Not sure why I ever had this rated as anything less than a 100. This is every bit as good as you could ever want a double album to be. “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” is basically a top five song of all time for me. Maybe top four. The never-ending struggle between artist and inspiration framed as a toxic on-and-off-again relationship with all the prose and spectacle of an epic Greek myth. It is glorious in its desperate, fervent melodrama. The entire band turns it up to 11, ... read more
Fucked up that this album is SEVEN YEARS OLD man time flies. Played the shit out of this when it dropped, then there were a few years where I thought I was too cool to like it (lol). Running it back today, there are just too many fantastic songs on here to deny. ‘DAMN.’ isn’t as conceptually tight as Kendrick’s best stuff (to this day I think the endorsement of the whole “play the album in reverse” fan theory was just Kendrick buying into his own hype) and ... read more
Generally pretty lame. Phoned-in playlist fodder with very little direction or quality control, but it’s aight while it’s on. The one exceptional track here is “First Night”, a wonderfully absurd little song that crams more personality into its 3 minutes than you’ll find in any of ‘All Is Yellow’s remaining forty. Teezo, Juicy J, and Denzel all did their thing on that track. “Doomsday” was pretty fun too! Rest of it, ehhhhh…
Sweet little album with sensual vibes and subdued brain-tickling grooves. Not sure I totally get the hype but I do see plenty of room to grow for TYLA as an artist. There are a few crummy commercial hooks holding some of the tunes back, but these songs are consistently well performed and intimately produced. The subtlety of this projects leads me to believe that it may grow on me from here. All in all a very respectable debut I think! :3
Fav Tunes: On and On, On My Body
Way better than I ever gave it credit for. Talk Talk is one of my favorite groups, mostly due to everything they released AFTER 'It's My Life', but upon re-listen, this album can absolutely hold its own, provided you can tolerate the 80s-est production you've ever heard. Even though this album's overall aesthetic is rather dated, I still love the synth sounds the band played with here. So much more texture and color than anything off of their debut, and all the additional instrumentation goes ... read more
I’m sympathetic towards this album. A clear step up from the bonafide disasterpiece that was ‘Man of the Woods’, there were stretches of this album that I found to be pleasant enough while it was playing, if a bit unmemorable and colorless. The biggest problem here is the length. There’s a genuinely decent album hiding in here if you cut around all the gristle.
Fav Tunes: Drown, My Favorite Drug
Porter Robinson’s “Stan”. Sounding real good! Excited to here more from this emo-pop pivot.
I dig this, and I can only see it growing on me from here. Her voice was the biggest hurdle for me, and while I’m still not the biggest fan of her singing, it didn’t stop me from being immersed in this album’s ethereal brutality. Lots of clear talent on display here, well-structured songs that reach a variety of despondent sonic climaxes. All the things I didn’t love about this are really just a matter of personal preference. Good stuff!
Fav Tunes: Mean, In the Land
Kenny Mason has released a lot of songs that I've loved in the past few years ("Firestarter" off of 'Angelic Hoodrat' is excellent) but he has yet to do it for me consistently on a full length project. Even an offering as short as '9' here isn't without its missteps. He's a very talented, creative rapper though. I'll just keep waiting for him to deliver the goods.
Idk, everything she’s made post-‘Pageant Material’ just has not hit right for me. Strongly dislike the production here, the squeaky-clean reverb-soaked lead guitars and processed vocals feel completely at odds with the folksy, down-to-earth vibe the album is clearly shooting for. The effect is kinda uncanny. She’s singing about being in “the heart of the woods” but these songs couldn’t feel less connected to nature. She sounds like a robot or, shoot I ... read more
Curtis Mayfield really was one of the greats. One of the best writers and arrangers from this era of soul music, and ‘This Is My Country’ only gives you a taste of how sublime his solo work would be. Even still, this album contains a handful of the most beautiful soul ballads of the late 60s. “Fool for You” is an absurdly pretty song, the teary-eyed strings that stretch upwards through the chorus are truly gorgeous, plain and simple.
Plus, the 10 tracks that comprise ... read more
The slower tracks like “Dawn of Meggido” didn’t do a whole lot for me, there’s not enough dynamics for the song to sound properly menacing. But when Celtic Frost pick up the pace, ‘To Mega Therion’s power is hard to deny. Gotta be one of the most devilish guitar tones in all of 80s metal. “The Usurper” is terrific, whole album sounds positively immoral.
Not bad imo, but doesn’t hold a candle to the ‘sweetener’ - ‘thank u, next’ era. “yes, and” was pretty tepid as a lead single, one that already feels dated, but there are still some jams deeper into the tracklist. I look forward to hearing “bye” on the radio all year, glorious start to the album, sounds like a huge hit already. It’s a dazzling retro disco track in the vein of early MJ but with a modern punch to its kick drums. It has ... read more
Absolutely wonderful, brightened up my whole day. These guys are well into their 70s and they’re still making traditional heavy metal that sounds straight out of the 80s. Like seriously. This and their last full-length, 2018’s ‘Firepower’, sound like they were recorded IN 1984, shimmering, chrome-plated production and all. Rob Halford has the kind of showy, theatrical voice that you would expect to really suffer with age, but he sounds terrific on these new songs! Like a ... read more
Charli XCX's star-studded big-budget self-titled record was somewhat of a make-or-break moment for her career as an albums artist, a colossal swing of pop experimentalism that, by all accounts, has gone down as a success! I love Charli's music, and I love the bulk of this album too, but I find it to be quite a bit messier than popular opinion lets on. The thesis of 'Charli' seems to be finding harmony between her love of sweet, well-structured traditional pop songs, and her ambitions as a ... read more
Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood, but I found this to be obnoxious and sauceless. Particularly that second track, self-indulgent and awful. Opener was mildly pretty but that’s about it. Don’t know why I’d wanna listen to this when literally any King Crimson album exists.
