Insanely overrated, not as cutting-edge as any of his other projects. Still good on a general level though.
I was very disappointed with this record. After I decided to listen to it after I saw someone call it a masterpiece for the billionth time, all I got was a weak first half of rappers that usually are good doing a terrible MF DOOM impression. The political messaging is said to be ”genius”, although I find it very ham-fisted and not delivered in a satisfying lyrical manner at all. The production is also severly lacking in several places, with synths and melodies that sound ... read more
This is not hip hop? Like at all? Feels rather like a modern adaption of Talking Heads' singing style. Either way, the lyrics strike me as very "we live in a society", although I really liked the concept of seven peoples stories coming together in the end.
Why did I ever like this group? This is the most annoying production and lyrics I've heard in a while.
An absolutely phenomenal album with unreal beats and some great bars by Apex.
A lot of people seem to be missing the point of this record. After being inducted into the world of popular music, Daft Punk wanted to deliberately express their frustrations with the music industry with an abrasive and unlikable album. Human After All is about being dehumanized by a capitalist system that stifles creativity and emphasizes crowd-pleasing bangers, the latter they ironically came to embrace in the future. However, I do think this moment of reflection was necessary for them to ... read more
The closest thing to sonic perfection ever created. I can’t say I’m sad that Daft Punk split up, because topping this album in terms of quality would be an impossible task.
There’s just something magical about the congruence between the mess that this album is and the mess of the album-making process itself. Paradoxically, the songs are very good individually but don’t really fit together, yet that’s what they have in common which makes them fit together perfectly. I have yet to see something similar by any other artist.
This really doesn’t work at all in my opinion. If Madlib and DOOM are like PB & J, this is like PB & cement flakes. I would never want that on my sandwich.
Looking back most of this album is very cringey and surface level in terms of lyrics, however the production is amazing. As a result 3005, Pink Toes, Flight of the Navigator and Life: The Biggest Troll remain in the top Gambino songs oat in my opinion.
Some songs on this are really not good, otherwise I can think some of modern hiphop’s best moments are on this album. Andre’s remarkably dark feature on the ends, the really cool dancehally hiphop remix on guidance and the trap masterpiece that is goosebumps.
This is very impressive and not at all a dip in quality from Kendrick. Unlike others I do think that that the album has a central idea, the connection between the story of the homeless woman in the first track that ties in with the story of Duckworth at the end is Kendrick-caliber storytelling. The song GOD. is a major dud though, not sure what happened there.
To be a able to succeed in an album lyrically, sonically, culturally, politically, in terms of storytelling and even throw a poem in there that ties everything together: that proves an instant classic.
This album is just so full of personality. Freddie being Freddie and Otis being Otis to the max. Freddie’s charisma combined with Madlib’s soulful beats renders a beautiful concoction of sound, one that I will return to many times.
DOOM over industrial beats was always difficult for me, but on this it really worked. I don’t really care for the open mic interludes and the two minute long silence on the last track. Also, ’Can I Watch?’ is a sublime work of poetry, without a doubt the highlight of the album.
The elements of this album just come together to form a perfect puzzle. The album cover, the general European aesthetic, the hard-hitting beats, the braggadocious features. Even though I’m not really a fan of Flygod myself I can still appreciate the genius of this piece of music.
I sometimes lay awake at night wondering how Fantano thought that 4/10 was appropriate for this masterpiece.
