Very strong return to form for Cordae, by far his most fun and yet his most personal and emotional album up to this point, inspired by both the deaths of many close to him and the birth of his daughter
Also I desperately need to hear more of him with Anderson Paak, because holy god these two have fantastic chemistry
I love works of art that completely atom bomb your emotions, and even I was left shook by this. Every moment of this record is so raw and powerful in a way that is rare anywhere, and it also helps that the writing on this is beyond extraordinary. I’m probably now gonna have to do what I did post my first Deathconsciousness listen and choose something wholesome to follow this up with.
This gave me a headache.
This is the best album of the decade.
I literally cannot listen to this album more than once every few months because of how intense my response to it is.
Holy shit this clicked for me way more than I thought it would. This is some of the realest, hardest hitting, most emotionally charged rapping you’ll find out there. I’m now going to check out more Griselda, cause this was just great.
Does a lot of things very well, but to me makes him more a one to watch then someone doing amazing artistic work right now.
His vocal talent is undeniably immense, and he shows some incredible versatility here, but I can’t help but feel like he’s missing the artistry to really jump to the upper tiers of rap just yet.
As someone who’s been quietly rooting for Halsey to release an outright great album for years, I’m so fucking glad this is it. While it is a little bit inconsistent, this is probably the most naked and honest release from a major artist this year, and its all over the place nature actually helps enhance some of its themes.
Could very easily end up as a 100 for me eventually, this is a truly unique sonic experience. This takes the somewhat beaten into the ground genre of synthpop and twists it into 9 different dark, thrilling, beautiful, sensual, Gothic shapes. A must listen for anyone even remotely interested in pop.
Consistently a great indie folk album, but only contains flashes of the genius he would unleash several years down the line
Not as great as their first three, but still a consistently good and enjoyable rock album
This is objectively really awesome, and one of the most difficult to not love albums of all time, but just one quick question. What the fuck is The Murder Mystery doing on this album? Like a good chunk of their longer, more experimental tracks I find it interesting without ever being particularly great, although I do think it’s stronger than, like, European Son or the Gift. I guess the only other thing I’ll add here is that due to this albums more laid back sound, the lower points ... read more
One of those albums that’s just so willfully bizarre that even the moments that don’t work have my utmost respect. The Velvets at their most playful, outright silly at times. As for the Gift, the most divisive track on here, I’m of the opinion that its more interesting than good, but that’s at least something right?
Here’s my take on why this album will likely always be one of the most important and breathtaking albums ever released: I straight up could not guess what year this was produced if I didn’t know it already. This could be a psychedelic rock record from the 70s or an indie rock album released last week and either way it would be completely believable, and it’s even more amazing to me that it’s actually from the 60s. The amount of great music to have emerged from this one ... read more
I genuinely don’t know if I’ve ever encountered a better mood booster in any medium than this album. It just puts a big dumb smile on my face every time.
My first taste of the Surfers, and I enjoyed this WAY more then I thought I would. This album feels like classic rock refracted through a billion fun house mirrors.
An incredibly dynamic and poignant album that is exactly something all of us need to hear right now. It’s rare to find a post-rock album this able to change its mood on a dime, but GYBE pull it off here.
I love the instrumentation and intensity of this project, as well as its very playful nature, but I’m sorry, this guys delivery always turns me off no matter how many times I hear it
This isn’t outstanding by any stretch of the imagination, but I really don’t understand the level of vitriol some people direct at this song, it’s super harmless and honestly kind of charming
Ok, so two things:
1. God do I wish this man was not a total asshole because he is truly one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation
2. This score actually feels low to me considering this record has two of the greatest songs of all time on it and another song that I would also consider perfect (Gentle Moon) but I feel like apart from those three the record is just kinda good, and doesn’t ever really jump out at you, but those three moments are so breathtaking that this is beyond ... read more
