Tyler, The Creator - Cherry Bomb
64

Listening to Cherry Bomb on shuffle is like playing Russian Roulette. There's like a 2/3 chance of getting a song that's just okay, a 1/6 chance of getting a really great song, and a 1/6 chance of getting pure ear rape.

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
88

A dense collection of standout electronic tunes that dwell in an isolated, cold world of it's own. Certain songs do tend to overstay their welcome, but Boards of Canada introduce so many distinct sounds that there is sure to be at least a few tracks that will stick with any listener.

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
96

Viktor Vaughn brings the concept of the villain to a more intense level unexplored by MF DOOM's previous efforts. The tone of Vaudeville Villain is rich in dark atmospheric details that stand apart from every other comparably edgy hip-hop projects. The song progression feels like the listener is an accomplice to the title villain, following him through dangerous encounters, scandalous hookups, all told with the same humorous songwriting that DOOM is well known for.

Funkadelic - Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow
69

Funkadelic is one of my favorite music groups but this really only feels like a slightly lesser version of their debut project. There are some good songs to be found here though, just nothing that crazy.

Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside
82

Quiet kid music for quiet kids with great taste in production

Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
99

Isaac Hayes is a name I've only come to familiarize myself with in the past few months. Having heard the mass praise this album receives, and being as enthusiastic about Soul music as I am, I had very high expectations. This completely blew them out of the water.

For starters, "Walk On By" is the greatest song of all time.

To be more specific with why Isaac Hayes is a genius, you need only to hear the dense, masterful and cinematic instrumental compositions. Despite being only ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Wolf
70

Going from making songs like B.S.D. to getting an Erykah Badu feature just one album apart is crazy work.
Who would've thought that being slightly less homophobic would be a good move

King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader
86

With this new persona, MF DOOM finds his production strong suit of lo-fi beats similar to the works of artists like Nujabes.
Lyrically, King Geedorah is overshadowed by DOOM's other personas which slightly hurts the memorability of this project relative to his other works. Take Me To Your Leader is an essential part of the growth of one of the greatest rappers of all time, but doesn't stand as one of his greater highlights.

Sade - Diamond Life
100

The feelings of mellow romance that Sade helped popularize have aged remarkably well, blending Soul, Jazz, and Blues music in a way entirely their own. Diamond Life invokes a sense of beauty and grace in a unique way that feels confident, but purposeful. Sexy, but written with creative intent.

Before getting into this I would like to emphasize that I largely judge the music I listen to off of my own personal enjoyment of it, and I apologize if this review is a mess.

As of the time of writing this, and after several listens, I cannot bring myself to connect with Deathconsciousness in any meaningful way. I was aware going into this project that I would not necessarily resonate with some of the subject matter due to the overwhelmingly depressing themes. I did not expect for this ... read more

Funkadelic - Funkadelic
79

If only this came out nowadays it could be Phonkadelic 🙏

MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday
89

The amazing technical skill DOOM showcases this early into his solo rap career by itself is enough to make this an underground classic. Where this album truly shines in comparison to DOOM's later projects is the authentic charm of the chill beats and record scratches. The qualities of MF DOOM as an emcee are at their most pure in this album. Intelligent lyricism, tight flows, great humor, it's all here and as good as it could've possibly been for a debut project.

高中正義 [Masayoshi Takanaka] - BRASILIAN SKIES
98

EDIT: (94 -› 98)
This man really turned the Star Wars theme into the grooviest Samba tune I've ever heard.

Takanaka has recently become one of my personal favorite artists of all time, and I believe Brasilian Skies stands as his most enjoyable project. This is an album that is truly without words in it's greatness, and deserves to reach the ears of everyone.

Laufey - Bewitched
67

A little hit or miss when it comes to faithfully bringing life back to the traditional pop sound, but there's lots of promise here. I would hope to see more ambition and personality in her next project, as Laufey's vocal abilities are very apparent. She just needs more new ideas.

Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
76

Grimy production and complex flows define Doris, and help lay the groundwork for Earl's later releases. The lyrical density of tracks like Hive are what will keep you coming back to this project. However, most of what makes Doris great is largely found between tracks 4-8, leaving something to be desired as a whole.

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
97

Coltrane showcases the underutilization of the soprano saxophone in arguably his greatest work. The unique tone Coltrane brings with his solos feels incredibly natural but entirely fresh. Each member of the quartet gets their turn in the spotlight throughout this project. The fluttery and calm sound of McCoy Tyner's piano is what ties this together as one of Jazz's greatest works, a project that defies time and continues to impress.

Le Tigre - Le Tigre
65

Where there is quality punk themes, Le Tigre doesn't fully deliver with their musicality. It is easy to appreciate the lack of filter on this project, but it comes at the price of occasionally sounding like menu music for a Gameboy Color game.

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin
50

Goblin is many things. But in one word, it is peculiar. Tyler is very obviously conscious of his edgy and somewhat problematic lyrics, making Goblin into more of a shocking statement towards the music industry rather than a genuine misstep. Despite the good ideas that are present at various points in the tracklist, Tyler is only really finding his footing in this album.

Tame Impala - Currents
83

The staggering highs of tracks like Let It Happen, The Moment, and The Less I Know the Better are what makes Currents one of the most defining albums of modern alternative music.

Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo
91

Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist perfectly compliment each other's work in a way that makes all too much sense. Alfredo thrives from it's superb and mesmerizing production style that puts me in a trance throughout the entire runtime. On top of arguably The Alchemist's best work, we see Freddie Gibbs deliver brilliant lyricism and incredibly tight flows across each track. Features from Benny the Butcher, Tyler The Creator, and Conway the Machine are truly just the cherry on top of ... read more
