EDIT: the streaming version has proper mastering and sounds miles better than the ripped "oficial-bootleg".
I don't mind autotuned Lou Reed-esque vocals. My problem with this song is the weird ass mixing and some weird line deliveries by Julian. It sounds kinda empty for the most part, and it's oddly uncalculated for a strokes song. Despite all this, the song builds up incredibly well! The ending section is awesome!
I think we can say that the Television influence is ... read more
This album takes the weirdest left turn from track 3 onwards. I want to preface that I don't mean this review as a diss to the band. They are probably awesome musicians and people, and Here Comes the Rain is one of the best songs I discovered this year. I really love and cherish this song. That said, this album disappointed me, and I want to exercise my songwriting brain through this review. If anyone from the band ever read this, keep it up, you're all awesome! Sorry for talking ... read more
Shawn Everett has an immaculate touch for making awesomely dirty sounds
I certainly think this is a big step up songwriting wise from the last record. I think people are traumatized by the awful bits from the last record and became blinded by the auto-tune hate. Russian Coney Island is awesome, blue demon has some very fun polyrythms and production, and Drifto fully brings back that classical edge Julian had on Phrazes.
The last few records made irreparable damage to my ability to enjoy Matt's vocals
The synth tones here always blow me away, specially on Telephone. I really don't get Speechless tho. For me.it's just a bland 70's rock pastiche with unfitting production. This song production actually made me physically uncomfortable lol
Why are people hating on this? It's about the crude lyrics? For me it's just a well performed and well recorded punchy punk song
The first leg of this album is one of the best things I've ever heard in my life
Is it just me or the mixing/recording of the first section is awful? Am I going crazy? Other than that, it's a cool indie jam with a sudden Oasis/A day in the life type chorus. Cool song idea
Wtf?? From forced "dark" sabbath-esc riffage on track 7, passing through cringe lyrics all throughout, to the will of the people type beat of track 9... I just hope this is a throw away of old ideas compilation. I also really hope that most of these lyrics were meant to be funny, but it doesn't seem to be conveyed that way.
Also, the political commentary is very basic and idealistic. "Pirates can have all their money stored, they just can't have the power no ... read more
This album works best when it stops holding it self back from it's own weirdness
I like this album, but it's very derivative. Every other song reminds me of some other older song, whether it's Weezer, The Beatles or Fleet Wood Mac. It's so blatant that i find hard to believe it isn't on purpose, as if that's the point of the album.
Is this it?
Anyhow, despite all that, Four Sided Cell is an amazingly beautiful song
If anything, listening to a metal album from the 2000s that isn't overtly edited to "perfection" is nice. You can feel the people playing these songs. There are some clear tiny sloppy moments that they could easily edit out, overwrite with another take, or adjust with automation, but they just give a big middle finger to the industry standard and leave the full performance to the final master. The drums also sound 100% real (no triggers). If this was entirely recorded without any use ... read more
I'd really like to listen to this, but it's only on apple music for some unfathomable reason
I don't get it, except where I do and it's one of the most emotional and heartfelt things I ever heard. But most of the time it just doesn't click. I think time may have made some of these harmonies and counterpoint ideas overused to the point of commonplace. Production and arrangements are immaculate tho. I can't really say anything bad about this album, it just doesn't move me most of the time.
Edit.: actually, I can! The bass on the stereo mix of Sloop John B sounds bad lol
