bro forgot to finish his album
edit: 25 -> 35, new mixing makes most songs listenable at the very least
edit 2: 35 -> 25. he added more AI and somehow made a few songs worse again, I hate this man

favorites (ig): slide, field trip, river

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
85

can’t believe peggy invented guitars to make this album
while he’s generally lacking some worthwhile things to talk about on a lot of the songs on this project, jpegmafia’s rapping and especially his production have never sounded better, effortlessly combining the sounds of metal with his signature style to create an extremely innovative and boundary-pushing album

favorites: don’t rely on other men, I’ll be right there, either on or off the drugs

Porter Robinson - SMILE! :D
91

such a genuinely heartfelt and bittersweet project, you can really tell that this is the exact album porter wanted to make even if it wasn’t the album a lot of his fans wanted him to make.
most of what he talks about across the album’s ten tracks is extremely not relatable to almost anyone but porter himself, yet somehow, thanks to his amazing songwriting, the songs hit hard on an emotional level regardless
obviously, being a porter robinson album, the production is also a massive ... read more

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
90

truly a one of a kind experience

favorites: since I left you, frontier psychiatrist, two hearts in 3/4 time

Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
45

genuinely really cool concept, unfortunately executed terribly

favorites: fuel, houdini, temporary

Charli xcx - BRAT

bart

favorites: sympathy is a knife, so i, 360

Matt Elliott - Drinking Songs
90

such a haunting, depressing, yet sonically beautiful tale of war, heartbreak, and death

highlights: the maid we messed, c. f. bundy, a waste of blood
FAVORITE: the guilty party

Porter Robinson - Worlds
75

definitely porter’s worst album imo, the fact that it’s still a really good project is a sign of just how incredible the two albums that came after this are

porter robinson has always been a great edm producer. while the mixes on some of these songs are a bit too overblown for me to say this album’s aged well as a whole, it has certainly aged way better than most edm albums of this era.
what really holds this album back for me is the lyrical content, which, considering ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
100

I think it’s pretty safe to say that this is sufjan’s magnum opus, and opus is the best single word I could use to describe an album like this.

everything about this project is so grand with the theatrical arrangements and soaring instrumentation found in almost every song, yet at the same time, the stories told in each song feel so personal, seamlessly getting more and more intimate as the album progresses thematically. this might one of the most insanely ambitious concepts for an ... read more

PinkPantheress - Heaven knows
85

very fun album with consistently great production and vocals.
while some songs could’ve definitely used some expanding upon of their sound, the vast majority of the tracks here are bangers

favorites: ophelia, capable of love, true romance

Porter Robinson - Nurture
100

pure magic, this is probably my favorite album of all time.
explored through what is easily porter’s best lyrical work to date, nurture’s themes of creative drought and coming to terms with mortality and the fleeting nature of life are unveiled over some of the most beautiful, uplifting melodic edm production I’ve ever heard.

I’m probably gonna write more about this later tbh

highlights: blossom, look at the sky, get your wish, something comforting, unfold

Quadeca - From Me to You
70

incredible highs, pretty low lows

favorites: sisyphus, candles on fire!, maybe another day…

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD
92

a varied, amazing collection of tracks with quad’s best production yet.
the fact that quadeca can casually drop a mixtape of leftover tracks that’s more sonically cohesive and impressive than almost any other official album I’ve heard this year is insane, easily one of the most talented up-and-coming artists imo

highlights: guess who, texas blue, dustcutter, guide dog
FAVORITE: easier

55

bland & uninspired, certainly not as bad as some people make it out to be tho

favorites: burn, do it, stars

Kanye West - Donda
80

I genuinely believe that this would be a top 5 kanye album if the tracklist was rearranged a bit and only the best and most conceptual 12-15 tracks were kept on it.
even with an admittedly large number of mid/filler songs that I don’t really care for, I can’t give an album with come to life on it a lower score than an 80. top 3 kanye song of all time btw

favorites: come to life, off the grid, moon

84

A beautiful mess, this album perfectly encapsulates the highs and lows of Kanye’s relationship with the media and popular culture. It's very of its time and hasn't aged particularly well in a few places, but every part of this album's hectic tracklist is captivating

Highlights: No More Parties In LA, Famous, Waves, Real Friends, FML
FAVORITE: Saint Pablo

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
93

Larger than life

Arguably Kanye’s magnum opus, the grandiose atmosphere of this album is something I haven’t seen executed to this degree before in any other album I’ve listened to

Highlights: POWER, Dark Fantasy, Devil In A New Dress, All Of The Lights
FAVORITE: Runaway

Kanye West - The College Dropout
90

Absolute classic, easily one of the best rap albums of the early 2000s imo. Some songs haven’t aged nearly as well as others but this is just so so good and consistent overall

Highlights: Through The Wire, Never Let Me Down, All Falls Down, We Don't Care
FAVORITE: Family Business

Kanye West - Late Registration
91

One of Kanye’s more ambitious albums from a production and lyrical standpoint, the high points of this project are so grand and surprisingly cinematic. It’s only a slight step down from The College Dropout, as some songs in the first half feel a bit underdeveloped and forgettable.

Highlights: Diamonds From Sierra Leone, Hey Mama, Touch The Sky, Bring Me Down, Celebration
FAVORITE: We Major

Kanye West - Graduation
100

you start to realize this album’s actually perfect when you don’t have a bunch of aoty users in your ear saying that drunk and hot girls is a bad song
a classic album full to the brim with many of kanye’s most iconic, feel-good songs, this was my first real introduction to rap music and my personal favorite rap album of all time

highlights: can’t tell me nothing, flashing lights, homecoming, stronger, good life
FAVORITE: I wonder
