To say that Danzig II: Lucifuge is "almost as good as its predecessor" sells the album short. The truth is that it's almost better. Danzig II explores more diverse influences (delta blues, rockabilly, the melancholy ballad) and raises the standard of what Glenn Danzig is capable of in terms of songwriting ("Blood and Tears," "Her Black Wings") while still providing plenty of pummeling rock riffs, pinch harmonics, and singalong choruses. It's The Long Goodbye is a well-produced and well-performed collection of shoegaze and post-punk influenced pop-rock. It sounds pleasant going by, but I can't escape the feeling that I'm hearing the aesthetics of music I already like wrapped around a core of not-much-going-on.
I don't mind Morrissey's aged voice and flat deliveries, but very little here is memorable or even pleasant in passing except perhaps the last two tracks. The rest is negligible, except the conspiratorial "Notre-Dame," which is inexcusable.
