Relieved that Gorillaz are still able to sound inspired and fresh 25 years into their tenure. Albarn's endless curiosity into indiscriminate collaboration allow "The Mountain" to shine with modern production and truly globe-trotting imagination. By no means is this Plastic Beach 2, but a worthy addition to the ever expanding catalogue and a much needed improvement from Cracker Island. I mean, that intro track alone... gorgeous. Nothing after matches the same level of innovation and coalescent electronica. An essential project, but always in a frustrating way.
Opening with the single of the year, “Man Made of Meat” gracefully knits together catchy choruses and tight synth punk with expertly timed belches and shameless declarations. “I’m subscribed to your mom’s OnlyFans.” Sebastian Murphy brashly proclaims.
