Slint - Spiderland
87

Atmospheric, creepy and memorable. I've been digesting this one for a while now and I'm still not sure if it has fully clicked with me yet. But what I am loving about this LP is that it doesn't sound like anything else I've listened to. It's an odd album filled with strange lyrics, unique vocal delivery, and it's loud, very loud!

Loving the off-kilter guitar riffs and drums and the consistent foreboding atmosphere creeping throughout the whole thing. It's just really memorable experience and ... read more

Radiohead - In Rainbows
100

This is a really special one to me. Truly a modern classic and personally my favourite Radiohead release. It was the first Radiohead album I ever listened to, of course, I knew about by their massive singles but never knew about their acclaim. The album itself is so varied with intricate rock tracks like Bodysnatchers/Jigsaws Falling Into Place to beautiful and nuanced electronic cuts like All I Need/Nude.

There's just so much attention to detail on this thing, it's staggering to me how, ... read more

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
90

This album is gorgeous! Breezy, dreamy guitar riffs backed with fantastic and memorable vocals by Elizabeth Fraser. I really can't praise the sound of her voice enough, it really brings a uniqueness to their style. It's just pure spectacle with walls of sounds flowing at you. A must for any shoegaze, dream-pop fan.

Faves: Cherry-coloured Funk, Iceblink Luck, I Wear Your Ring, Heaven or Las Vegas

Joyce Manor - Never Hungover Again
76

Joyce Manor's got hooks. The album itself has just 10 tracks, none of which cross the 2 and a half minute mark. They're short, catchy, bursts of energy and the album is over before you know it. Usually I like to let an album sit with me and return to it later, but with this I had to listen again after it was over because it didn't outstay it's welcome in the slightest.

Loving their sound, only gripe is that the album is too short and would have loved a few more tracks.

The Postal Service - Give Up

Damn, this thing is fantastic. It's got emotive vocals and danceable beats and they're both blended beautifully. The instrumentals on this thing on it's own would make it a great album with it being so intricate (listen on headphones). But you've got these fantastic lyrics and unique delivery.

Ben Gibbard shows himself to be a great storyteller on Sleeping In even if it is a little on the nose. My favourite instrumental has to be from Nothing Better and I love the female vocals from Jen Wood ... read more

ANOHNI - Hopelessness
77

ANOHNI comes through with an emotionally impactful album with some real highlights such as 4 Degrees, Crisis and Drone Bomb Me. These tracks feature great vocal performances and fantastic production.

There are just some so-so tracks on here that bring the overall experience down a bit. My main issue is with the lyrics, they're really blunt and direct and I think I a little more subtlety would have been nice. You should definitely check this out of you're a fan of electronic music blended with ... read more

Angel Olsen - MY WOMAN
87

Angel Olsen shows so much personality on this LP. I absolutely love her voice! She can be easily transition from being fierce and formidable on one track to quiet and vulnerable on another.

There is such variety on this thing from the quiet and moody "Woman" to the in-your-face "Shut Up, Kiss Me".

If you're a fan of singer-songwriter indie rock albums I think this is a must!

William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
85

It's hard to describe why this album is so affecting. Maybe it's the historical impact that plays into it. The story in which this album was conceived wanders around in my head every time I listen to it. I get so lost in the sounds and repetition, it's quite a beautiful experience and I often put it on when I'm relaxing, or when I need background noise for when I'm working. But it always seems grabs my attention; the haunting atmosphere is hard to ignore.

For the moment I'm going to rate this ... read more

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 3

It's El-P and Killer Mike doing what they do best. Sick as shit flows and banging beats. I can't say enough about how catchy some of these tracks are, the production (led by El-P and his glorious ear for detail) and flow work so seamlessly together it's just a joy to listen to.

The replay value on this thing is ridiculous. Some of my favourite RTJ tracks so far land on this album such as Panther Like a Panther, Everybody Stay Calm (the flow on this track guys!!), Call Ticketron and Legend Has ... read more

Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
93

This album is aching with beauty. Thom Yorke's vocals soar over beautifully arranged strings and I'm loving the subtle electronic instrumentation. You can hear the sheer labour and attention to detail that went into these 11 tracks, every moment feels essential. This thing is growing on me more and more every time I listen to it.

