Sighhh I was certainly hoping for something a little more flavourful with this new era, DCC was fun in the sense that it was different for the band, and despite being a weaker sound it was still very enjoyable. This new album seems to be returning to the heavier rock, which is great and all, but I’d welcome it more if it wasn’t so run of the mill, especially being the lead single. I fear it doesn’t stand out in their discography quality wise, it’s just fine, a fine rock ... read more
Heya, I recently started taking journalism a bit more seriously, including writing album reviews, and I decided to practice a more professional style of reviewing with my second favourite album of all time, Twin Fantasy (Face to Face), as for some reason I had never written an actual review of it previously. Hope I did a decent job lol.
In 2011 Car Seat Headrest pioneer and frontman Will Toldedo released the now beloved album ‘Twin Fantasy’ to Bandcamp, a crunchy, heartfelt indie ... read more
While not having the highs that That! Feels Good! has, Superbloom is very consistent in being a brilliant collection of disco and pop, rich in gorgeously confident vocals, funky beats and rich, stellar production. Aside from a few later tracks that are fairly run of the mill for Jessie’s standards, most of what she has to offer here is very high quality, and infectiously fun. It’s obviously just as sensual as ever but also features some very heartfelt moments that really helps it go ... read more
Another surprise hit from this year, MANIA is just one of those records that oozes with a certain charm for me, with the sugary production and funky beats that are pretty irresistible to groove along with, and Micah’s wooing vocals that are prime for contemporary disco, it kinda does everything well for me. With the nature of the sound the tracks are quite short and aren’t adventurous in execution, so it’s definitely not an album that challenges you to think or defines the ... read more
Somehow I truly underestimated RAYE, despite really digging her debut. This album is a stunning symphony of reflection and emotion with a charm that can only be heard through the most heartfelt R&B. Some parts are a little underwhelming, but the highs are truly sensational, and will hopefully be celebrated for a while to come. I eagerly await whatever she has to offer next, because now I am sure she will deliver.
WE HAVE ANOTHER 96!!
Honestly this rollout was a MESS. However, the singles were fucking amazing, so I was ready to move on and accept that I was finally gonna get another 10/10 album from none other than the Bedford Boys, Don Broco.
Even though the album tracks weren’t at the same level as a couple of the singles, the quality remained consistent, as did the insane energy. The band’s switch up from alt rock / pop to straight up nu-metal has been a perfect maturation for the band, ... read more
2000 ratings!
I didn’t really have an album in mind for this, I listened to the first songs of a couple albums and ultimately chose this one.
Honestly, really pleasant sonically, the vocalist has a strong voice, and the instrumentals are performed well with a variety to keep it somewhat flavourful throughout the lengthy runtime, but it absolutely lacked any remarkable features that would bring me back. Just consistently solid throughout, which isn’t anything to complain about but ... read more
Brief review because I really enjoyed it.
Definitely some bias with this one but I can confidently say I think this is the best the band have sounded quality wise. Otherwise:
•Theresa’s vocals are consistently fantastic
•The production is very solid
•Guitar work shines at times, same for drumming
•The writing is a bit repetitive for the rock songs but otherwise really surprised me with the flavour and grooviness
•I think the band experimenting a little bit more ... read more
There are two short segments I don’t super love on this track. First, the opening part where Matt goes absolutely wild on the drums. It’s very cool, and overbearing, but doesn’t really suit the rest of the song. Secondly, Chad’s moments during the first chorus, again, it’s not really their style, it sounds a bit generic, underwhelming, thought later on in the song it feels more emotionally driven and works better. Otherwise, this song is exquisite, fucking kickass, ... read more
It’s kinda crazy how many fantastic albums there are out there that are rated really high that I’ve managed to miss all these years later. Easily the best Japanese album I’ve heard, probably the best album I’ve heard since Maruja’s debut, and one that I deeply regret not finding sooner. A good 4/5 songs into this album I was thinking I was about to have my first 100 in three years, which says it all really. Winning Strip is chaotic, beaming with ambition, dowsed in ... read more
I couldn’t be more excited for the next SamLRC album after this, what a cozy, gorgeous, funky vibe, I could listen to another 3 hours of this.
It’s my 21st birthday! To celebrate, I’m going to listen to and re-review my favourite album from my favourite artist, twenty one pilots, that being Trench! This album came to me when I was still young and didn’t really listen to music, but something about it was so enticing, with such rich production and gorgeous songwriting, I think this was by far the best album I’d heard at the time, and as a result it helped shape my music taste to what it is today.
As I normally ... read more
This is the first time I can say I knew an artist before ANY of you guys did, so I might as well talk about this one. I saw (and photographed) Dove Ellis performing at a local music festival in 2023, it was the main stage so there were plenty of people about but I doubt there were more than 20-30 people that actually knew who he was, if that. I didn’t photograph the crowd so idk, but that means it wasn’t many at all. If there’s anything I can distinctly remember from that ... read more
One of those albums that’s just so satisfying to listen through, when the passion meets innovation and takes a sound that I would normally struggle to enjoy and creates an album that wows me. The Mocking Stars reminds me of my first time hearing Introvert by Simz, not necessarily in sound or messaging but the raw feeling of “oh, this is doing everything so well, I really wish I was into some of these genres more than I am”. This kind of album may come along only once or twice ... read more
This is probably the first time I’m genuinely baffled that people generally enjoy an album. Lovejoy have made some great songs, and I’m not biased with Wilbur being a cunt, this is seriously really bad. I can’t find any sort of soul behind the writing, the instrumentals and lyrics are bland, occasionally just laughable, there’s hardly any energy, Wilbur sounds like he’s improved as a singer but he isn’t utilising this on this album, outside of maybe one or ... read more
Dispirited Spirits / Dias has once again blessed our ears with his captivating soundscapes, though I am admittedly not as blown away this time compared to The Redshift Blues. Firstly, this album is consistently gorgeous, the instrumentation is so delicate at times, bringing forward enchanting strings and adding some saxophone here and there to really soothe the listener, whereas in other parts there is much more intensity than what we are familiar with, such as Irithyll, which is pure chaotic ... read more
Trying to review this single is just a broken record at this point, because they’ve been so consistent with these last three singles.
Their production since Technology has improved so dramatically that it really feels like they’ve taken a leap from great to incredible as a rock band.
While the quality is there I think the writing is a little weaker than the other two singles, generally being a bit of a safer sounding song in some areas, but that’s kinda my only criticism. ... read more
This time around I’m just gonna keep it fairly brief.
Breach is TØP’s way of closing a decade long storyline that they have been building for their fans, and it’s not up to me to say whether they did a good job with that aspect of things, but I have some issues with the music itself.
Starting off with the positives, the singles are still great, City Walls is both a great opener and a great closer (with the MV), RAWFEAR is super catchy, Garbage has really engaging ... read more
Haunting, compelling, powerful and raw as fuck, Maruja have proved that they don’t just have a strong sound, but they are truly a talent that will inspire many for years to come.
The consistency of the quality on this record is very impressive, each member of the band gives it their all on every track, the vocals are emotional, controlled and flow well, the saxophone is gorgeous yet daunting across the whole album, the drums are capable of finding unique rhythms that blow you away, the ... read more
Good fucking lord, this band just can’t miss anymore can they? Absolutely song of the year material right here. Where do I even start dude.
Rob: Coming in with the sickest heavy vocals as always, bringing possibly his greatest scream performance to date, nailing the energy and intensity, as well as the softer parts too.
Matt: Also a fantastic vocal performance, sounding so confident and passionate, and so fucking beautiful at the end there. The drumming is also just what this song ... read more
