Really bland for the most part. I just listened to all Gorillaz in sequence the last few days, and this is the only record where most songs were straight-up boring. For comparison, even The Fall had interesting unfinished ideas at its worst, while here I struggle hard to be compelled most of the time.
Btw I'd trade ANY bonus track with any track besides 1, 5, and 9
Every track after the first one was really disappointing. El Aparato was an unpredictable weird song paired with traditional arrangement and instrumentation, extremely cool! Everything after it felt bland (and dated), even more so by comparison. I won't rate this since it isn't for me. Maybe someday I'll get around it and enjoy it, but not right now
Sweet little 2000s Canadian indie rock, with heavy Pixies overtones. I like it. The lyrics can be one-note and too repetitive, but the performances are great (aside from some annoying vocals). They are all great players and musicians, and you can hear that they know what they are doing, cause every other song has some clever harmonic turnaround that is satisfying and surprising most of the time.
I first noticed that on the transition from body of years to try to change, it was simple but ... read more
Ok... I started listening to this record expecting to get that really nice and raw punch in my earlobes I normaly get with great post-hardcore records... but instead I get this soothing production, where dispite everything being loud and the riffs being angular, things sound very round and controlled. Idn, I think I started this in the wrong mood, so I'll try it again some other time
Well, I guess I decided to give this a spin one day too soon. Not a big fan of side b, besides Stay. The band is extra tight all the way through, but the songs only shine when the song concept is more unique and the arrangements build towards it. Anyway, no one lives forever is currently my quintessential goofy/creepy Halloween song.
Can't say I was surprised to learn this guy wrote basically every single Tim Burton movie score
Although Morrissey can be insufferable sometimes, it's undeniable that he can write amazingly well other times. Still, it's hard to separate the artist from the art when his inflated ego is so apparent in his lyrics. Bigmouth, for instance, only comes off to me as "I'm sorry you felt hurt by my verbal abuse, poor you. Now I have no place in human race, what a tragedy /s". It almost ruins the song for me, despite the amazing arrangement. I'm not a big fan of his ocasional sarcastic ... read more
This is the best industrial metal album i've ever heard. It's just brutal front to end, but still has lots of hooky melodies and powerful "softer" (by contrast) moments. I just love the sound of this album, it's awesome.
All Hail The New Flesh is a perfect metal song, now one of my favorite songs ever
This album is only held down by the third track, which is probably the least strokes song by the strokes. Yeah, the chorus and instrumental sections may be cool, but the verses are awkward, some production choices are weird, and the ending lacks the punch it needed to be impactful. It's a big mood killer after the first two tracks which are both extremely well produced, well written and full of strokes energy.
And then there's You're So Right, which as much as I like the song, it has the ... read more
Very meta and self-aware. The car is basically a metaphor for "Arctic Monkeys' next release". It's kinda silly to say it, the album is called The Car, it IS The Car.
Lonely, melancholic and misunderstood, like the cover depicts it. You'll never like this if you don't indulge at least a little bit in Alex Tuner's self-indulgence.
All the songs in someway or another are about their songwriting process/public perception, sometimes being more serious and dramatic (Sculptures of Anything ... read more
Pastiche mix of 2000's indie rock.
I won't rate this, because after Nothing to Declare straight Banquet ripoff I just lost all my interest in listening to this record.
From hooks to structures, from timbres to textures, every second i've heard of this remembers me of other songs, and it's extremely annoying.
I guess the only difference I can think of is the overblown production, which doesn't help either, giving this record even less authenticity.
No shame in picking up an aesthetic and ... read more
I was really hyped because of the singles, and after hearing the absolute banger of The Drummer, I was certain people were being too harsh on this album. Man was I wrong.
This is Unlimited Love all over again, a banger here and there, some ok songs here and there, and lots of extremely annoying duds. But this time is worse, since the duds are even more annoying than last time.
The only reason the score isn't lower is because of Eddie, The Drummer and Carry me Home, all awesome songs.

It literally sounds like they've plugged the guitars straight into the soundboard for PDA
The first half sure is "deeper" and more "profound", but I can't help but love the sludgy but catchy approach that is the focus on the second half. The trip hop industrial metal blend tracks are fucking insane. I fucking love the sounds in this album man.
The band is at their best when they stop trying to be happy Talking Heads. Second half of the album has pretty consistent quality, and 'Just What I Needed' is an absolute pop rock masterpiece. It's just hard to believe that the insultingly bad 'I'm in Touch with Your World' was made by the same people (AND for the same project).
