Billie singing a Bond song as opposed to Bond using a Billie song... if that makes sense to anyone but me... but the song is still pretty great and I can already picture the credits sequence with it. Not quite Adele but way better than that atrocious Sam Smith song
With a mini album or EP, you have to make the most of your short runtime. You only get a few minutes to captivate your audience after all. For Unlocked, Kenny Beats and Denzel Curry mostly make the most of it. KB can make beats that can match just about anyone these days, and his work for Denzel is no different. They're a bit murky, and a lot of the samples hint at a horror theme. Denzel's performance is on point, and I like the constant vocal manipulation to keep his words interesting. There's ... read more
Dude! Been waiting for these guys to return forever now. It's not their best song, even a little repetitive, but it's still good to hear these swinging disco-funk beats again. Hopefully more is in store!
Happy 10 years of Teen Dream. It's Beach House's first album that feels whole, from the elegant production to Victoria LeGrande's exquisite lyricism and performance. TD is full of singular moments that stick with you, from the opening guitar chords of "Zebra" to the heartwarming hook on "Take Care". LeGrande's coos give vivid life to these songs, even the dreamy "ahs" on "Norway". So much of the record is encased in sadness, like the melancholic ... read more
I can't think of many artists with as strong of a grip on their particular style as Chromatics. They are the absolute masters of synthwave, and "Toy" is yet another sonic masterpiece. I know we just got Closer To Grey but please, give me Dear Tommy this year...
How will dance music be defined in the 2020's? Where will the next Robyn's and Todd Terje's emerge from? The UK is a good bet to give some great ones, and Georgia is staking an early claim. Her sophomore album Seeking Thrills was completely produced by her, and she brings forth multiple sounds and styles. It doesn't always stick the landing, but it successfully functions as a way for Georgia to find her way about the dance world.
Entirely self-produced, Georgia has an ear for dance pop ... read more
My last Em album was MMLP2, which was enough to make me never want to listen to his new material ever again. And given what I've heard about Revival and Kamikaze, I wasn't missing out on much. Curiosity got the better of me though, and here we are with Music To Be Murdered By. It is... an album that has its moments. "Godzilla" with Juice WRLD is probably my favorite Em song in 15 years. The beat is solid and Eminem finds a nice balance between his fast-rapping obsession and regular ... read more
Oh, nu metal. When Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park are the zeniths of your genre, you get rightfully maligned. That sort of nu metal has been rightfully left in the Dubya era, but that's not to say there isn't a place for it in modern music. I Disagree, the latest from internet personality Poppy, takes the ideas Grimes was working with on her "We Appreciate Power" single and turns them way up. It makes ID a thrilling listen, one where Poppy channels her rage towards her personal struggles ... read more
This has the immediate catchiness some of the other singles were lacking. That bass is such an earworm. Technicolor is a word I often use to describe Tame Impala, and "Lost In Yesterday" might be the most applicable. Makes me even more excited for The Slow Rush.
Happy New Year! Red Velvet has nowhere to go but up, as their finale to the 'ReVe Festival" is a letdown. The first two were full of typical RV bops, but the third edition doesn't add much more. All previous songs are included in reverse order, an interesting if inconsequential choice. The new songs are alright, but there's fewer of them than old tracks, and that's a disappointment. Of the new tracks, "In & Out" is my favorite, but I'm not sure it'll be one I'll continuously ... read more
Macintosh Plus is a name that rightfully raises eyebrows, and this new song almost raised them off my head. If "Sick & Panic" doesn't define the way vaporwave moves for the next decade (as Floral Shoppe did for the 2010's), it'll absolutely be an intriguing path not many would be willing to take. This is more Aphex Twin than anything, breakbeat and unorthodox in the samples. It's not your mom's vaporwave, but there's not a boring moment in the 12 minute runtime. Very, very, very ... read more
It's a little bland at times, but Dua Lipa has some real singing chops and the beats are more fun than your average radio-friendly pop album. Nothing mindblowing yet but it's a promising debut, and if her recent singles are any indication, she's making good on that promise quickly. And the BLACKPINK feature on that bonus track is fire!
Standouts: Hotter Than Hell, IDGAF, Blow Your Mind (Mwah), Thinking 'Bout You, Kiss and Make Up

When it comes to belting k-pop bangers, the girls of WJSN are firmly in the top tier. "As You Wish", "Luckitty-cat", "WW" and "Badaboom" are super fun, capturing everything that makes k-pop enjoyable to a world audience. The beats are big and exciting, the hooks are simple and repeatable, and they're easy to listen to multiple times. What WJSN isn't the best at is the slow jam, and that's the weak point of As You Wish. "LIGHTS UP" is overly ... read more
After more-or-less selling out and becoming a pop-culture zenith, Chris Martin & co. could've continued hopping on the popular musical trends of the time. The thought of a trap-infused Coldplay song makes me shiver. Instead, the group returns with their most creative and enjoyable album in years. Everyday Life is a double album that deserves its runtime, vibrant with life and featuring some of the richest sounds in the band's history. It finds the band with a newfound focus on world music ... read more
Starry-eyed college sophomore me was a Ghost Stories defender. At the time I found Chris Martin's sad croons meaningful, and the mix of sparse electronica beats fitting of the record's theme. Jaded mid-20's wage slave me isn't as agreeable. I still admire the sparse sound to a degree, especially on the 22, A Million predictor "Midnight". It crawls through a cold, blurry electronic landscape that's constantly shifting, but most other efforts aren't as engaging. The sound leaves a lot ... read more
A welcome return for these guys. It's not as goofy as their past few singles, but did it make me feel good? You bet your ass it did.
FKA twigs' voice is like that of a nymph fleeting through a magical forest. She evokes a mysterious but intoxicating beauty in her music. Much like a fantasy tale, MAGDALENE can be serenely beautiful and unexpectedly pummeling, often in the same song. This brand of art pop is uniquely hers, and for the most part the music is stunning. Barring a few questionable production choices, MAGDALENE is a showcase full of must-hear music for one of the most fleeting talents in her genre.
The peaks of ... read more
