Sprain - The Lamb as Effigy
95

I remember coming across this album on Bandcamp when there was the first single, Man Proposes, God Disposes. I got pumped cause I was into post-rock/experimental rock music in that year and this was so up my alley. Was my AOTY for 2023. I've relistened multiple times (remembering this is a 96-minute album btw) and finally came around to express my thoughts and opinions on this album. Honestly one of the most unique-sounding albums in a music world where music boundaries are being pushed to ... read more

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus
83

Can't go wrong with Bob Marley can ya? Great songwriting, simple yet addictive rhythms, danceable grooves; a lovely packed reggae album that has aged fabulously. A classic for a reason.

Sleep Token - Take Me Back to Eden
18

WHO IS THIS FOR?? I mean I tried coming in with a somewhat positive outlook despite all the hate online but... fuck, it sucks. Why is the production so bassy? Why is the vocalist singing IN CURSIVE IN FUCKING METAL?? Why is the best talent, II [drums], drowned out? Why does the songwriting suck? Why does the heavy shit just sound stockish? Such a questionable release. And now I get the outrage of this thing. Come on.

Sewerslvt - we had good times together, don't forget that

In the nicest way, I don't get it yet.

Agriculture - Agriculture
89

Hot damn, and you'd think Blackgaze wasn't weird and experimental already. Agriculture's debut seems to approach its 31 minutes in a fascinating structure and style that I haven't heard of yet. Heavy diversity of instrumentation and atmosphere that is fitting for the genre. It's not often that one release gets me invested in a band, but this sure as hell has. Seriously awesome album from the Flenser.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
95

Godspeed You! Black Emperor reiterate their mastery of aura, atmosphere and post-rock with Yanqui U.X.O. I was worried that this album would be a major disappointment (the competition is top-mint to be fair), but to me, this was so worth it. Their style of music just makes my face scrunch up or knock my head back as they transcend me to another plane. Even the 20-minute songs fly surprisingly fast as the pacing and writing hit emotions hard. But also that could be me being a GY!BE fanboy so be ... read more

Trivium - Shogun
86

Seriously an underrated metalcore gem. With Trivium, I find some of their material mixed between standout and average metalcore shenanigans. Shogun's first half is full of the most attractive melodies and guitar work I've heard in recent metal. The latter half does fall back into that issue of average metal but everything is still quite consistent. Writing thematics are explored interestingly, focusing on war and violence, Matt's vocals are excellent and the instrumentation is phenomenal. Don't ... read more

Five Finger Death Punch - Got Your Six
37

Honestly thought I would hate/despise this. I've stayed FAR from FFDP due to the stock riffs, tame lyrics and traditional butt-rock themes that make me groan and it has all that. I mean there are some standouts but nothing I would recommend. 40 minutes of nothing really. For me anyways.

Bring Me The Horizon - POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR
80

Some part of my conscious mind doesn't want to enjoy this. Never was into BMTH and thought their sound (like most elitest though I am not) was a bit "too mainstream" and "popish" to fit into the metal genre. However, this EP is actually great. Production sounds awesome, hooks are catchy and could be a fun time for a good portion of people. Those who like the alternative title will have a splendid time.

Charli xcx - BRAT
86

Hell Yeah. No more words needed. Banger town.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II
76

Selected Ambient Works II feels more like an ambient album than the first collection from Aphex Twin with an ambitious 156-minute runtime. This is my second time listening (heard it for the first time last year) and I don't think my opinions changed. Sure, this is a good ambient project, but I think it's still a touch overrated. Signature Aphex Twin sound works but sometimes it doesn't feel "ambient."

Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind
70

I've been a Slipknot fan since I was around 11/12 years old. Seen them twice live too. And I feel this album has a sense of nostalgia for a specific period time in my life, linked to a school trip to see snow for the first time. Few years on, now a "professional music critic" and thought I'd relisten to see how it holds up now that my taste is much broader. Honestly, it's solid for modern Slipknot standards nowadays (remember, there might be some elements of bias and hopefully no ... read more

Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
89

Emotionally heavy, ironically uplifting instrumentation contrasted with lyrics of dread. It's rough reading the things he had gone through throughout his life, including battles with drug addiction and severe depression, and it shows here. From a hindsight perspective, the haunting knowledge that he died less than a month later gives the aura of a man who has completely given up on life and reflects on the absurdity of life and the desired conclusion of his life. The morbid tone of the album, ... read more

Leonard Bernstein - Stravinsky: Le Sacre du Printemps
87

The recording quality does not sound like it was from 1958; it's almost TOO good. I won't say much as it is a cover recording of a composition by Igor Stravinsky. Dynamics are great, tonality is wild and overall this version is constantly interesting. EPIC!

Schammasch - Triangle
62

As a 100-minute Avant-Garde metal triple album, it's ambitious. Although there are times it drags and becomes uninspired, the third act of this album is a massive shift in direction that is unexpected. Yet again, it does underwhelm due to the time it takes to get to the exciting part. It did leave me wanting more over being satisfied.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
100

Always have been sceptical as to why this album out of many essential Jazz albums was as highly appraised. For me, it had no "jazz gimmicks" to hook me in or invest time into Kind of Blue. I was so happy that I finally listened and was proven damn wrong. It's not only excellent in the chemistry of Miles Davis and the notable musicians, but it ignites an emotional connection to music in general. When listening for the first two minutes, I said to myself "Ah. it's just really good ... read more

The Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us Is the Killer
90

WOAH WOAH WOAH! HOLD THE REINS THERE BUDDY! Um... this is mathmatically brutal and diverse. From shifting between softer parts to murderous aggression in microseconds, time signatures that are possibly non-existent and hooks that shouldn't be appealing or make sense whatsoever... I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHIT! LISTEN BITCHES!

Imagine Dragons - Mercury – Act 2
6

So I listened to Mercury Acts 1 & 2 back to back and never realised this was split into two albums on here. Anyways ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Imagine Dragons released an album that would make vanilla ice cream taste like something exotic. Overproduced, commercial glazing rubbish that is as lifeless as a graveyard. I also wrote "Boohoo cry me a river" in my notes... don't know why. I wanted to listen to this double album ironically and I regret it. God, this sucks.

Imagine Dragons - Mercury – Act 1

Genuinely the worst album I've heard. [I listened to Acts 1 & 2 back to back]
