walks the line between overly angry/angsty with presence, and the line between having a personality in his delivery, and just sounding weird/corny – and with both he crosses the line ... read more
Pusha T – Artist Review
Part of Greatest Rappers List
Pusha T may not let you forget that he is a legendary coke dealer fist and foremostly, but what he doesn’t tell you is that he has an argument for best delivery in the game, not talking about his Peruvian imports – it’s certainly as addictive though. He creates this persona of a lavish, kingpin of the coke game which creates instant engagement and mixes well with the Neptunes beat selection and vocal strength. ... read more
A precursor to basically every great jazz rap album it feels like all the ingredients are there but the rappers are on DMT so they know how they want to rap but in the end it seems mumbled, lethargic and missing the spark of Prometheus. Also production is like blindtasting at a buffet.
This is like the 2005 AC Milan vs Liverpool final - if it was an album and we are listening to the game as a Milanista. Great first half, but I don't know what the fuck happened in the second, T'Cha is a nice highlight though. Much better flows from KRS and better production, unfortunately after nervous the flows become far more elementary and the teacher sounds more like a special ed student.
Extremely influential, always super cool to hear the origin of 90s references. KRS One had many interesting flows and cadences but he often overexagerated basic rhyme schemes or lyrics which comes accrodd as super corny. He also has a high pitched voice at times and it just makes him sound pretty goofy.
There's no doubt the rapping doesn't interact with me like leafs and wind, but the album sounds like one lazy lean fueled boat ride on a autumn afternoon. Relaxing, enjoyable and smoother then a quantum-stabilized atom mirror.
Feels like psytrance x hip hop and I’m not totally against it. Unsure how I feel but it’s worth checking out if you enjoy experimental rap. I love how cohesive the project feels also.
Men who fight the Id like a personified stalk of grass, and judge those who do battle with dragons and dinosaurs, should watch for rocks. Perhaps acting virtuously makes you a good person, but I believe it’s more nuanced then that. Acting badly doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad person, for our will and the actions of the entity you coexist within, are not the same. For me no album or individual perhaps demonstrates that then DMX and his album ‘It’s Dark and ... read more
Beats are grimmier then a mechanics dick after jerking off, pair that with a if-ODB-was-a-pimp-and-rapped-in- a-dirty-south-style delivery, and it feels like you've ducked down the wrong alleyway; but to your surprise, the maniac yelling at the metal bins is surprisingly captivating. Dre Dog has a great voice, its a shame his rhymes are relatively elementary, enjoyable regardless - especially the first half.
Packed with personality 'At the Speed of Life' is packed with personality, with Xzibit giving off the an aura that's as ruthless as bullets flying at the Nek and mental crafted from the same steel.
Could do without the features - looking at you Tyler the Destroyer, but earl has some really creative bars on this project and his voice sounds like it actually has life in it. Surprisingly good beat selection too.
Beanie sounds like a very high quality knock off rolex version of Jay-z, its almost the same thing, but somethings missing. Production and mixing was definitely the biggest issue, beanie killed most of the verses, but I think he lacks a little personality.
Decent delivery, enjoyable soundscape, but freeway is unengaging and uncharismatic. His lyrics aren't really supported by his delivery either, what is he? A hustler? He doesn't sound like a gangsta at all just another every day normal motherfucker aye. .
Political hip hop albums usually bug me because i think they often lack nuance, this one is no different. If you are heavily left wing or enjoy jpegmafia type lyricism you will enjoy the rapping on this project. Anyways the fact that the rapping was as eye rolling as it was for me and I still have it a 69 shows how good the production is. Very diverse, and unique.
Refreshing tbh. Although I think you need more variety in the tracklist - perhaps mixing in some more edm elements would add some diversity and increased energy, I really like the sound of this project. I know people will be mixed on his delivery because he's scouse but I love those cheeky cunts, a certain charm to it, even if it does become almost too hood 'ratty' at times.
Thought offset was average don't see the hype with his verse, JID's verse was incredible though the way he built the momentum and didn't rush his flow I think shows his growth as an artist and I can't wait for his new album. Really hoping he realises his potential with his next project and cements himself as not only one of the best rappers from the modern era but of all time.
Another abstract rap hype job. His voice is completely unengaging, he lacks any sense of personality and charisma and some of the worst beats I have ever heard, Holla Loo Yuh was so bad I was about to jump out my fucking window the second hand embarrassment is unreal. Yes he has some nice bars, hits a couple of nice pockets of flow - outnumbered by his corny pockets, but overall the lyrics come and go because the emcee's delivery is terrible.
