the production and electronics surrounding at least the majority of the tracks is really really good, and I do like the glitchy dystopian atmosphere they're trying to go for, but the actual songs tend to be really bland and uninteresting with very few exceptions. most of these just do the exact same shit they were doing before but with a slightly different atmosphere and without the charm that came with those, and the vocals can be really rough in spots even for Corey. there are some exceptions ... read more
a very mixed bag, with some songs being really really good, many others being mediocre and meaningless, and a few others being actually bad. I certainly can appreciate the innovation here and it is quite impressive for its time, but many songs should have either been blended with others (Spiral Theme and I'm a Frayed Knot are amazing enough on their own tho) or scrapped entirely.
what a coincidence that 2 of my top 5 records for 2023 sound demented and almost nervous in a sense. I mean, this album definitely deserves that top 5 as not only is the wordplay and lyrical content spectacular and the production is amazing, but it also has both an engaging and disturbing narrative (both of which I love) that helps guide the record into something so impactful yet also so damn catchy. while I do mostly prefer the calmer and more atmospheric pieces of the record, the demented ... read more
despite all the noise and the screaming, there is just something so tragic and unsettling that truly makes this record special. some songs are more chaotic/more tragic than the others, but for the most part, there is a nice balance that grants the listener both a harrowing and haunting experience. the production is amazing and the idea to use samples from other songs in your discography is certainly intriguing. and the guest vocals from Kristen Hayter/Lingua Ignota? while they may not ... read more
genuinely one of the best debut records I have ever heard. it's truly astonishing how well-written and emotional this album is, on top of the instrumentals being overall spectacular. and above that, this has some of the best material I've heard in quite a while, with I Don't Love and The Big Gloom namely being standouts. even some of the lesser tracks on this thing are amazing, and the best are just out of this world. it's amazing, I would highly recommend giving this a listen. it will be ... read more
a very interesting listen for sure, it perfectly encapsulates what it would feel like to have a mental breakdown. it's truly physcotic.
it has everything you would expect from a nine inch nails record....and a whole lot more
depressingly beautiful indie rock from start to finish, and truly filled with heart and emotion. it's truly a tragedy that we lost an artist with so much potential.
who knew that an entire nearly two-hour long nine inch nails instrumental album would be this PEAK
why does this cat look so joyful, does he not know that this is a venetian snares album?
