Kurt Vile - Bottle It In
76

Kurt Vile returns with another album shooting for the same kinda sound he's been playing with for the past two albums. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just think his past two albums are far stronger from a songwriting perspective.

If you dig Kurt's style there's lots to like with this release. It's a very chill listen and I'll probably return to it quite a lot for the rest of the year.

It outstays its welcome toward the end though, I found Skinny Mini quite tedious and doesn't evolve ... read more

Mutual Benefit - Love's Crushing Diamond

A perfect little capsule of beauty, emotion and simplicity. Always coming back to this album; it's just very easy to listen to and pleasant.

Wild Nothing - Indigo
67

Letting Go, Oscillation and Shallow Water are fun catchy tracks. But still, just like the last album, Wild Nothing fail to go above and beyond like their first two releases. It's pleasant while it's on, but just not something I'll be coming back to regularly.

Majical Cloudz - Are You Alone?
82

The music that Majical Cloudz makes is textbook definition of a grower for me. Fantastic, moody, ambient, hypnotic vibes.

<3 Change, Control, Call On Me, Downtown

Majical Cloudz - Impersonator
85

I ended up sleeping on this one back in 2013. While I enjoyed it back then, there was something holding me back from completely loving it.

The instrumentation is patient and repetitive, but quite hypnotic. I found myself getting lost in these serene, ambient soundscapes. Devon Welsh's singing is passionate and didn't quite hit me when I heard it first. Both of these elements are the strongest and most unique thing Majical Cloudz has (or had) going for them. Only now am I realizing the beauty ... read more

Wild Nothing - Nocturne
86

Building on their fantastic debut, Wild Nothing clean up the sonic quality of their sound and dish their best set of tracks yet.

The album opens with Shadow and you can instantly hear the difference in sound compared to the Lo-Fi textures of the first album. The track opens with this driving guitar refrain. Somber violins join the mix to great effect. The song reaches a climax at the end with all of the instrumentation soaring loudly.

Jack Tatum's vocals share a lot of similarities to the ... read more

Wild Nothing - Gemini

Always coming back to this album. It has this beautiful, catchy and melancholic vibe going all throughout it. Live in Dreams kicks this album off perfectly, Jack Tatum's vocals are very passionate and somewhat sad.

Summer Holiday follows with a more upbeat instrumental, catchy guitar refrains and these echoed "oooh" background vocals that make it an instant standout.

My absolute favourite track is Chinatown near the end, it's a song that as soon as you hear it will be embedded in ... read more

Blood Orange - Freetown Sound
84

Always coming back to this one. Stellar production and melodies. Tracks like Augustine and Better Than Me soar with insane beauty.

The introduction "By Ourselves" is a raw and fiery introduction. Dev Hynes has such a captivating voice and the jazzy instrumentation is a great backdrop for him.

If you missed this back in 2016 I highly recommend giving it a listen and getting lost in this wonderful, atmospheric album.

SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
85

It's really exciting as a music fan to listen to something as wildly experimental and as beautiful as this. It sounds huge, it sounds massive and it sounds like a groundbreaking new direction for pop music.

Skee Mask - Compro
81

I'm getting Burial x Aphex Twin vibes what's not to like?

The flow to this album is constantly shifting and moving, beautiful and somber one minute and schizophrenic the next. Lots to explore, very detailed and textured electronic beats. Definitely a highlight of the year.

♥️ Flyby Vfr, 50 Euro to Break Boost, Rev8617, Session Add, Vli

Kanye West - ye
84

It doesn't rank up there with his best albums that's for sure, but I'm still getting a lot out of it. The production as you'd expect is top notch but the lyrics aren't as potent as his previous albums. I do appreciate how Kanye is really highlighting his mental health, it feels really personal. I didn't outright dislike any tracks on this album, I love aspects of every track on here so overall I'm positive on it.

♥️ Wouldn't Leave, Ghost Town, No Mistakes, Violent Crimes

John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves
83

They call me the believer..

And I'm not coming back..

Beach House - 7
85

When this album is on I don't want it to end

Moody and varied. It's a sonic exploration of dream pop. Absolutely stunning. God damn, how do they keep dropping so many great records?

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata
87

Only getting around to this album now but it's straight fire. The production is absolutely immaculate, Madlib coming through with some of his best instrumentals in a long time.

Start to finish the LP delivers with filthy flows, tremendous beats and interesting song topics. Definitely a must listen for any hip-hop fans.

Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady
79

Janelle comes through with a solid follow-up to her masterful debut album, The Archandroid.

There are a lot of highlights on this thing for me, but the album as a whole pales in comparisson to the pure scale and brilliance of the first.

Faves: Primetime, Electric Lady, Dance Apocalyptic, Victory, Can't Live Without Your Love

Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
95

Mind blowingly ambitious, groovy, freaky, experimental, catchy. A modern masterpiece. One of the most confident and assured debut albums I can recall in the past decade.

Azealia Banks - Broke with Expensive Taste
76

Azealia is an undeniably skilled MC. Her flow, backed up with abrasive, grimey production results in a stand out hip-hop release.

Runs a little long clocking in at an hour. Some fat could have been trimmed. Also, familiarity with a lot of the tracks before-hand kind of hurt the overall experience. An otherwise great album.

Fave tracks: Desperado, 212, Wallace, HMAR, Ice Princess, Soda, Chasing Time, Nude Beach A-Go-Go

Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)
90

Most replayed album of 2018!

Toledo graces us with yet another rock opus. And I think he succeeds even better this time. Inhumans, Bodys and Cute Thing are some of my favourite songs of the year period, and this motherfucker puts them back to back to back. Mad yoke.

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
65

RATING: 84

After the album finished I immediately went back to the first track and played the whole way through again. Don't do that very often.

It's so immediate and catchy, Kacey's voice soars on these tracks. Her voice + the instrumentation is a match made in heaven. Some highlights so far for me are Slow Burn (gettin dem sufjan vibes from the get go), Love Is A Wild Thing, High Horse (omg orgasmic) and the beautiful closing track Rainbow (get the kleenex).

Cant' say enough good things ... read more

Soccer Mommy - Clean

It's a nice album, but her music reminds me too much of her contemporaries who do it better such as Jay Som and Julien Baker
