Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

It has been a while since I looked at a post rock album, let’s change that. Post Rock as a whole has been sort of an enigma for me. Not that I do not like it but it sort of that odd genre of music that I never seem to fully understand. At one point it is about textures and lengthy suites with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and then it becomes some kind of evolution to space rock and psych rock with Crippled Black Phoenix, to then be cryptic, loud, and abrasive experimental music with Swans. ... read more

As I stated before in my Hybris review, there were two big gothic retro progressive rock bands, Änglagård and Discipline. I already talked about Änglagård, so I figured to have a little discussion about Discipline. Discipline actually came a little before Änglagård, coming into the scene in 1987 but didn't make a full length album until 1993 with the album Push and Profit. Like Änglagård, after their second studio release they disappeared until 2011 ... read more

In the 90s, more retro and symphonic styles of progressive rock was taking a turn. Bands such as The Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard, and Echolyn were garnering some big buzz, and high praises across the board. Their styles and ways of creating new and exciting music really helped them stand on their own way. Unlike those bands, there are more obscure and darker sounding bands from around that time that looked at the more bright and celebratory Prog rock music that was going around a lot and ... read more

Please indulge me a bit. I stated before and I’ll state again that I do enjoy pop music if done right. I think there are a lot of pop artists out there who have some seriously impressive work under their hood. I however do not enjoy pop artists who make pop that sounds like they are just making music to make a quick buck. This can be seen in a lot of modern media of quote on quote “artists” making movies/shows/pictures/albums/etc for the sake of getting a few bills in their ... read more

More new progressive music this year. Honestly I feel like all in all this year has been a great year for Prog rock, heck I could even say it may rival some years from the 70s like 1973 or 1975. We’re heading into a familiar yet a tad different territory. In a land filled with King Crimsons and black midis, the more weird and experimental side of Prog is one where everything feels like a rollercoaster of mayhem, but never once did any of those bands have a sort of album that was a lot ... read more

I just realized I never made a review of any albums that are a bit more contemporary when it comes to the metal genre. Obviously I have reviewed a couple of metal albums, but nothing like this. I am not one for noise rock, I think most of the time I would rather not listen to an album that just goes overboard in the extreme harshness of sound, but I do know a ton of people like that type of stuff, especially since a ton of noise rock albums are considered some of the most influential albums ... read more

Now I do not like making negative reviews, nor do I like making short reviews, nor do I, again, like making reviews of classic albums, but this was recommended to me to check out and as someone who loves New Age music, this album is just rough.

Each song on this album is just the lowest common denominator for being generic and synthy Prog electronic music. Each song does not have a personality, barely much so. In fact I think they are just trying to take and spark the flame that artists like ... read more

In a general sense of the word, and in most cases, I do not go out of my way to listen to classical music as I am particularly never keen or interested in the genre. While being a huge music nerd who loves works that go for more symphonic or orchestral sounds, IE Progressive Rock to name the obvious, I still never took the time to really take a look, listen, and grasp classical music albums. However, today I felt interested. I wanted to listen to a classical piece of music. For some reason ... read more

Music is a divisive experience. While one may love one type of style, they might not like another that someone else may also like. This divide is purely because of our own tastes and what we want in music. My taste may differ from yours and vice versa. With that I will say that I am not the biggest fan of this style of music. New Wave and Synth Wave are rarely what I listen to. Obviously bands like Talking Heads and some of Kate Bush’s albums are the exceptions to this, but relatively I ... read more

So far I have reviewed every studio album by Between The Buried and Me. With that I think it is high time to take a look at their most recent album. This time we get another sequel on our hands. We had The Parallax II, Automata II, and Colors II. It is a trifecta of sequels. This is of course a sequel to the ever so popular Colors released 14-15 years ago. During those 14-15 years, the world had changed drastically. New presidents, a virus, isolation, protests. It was an off putting time for ... read more

Well the first part was a little rough, but part two is a different story. Before really diving into The Great Misdirect and realizing how much of a masterpiece it is, this was my favorite Between The Buried and Me album. I am not joking, this used to be what I considered to be their cream of the crop. Now looking back on it, it's still pretty great, but it definitely is a little bit less of a strong album than it once was to me.

The first song here is The Proverbial Bellow. So with this ... read more

So after their release of the mixed but good album Coma Ecliptic, the band wanted to push themselves to a new direction. This time they decide to ditch the long album lengths and instead make a split concept album, much like The Parallax. Unlike The Parallax, these two parts will be released four months apart, to most likely boost more sales and streams. These two albums seem to be rather forgotten about, heck I think their first album and Parallax I are more talked about. I can definitely see ... read more

It’s that time of day again where I review another album from my favorite metal band. So in 2015 after their goliath 2 part epic of The Parallax, it seems the band were hungry for more and wanted to tell more stories. So that was when Coma Ecliptic was conceived, a concept album about a man who is in a coma and explores his own psyche and his past lives. A lot less complex and epic than the Parallax but definitely something that can really be good if done right. This is probably their ... read more

The sequel to their EP, The Parallax. This is one of the most popular albums the band has released, heck maybe more so than Colors. A concept album brimming with reality swapping and interplanetary epics. Story lovers always love a good sci-fi story. This album is gonna be quite the adventure due to its long winded length. So this may be a rather interesting review.

The album begins with a short prelude called Goodbye To Everything. Now unlike most stories this starts at the end. I will not ... read more

So Between The Buried and Me up until this point made more loose concept albums. Albums that have a connected theme yet no story, thematic in a sense. However in their albums, especially Colors and The Great Misdirect we had songs like Sun Of Nothing and Swim To The Moon having big stories. The band could indeed create something of a concept with their endless array of ideas. So after the release of The Great Misdirect they decided to switch to a new label and create their signature prog rock ... read more

Now this has been the one I’ve been waiting to review. Ever since I started reviewing each and every album by Between The Buried and Me, I slightly got more excited each and every time because the day where I would review this masterpiece would arrive soon, and here we are. As I stated in my Colors review, they have released more masterpieces, in fact I believe there is a sort of trifecta of them. This is the big one. You know when a band has a sort of album that’s like their big moment, you know like Dark Side of the Moon, Sgt. Peppers, Lift Your Skinny Fist, Metropolis Part 2, you know stuff that is so good that even till’ today you can hear someone talking about it on discord or RYM or heck even on the wretched filth that is 4Chan. Cover albums are weird. The entire concept of a cover album is weird. Like you enter into a studio and instead of recording original songs, you instead record other people’s work. I am not saying covers are bad, it’s just weird that bands devote albums to recording covers. It’s even more weird when you consider Between The Buried and Me made one. Of all the bands, this one strikes me the oddest to make a covers album due to their style of music. This is a studio album from the ... read more

After their already starlight achievements on The Silent Circus, Between The Buried and Me experienced a bit of a fall where multitude of band members left leaving only Tommy Rogers and Paul Waggoner out in the dust. In replacement for the lost members, we have Dan Briggs on bass, Dustin Waring on rhythm guitar, Blake Richardson on drums which would later become the main lineup for the band even to today. This lineup change definitely improved the sound of the band drastically. Their first two ... read more

With an already great album to boot, Between The Buried and Me were already on their way to progressive greatness. It is now that we see them truly experimenting in the field that they sown from their first album and truly solidified their role as an awesome progressive metal band. The Silent Circus is definitely a lot more praised in the Prog community, and for good reasons, and those reasons are gonna be what I will talk about throughout this album’s run.

The album begins with a two ... read more
