I REALLY like the beats of this album. It's so over imposing and ridiculous. But... it just doesn't work for me that much. I don't really know why. I think I've just grown out of the hyperpop aesthetic. I also feel like the lyrics are a bit too quirky. I know, I know, that's the point of hyperpop, but I feel like Dev Lemons is riding off a "not like other girls" aesthetic that just isn't that interesting and rubs me the wrong way, particularly in the ... read more
Just realized I never wrote a review for this
Not that I have much to say about this—it's a Christmas cover album. It's pretty good though; Schlatt did a great job singing and I'm totally gonna listen to it again this upcoming christmas
fun beats :)
Then again that's the whole idea, isn't it? This album was supposed to be a sort of "reset" after Chromakopia. On DON'T TAP THE GLASS, Tyler decides to let off on the "deep" messages of his previous album and bring back something silly you can dance along to. Granted, I'm not saying the lyrics don't have meaning; I'm just saying they're less of a focus. The beats are creative and funky; more radio-friendly music that just gets ... read more
Fuck AI. Like some other people on this page I'm not going to bother rating it because this is fake music. I mean, there's so many tells it's insane:
1. Their name sounds like they're trying to get people who are trying to find The Velvet Underground, or something like that
2. Their Spotify Profile has the hallmarks of AI slop all over it: It's got three instances of using "it's not x, it's y;" insane overuse of the rule of three, as well as really ... read more
Thanks to @tarul for the rec
This song is pretty cool. The instrumentals are quite interesting; the vocals remind me of a lot of other similar artists in this genre and interestingly post-hyperpop music like from Underscores or Jane Remover and they work well with the sounds. Overall it makes me interested for your future work!
I'm excited to hear the rest of the album when it drops!
This is one of those things you can't really compare to anything else---except ambient music tangentially. It's like the musical equivalent to sandpaper. Harsh noise is like that where it's hard to even say much about it either. It's just sounds, smoothing you out through sheer grind. It kind of works though...
Over time, you eventually start to notice more nuance, like how the sounds/textures changes over the course of the song. It's actually interesting to pick out ... read more
It's always nice to see an album that pleasantly surprises me. Small artists can always be hit or miss, especially since the person who recommended this to me was part of the band Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique (which I will be calling FPP from now on). This was not just some guy submitting an EP they worked on, it's clear they have the ability to write songs and know exactly how to execute the feeling they want.
The album does an impeccable job living up to its cover. It ... read more
It's just too much idk. I can't even hear the vocals. I like the instrumentals but it's just a bit too much
Ah, Sleep Token. A band I actually respect quite a lot, but which ultimately frustrates me for reasons I'll get into. Sleep token has always been a band that never really clicked with me, even though I like a lot of their ideas.
Let me get out of the way that I think the idea of an anonymous band with deep lore is really cool; of course, they're not the first: Slipknot along with Ghost - a band I really like currently - are other popular metal bands whose image is built largely from ... read more
It has some good parts but I hate the buildup and singing. The problem I have with Sleep token is that they combine genres by just segmenting random parts from each genre together rather than making it come together into something cohesive. I might listen to their albums one day to detail what I mean but yeah
Bro, I was at hot topic the other day and I saw their recent live album/soundtrack for sale. I was like "you know what Ima get this, I've been meaning to listen to this band at some point anyway." I finally spun it and I was blown away by their performance. They have a
commanding stage presence that honestly makes me want to go to one of their shows for real.
Now I've decided I'm going to listen to their whole discog because why not, it's sick!
I like metal but ... read more
Honestly, I thought this was pretty good. As a Kyle Reid fan, I somehow haven't listened to this until recently. I'm not really a big fan of house music, but I thought it could work well doing work, so here I am. I listened to this while finishing up my stats homework and it was the perfect vibe. The vocal samples were really interesting - it was fun hearing what they were saying but it's not intrusive to the overall ambience. Some songs do get repetitive after a while - ... read more
I've never listened to carti before this album came out and for all the hype I'm not that impressed.
Pop out was an insane opener and really got me hyped for the rest of the album and then it immediately lost all its energy with filler tracks that could have been cut. Let's get into it:
When a song on this album is above a 65 for me, it's beat is usually good. When the beats are good they go off, but a lot of this album's beats aren't that interesting, ... read more
I like the album overall but my rating's low because the songs aren't really mixed and mastered to my liking. Not to say it's bad - there are some great songs on here that I will almost certainly come back to, but some songs are compressed in a way where it feels like everything is just really loud. It works in the shoegaze-y vibe this album is clearly going for, but that's not always my cup of tea - if the vocals were a tad bit clearer and had dynamic changes between the ... read more
