Megan Thee Stallion - Fever
50

I believe that Jermain Dupri would classify this as stripper rap or strap. The album is entertaining enough in the beginning, but it quickly becomes apparent that there's only so much you can say about "busting it open" before things start getting tedious.

Favourite tracks: Cash Shit, Pimpin, Simons Says

Vince Staples - FM!
80

A fun and breezy album that does not overstay its welcome. The Tyga interlude is a perfect example of how this album gives you just enough to be entertained without overindulging the artist. I have to end off by saying that I loved Tweakin' because it kind of reminded me of Limos from his first mixtape.

CHAI - PUNK
60

Anime: The Album. There's some decent head-bopping stuff here but nothing really stands out and begs for multiple listenings.

Snoh Aalegra - - Ugh, those feels again
35

Song titles like "I Want You Around", "Situationship" and "Find Someone Like You" should tell you what type of listening experience you are in for - a bland forty minutes of "baby, baby I love you" type R&B. This is offensively bland.

Summer Walker - Over It
50

This album is too long (48 minutes to be exact) for such an uninteresting topic - her relationship with her boo. At one point she complains about him wanting pussy six times a week and never cleaning up. My question is whether the Bible prohibits getting pussy on the sabbath.

Young M.A - Herstory in the Making
40

Way too long for an unimaginative trap album. Seriously, it's 21 songs of the same thing over and over again.

Pusha T - King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude
85

Gotdamn Pusha drops some icy bars on here. At times there is so much contempt in his voice that I found myself sharing his disdain for his rap rivals. Fuck Young Money.

Wow, this chick can sing. I mean she's got a serious set of lungs on her. That being said, she tries to be versatile by doing the rap and singing thing a la Lauren Hill, but here it just makes for an inconsistent listening experience. I mean it's jarring going from a soul ballad to a rap about being a "thick bitch".

Pop Smoke - Meet The Woo
65

He bites 50's style hard on this but it works well so more power to him.

DaBaby - KIRK
55

I'm beginning to suspect that trap music has run its course and needs to be taken out back and given a dignified end.

Lyrics: Mostly variations of "I get more money than you" and "I fuck bad bitches".

Beats: Trunk rattling beats which are indistinguishable after a while.

Finally, two notes that are unrelated to DaBaby:

1. The song Gospel is kind of what I expected Chance's album to sound like but instead, we got THAT album.

2. Maybe Nicki Minaj should retire from ... read more

Ameer Vann - EMMANUEL
55

Ameer Vann did some terrible things to women, but thankfully I don't look to rappers for moral guidance and so have no problem with listening to his music and judging it on its merits alone. He was always head and shoulders above the other members of Brockhampton and his flow on this is damn good. Unfortunately, the lyrics here aren't particularly inspired and the beats are all forgettable. But if his intention was to make people sit up and pay attention to him again in anticipation of future ... read more

SiR - Chasing Summer
45

How a grown man can say, "Her pussy tastes like diamonds," and expect to be taken seriously is beyond me. This is low effort R&B that quickly falls apart the more you listen to it.

ScHoolboy Q - Blank Face LP
55

<sigh> Schoolboy Q's "I'm a rough and tough gangster" schtick makes him sound like a tryhard on this one, and the grimey sound he was going for just makes for a joyless listen. Listening to this feels like being force-fed your least favourite vegetable as a kid.

Shout out to my boy Izzy, I love you like a little brother but this album was meh.

Mariah Carey - Caution
65

Like every other person on this planet, I was familiar with her biggest hits but this was my first time listening to a Mariah album from beginning to end. Overall I appreciated its brevity and enjoyed its playful tone. GTFO, Giving Me Life and Stay Long Love You were my favourites.

Cardi B - Invasion of Privacy
70

Cardi B winning the Grammy for Best Rap album is as significant as when Naughty By Nature beat 2Pac and Ol Dirty Bastard to win it in 1996 i.e. this is not a hip hop classic by any stretch of the imagination. However, that being said, this album is a lot of fun and that's good enough. And you can't help but root for Cardi when she describes stripping at a club across from her school (what type of zoning laws allow this?), or when she reminisces about how comments about her bad teeth used to cut ... read more

Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens
90

A coming of age story set to some banging boom bap beats. Exile's production is really good but it's Blu's earnest lyrics that make this album a gem. From confessing his anxiety of being a young father to making a case for why a girl should choose a cheapskate like him, Blu comes across as sincere throughout the album. This album shows a vulnerability and sensitivity that is often missing in the macho world of hip hop and that makes it both refreshing and important.

Clarence Clarity - NO NOW
80

"Before I get out, I'll put the cancer in the water."

Shout out to Melon for introducing me to this fantastic album.
It's one of those albums that you can blast on the car radio and sing along to as you go on a long drive. It features some really quirky production that actually works and doesn't come across as obnoxious.

Solange - When I Get Home
20

Pretentious crap. It tries to be profound but it just comes across as her not having anything substantial to say. It also does not help that she spends so much of the album repeating one or two lines throughout a song. Playboi Carti's feature was excellent and it snapped me out of the bored daze I was in listening to this album.

Young Thug - So Much Fun
50

"Wipe his nose, wipe his nose (Pussy ass nigga)
Wipe his nose, (Slatt) wipe his nose (Wipe your nose)
Wipe his nose, (Wipe your nose, slatt) wipe his nose (Slatt, wipe his nose)
Wipe his nose, (Wipe your nose), wipe his nose (Yeah, yeah)"

I'm a huge Thugger fan (stan) but there is a limit to my support and this is it. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the Machine Gun Kelly feature.

EARTHGANG - Mirrorland
30

The comparisons to Outkast are unwarranted. I'll leave it at that.

*Edit: I initially gave it a rating of 50 but it's so bland I had to revise the rating significantly downwards.
