Zach Bryan - The Great American Bar Scene
81

Immaculate songwriting, standard grooves for knockin boots, amazing storytelling, and nice balance of loud and soft. The Great American Bar Scene is the best Zach Bryan has been. The opener for the album was perfect, I know it wasn’t really a song but man does it set the tone.

Nothing mind blowing on the instrumental end. Zach also reuses some of his own melodies which I don’t necessarily have a problem with but it does make for a couple stale moments.

Nirvana - In Utero

I have a past with Nirvana and metal/grunge music in general. Growing up I was always put off by it. The noisiness and intensity of that kind of music always rubbed me the wrong way. However, over the last few years, my taste in music has expanded a lot. I have been a lot more receptive to and even really liked a lot of grungier stuff. Noise rock and shoegaze music more broadly has been at the epicenter of most of the rock music I enjoy now, which is also very noisy. I also happen to be a huge ... read more

Bon Iver - SABLE, fABLE

An absolutely gorgeous return record for Bon Iver, some moments felt very slow but that is a very minor drawback for the scope of this project.

The prologue and story structure was really cool. I loved how they flowed into each other. The vocals were as passionate as ever and the features were amazing, especially on day one. An album glistening with hope and melancholy.

Favorites: things behind things behind things, speyside, everything is peaceful love, walk home, day home, from, if only I ... read more

Jack Van Cleaf - Fruit From the Trees

A very volatile listen.

It certainly has its moments. The first four songs absolutely hooked me. From there it was a slog of boring song structure and very mediocre vocal performances, aside from cowboy and holy smokes. I skipped a few of these.

Favorites: Ingrid, rattlesnake, black and blue, she keeps it cool, holy smokes

Least favorites: the master the captain, Margot, Pearl Harbor day, wild roses

R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi
55

I liked some of this, but for the most part I found this very bland. There was some good writing in places, and I found some instrumental moments, especially in Zither, fantastic.

I didn’t take away very much from it. I was originally going to listen to it again but I genuinely couldn’t find the drive to.

Favorites: how the west was won and where it got us, leave, be mine, zither, electrolite

Least favorites: undertow, e-bow the letter, binky the doormat, so fast so numb

venturing - Ghostholding

I loved revengeseekerz. Jane Removers discography in general is pretty immaculate. This project she’s been doing on the side was a similar direction she’s gone in before. It was a lot less abrasive, and Jane was kind of toying around with the hardcore sound that’s been pretty popular recently, with acts like flyingfish and novulent blowing up.

This was a very volatile listen for me. Some songs were straight up unfollowable, especially the second track. There was a lot of ... read more

The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow

This thing went from good for a second, to an absolute snoozefest in the middle, back to pretty good near the end.

I listened to it in 2 chunks, an hour and 24 minutes is a lot of run time for me, so I wanted to make sure I gave it a fair shake. The first half I turned off after timeless played.

The narrative of the album was pretty cool. It sounds like Abel is turning back to Christ, but maybe I’m reading too much into it. The metamorphosis he went through in this album was cool to ... read more

Slow Pulp - Moveys
83

EDIT: 91->83. Nothing groundbreaking. Still good music but I definitely overhyped it a little.

A catchy, diverse collection of slowcore dream pop and soft jams backed by acoustic instrumentation. I am hooked.

The title track had absolutely no business being on here and the album would be almost perfect if that wasn’t there. It completely throws off the ending of the album. Montana would have been a fantastic conclusion.

I loved the vocals, the instrumentals, the little details. All ... read more

The Movement - Set Sail

An infectiously fun reggae/rap/funk fusion album.

While the subject matter is for the most part just about having a good time, it makes you want to walk on the beach even if it’s raining outside. I love the singers voice, especially when he really gets into his bag. It’s impossible not to enjoy this thing.

My only gripe is the one dimensional writing as I said, and I felt like there was a slight lack of diversity. It wasn’t enough for me to really dig into but there were ... read more

Mad Season - Above

My girlfriend put me onto this. I have dabbled into grunge and really liked some of it in the past, but this was my first introduction to I guess the “grunge underground”

Most of this was absolutely heavenly.

Stayley’s voice is incredible. That mixed with the slowcore grunge sound of the instrumentals made it very enjoyable for me.