It amazes me how this band are 9 albums in and they're still knocking out some of their best material. Radiohead, take a bow!

Ducktails - St. Catherine
74

Easy-going, inoffensive indie pop. This album doesn't really take any bold risks but the songs are playful and enjoyable here. Definitely prefer previous Ducktails releases but there's enough here to make me come back to anything they release in the future.

Favourite tracks: Headbanging in the Mirror, St. Catherine, Reprise.

Mikal Cronin - MCIII
84

Mikal Cronin delivers another solid rock/pop album following in the same lines as MCII. Been spinning this album a lot lately, loving Cronin's lyrics and delivery. While not as strong as his previous release, there's still so much to love on this album.

Favourite tracks: Made my Mind Up, Turn Around, Circle, Control.

Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit
85

Wonderfully eccentric and summery debut from Courtney Barnett. Love her style of songwriting and delivery of the lyrics. Incredibly catchy and up-beat indie rock tracks. There's also some fantastic slow-building/patient tracks on here like Kim's Caravan

If you're looking for an up-beat summer rock record, look no further!

Favourite tracks: Depreston (possibly my track of the year), Pedestrian at Best, Aqua Profunda! and Elevator Operator.

Beach House - Depression Cherry
90

Another fantastic Beach House album! They're honestly one of my favourite bands now after releasing Teen Dream, Bloom and now Depression Cherry. Dream pop masterpieces!

Beach House live up to their usual sound, this album is gorgeously produced, sung beautifully by Victoria Legrand with very patient slow-building songs. They also experiment with new sounds with tracks like Sparks and Beyond Love, incorporating a lot more of a shoegazey atmosphere.

Favourite Tracks: Sparks, Levitation, Days of ... read more

Tame Impala - Currents
90

Tame Impala are back with a new album and a new direction. This isn't another Lonerism, although many fans would have been completely happy with another psychedelic rock record. Currents is gorgeously arranged and produced, it has this electronic tinge flowing throughout the whole record which makes it really consistent.

Kevin Parker knows how to write a catchy hook, songs like Disciples, The Less I Know the Better and The Moment will be playing over and over in your head after one listen! ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
90

An emotional journey. Sang beautifully, fantastically arranged.. Sufjan is one of the finest singer/songwriters of our generation and this album spotlights his best qualities.

Tobias Jesso Jr. - Goon
86

A charming debut from Jesso Jr. He's got a knack for songwriting! These tracks are sung very passionately, Tobias's vocals are front and center and the production is clear and crisp!

Some really stand out moments on this album including Hollywood (my personal favorite track on the album), Without You, Just A Dream and Leaving LA. What makes this album special are the story-like lyrics and a lot of personality. Jesso Jr. is a talent to watch!

Cage the Elephant - Melophobia
80

Enjoyable indie rock with great vocals and strong hooks. Still continues to grow on me.

Favorite tracks include Come a Little Closer, Halo and Cigarette Daydreams.

Ariel Pink - pom pom
85

This album really feels like a long lost mixtape. The variety of tracks here is incredible, Ariel jumps from genre to genre effortlessly.

Some people may find Ariel's oddball and zany nature a bit too much, but I found it so entertaining. Haven't heard anything like this all year.

Some fantastically catchy tracks on here including Lipstick, Put Your Number in My Phone, Black Ballerina and One Summer Night.

Jessie Ware - Tough Love
84

Jessie Ware's back with another excellent album, even if it's a little safe.

Loving Jessie's vocals on this album, she's really testing her range on this thing. The production and instrumentation is detailed, occasionally beautiful and much poppier than her previous LP, Devotion.

Some of my favorite tracks of the year are on this LP such as Tough Love, Want Your Feeling, Champagne Kisses and Say You Love Me.

Nothing came out of left field but that's okay, its a ... read more