There were moments where I felt like it just kept dragging and I was failing to see the purpose of making the instrumental drone on for an extra ... read more

2hollis - star

A couple punchy beats and a bit of cool production does not overshadow just how much it feels like 2hollis is punching under his weight on this LP.

His past singles and songs specifically off of Boy and White Tiger make many of the songs on this LP feel insignificant and like filler content. While I did really like a few of the songs, I was left wanting more from this album. There were a few points where it really felt like he was just trying to draw out the tracklist. Ego and Sidekick could ... read more

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz

Edit: 93->100 the more I listen to this thing, the better it sounds. Even though there are 2 songs I’m not a fan of, the artistry in display is unlike anything I’ve heard. I have been listening to this album and nothing else since it dropped.

2hollis and Jane Remover both dropped. What a day for terminally online people.

Jane Remover is back and louder, cooler, and more confident than ever. The production on this thing is absolutely insane. Jane has also really come into their ... read more

Wallows - More

A pretty solid EP. I felt like Wallows stepped away from their traditional sound, specifically on the first two songs, and I thought it worked very well. It was something new, and I was enamored with it.

The rest, while it’s not bad, certainly isn’t mind blowing and doesn’t feel distinct enough to feel a type of way about. Just kind of mid. I REALLY dig the first two songs though.

Favorites: not alone, deep dive

Least favorites: your new favorite song

Owl City - Ocean Eyes
72

I found this album really hard to hate. I understand some of it is super bright, but I think it gives it charm. I also think there was a lot of hit potential on this album. A lot of these songs sound like they would have seen similar success to fireflies so long as they were to hit the right ears.

I did think dental care was pretty hard to sit through. But that was the only song I genuinely had a problem with. I thought the rest of it ranged from alright to most of them being very ... read more

Frost Children - SPEED RUN

Throbbing beats dude. The bass on this is otherworldly. I really dig some of the ideas here. The creativity of this duo is on full display, as long as their ability to make ear-wormy hooks.

However, there were some awkward-sounding lyrics and some janky flows pretty late into the record. Some of it wasn't inherently bad, but it definitely hit my ears wrong at points.

Favorites: coup, sick trip, all i got, serpent, let it be, angel's thoughts
Least favorites: obsessed, wonderland, ... read more

Novo Amor - Birthplace

Listened to this on my walk on the beach at sunset today. My rating will probably be clouded and biased because of the setting I was in.

I love Novo Amor man. Absolutely ethereal. "Cannot Be Whatsoever" is one of my favorite folk pop albums ever. I hadn't heard this one before aside from oh round lake and state lines, so I was excited to see if this album lived up to those two songs.

It did, and I found some even better ones.

Mt. Joy - Rearrange Us

This album started off as a pretty solid indie rock album for me. It only got better as I kept listening. “Witness” followed by “Us” is such a gutting run. It like makes me feel visceral heartbreak. The story of this album is a hard one to sit through, but it’s heartbreakingly beautiful

The grooves are top notch, the vocals are a little much sometimes, but the songwriting and lyrics are killer. This is a hell of an album.

Favorites: pretty much all of them

Bruce Springsteen - Letter to You

Pretty good.

I personally had kind of a hard time really sinking my teeth into it and FEELING it. It’s definitely a record I will come back to though.

Favorites: one minute you’re here, letter to you, burning train, last man standing, the power of prayer, house of a thousand guitars, if I was a priest

Least favorites: Janey needs a shooter, song for orphans

The Moss - Kentucky Derby

The moss cemented themselves into the indie underground with this one. A pretty great track list. Nothing mind blowing, but I love the guys voice. The album has a few dull moments, I kinda lost steam at heartbreaker. I was enamored with most of it though.

Favorites: storm cloud baby, sea biscuit, fiftyshadesofhay, (haunted) basement, tell me, finish line

Least favorites: heartbreaker

Glass Animals - I Love You So F***ing Much
51

This is an album that I really was enjoying at first. The more I listened to it the more lifeless it sounded. The more I listened the more it sounded like they were trying to replicate what they did on heat waves.

It’s mixed well, sits nice on the ears, but is painfully uncompelling. Some of the lyrics are just blatantly cringe worthy. I like most of the instrumentation and when they try to do something other than what they are known for it actually tended to work for me.

It’s a ... read more
