Violet Cold - Empire of Love
71

The most positive Blackgaze album I've heard. Empire of Love is a curveball in the 'traditional' Blackgaze sound with a more light-hearted tone and odd acoustic and midi instrumentations (like a banjo?) In terms of getting into the genre, this would be a great entry point for those who want to explore gradually instead of head first into the pool.

Kooba Tercu - Proto Tekno
46

The production on Proto Tekno doesn't do Kooba Tercu any favours to express the songs clearly, often giving a sense of over-blending that you would zone out to, but not in the intended way. Some decent experimental rock ideas but I found them to be mild or just uninteresting.

Cool fusion of Post-Rock and Midwest Emo that was seemingly unexpected, but rewarding. The flow between tracks is quite good and the production sounds excellent. However, personal biases in taste found the vocalist sort of irritating and became uninterested in the content of the music. Still quite good, and potentially excellent for those who are fans of the Midwest Emo scene.

Kronos Quartet / Pat Metheny - Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint
91

I've seen a lot of people not liking Different Trains and I can sort of understand (Europe - During the War does sort of dip the quality of the piece, and the vocal samples do get irritating) but I think that both compositions are amazing on this double composition album. With the signature sampling that Steve Reich is known for, to one of my favourite guitar pieces/performances in Electric Counterpoint, this album is much higher than I intended to score it but it's much deserved. I could go on ... read more

Insane Clown Posse - The Great Milenko
24

Corny, and potentially outdated, but quite funny at times. Oh, it's bad but damn can't deny having a fair bit of fun.

David Bowie - ★ [Blackstar]
100

Hot take: Blackstar IS David Bowie's not just best album; best creative output. I wasn't listening to Bowie around his death (I was 12 and my favourite band was only Slipknot). However, when in primary school choir, I remember one of the other schools had performed 'Space Oddity' as a tribute and that always stuck with me. Fast forward years later, I started getting invested in Bowie here and there but never touched this album until I started to get into music. The first time I think I heard ... read more

Denzel Curry - TA13OO
82

Never dived into Trap music (I was a bit pretentious in that sense). And it turns out, I'm missing out. Curry's lyrical skills and banging (I mean BANGING) beats are such an enjoyable listen. This goes hard in many diverse ways. If you haven't decided your opinion on Trap music, I think this will sell you over.

The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
84

Ooooo some ambient house music to chill/study/vibe to. The runtime [109 minutes] can be a challenge to get through if you're looking for something exciting, however, I argue that this is quite an easy listen in a good way. Plus it samples Electric Counterpoint, one of my favourite compositions ever on Little Fluffy Clouds. Great!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
86

King Jazzard & The Lazard Wazard go improvisation Jazz-Rock on Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava that centres around one key signature, one tempo, and just jammed out it reportedly for hours. Yeah, this rules. Not surprising for KGLW. Quite relaxing really.

Sanguinarius - Sin Nomine
67

I was hyped for this album. I had this saved for a while and finally wanted to give it a crack. The sound of gothic post-punk provides a cool sound, however, I just lost interest about 3/4 of the way in. Vocals are nice and instrumentation is cool but I just sort of tapped out towards the end. Might need another go at it, but the amount of good songs without much progression was a clock-out.

Sanguisugabogg - Pornographic Seizures
66

Personally don't have much to say. Quick 11 minutes of death metal that flies by with production that is a lil too bassy. That's it. Not great but not bad.

Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
83

A Black Metal album... with COWBELLS?? AW YEAH! A Blaze in the Northern Sky is [ironically] a weird album. Not weird because of the genre but rather it subverts the expectations within the genre. Punk drum beats, clean vocals at times, being able to understand what is being said/played; this non-traditional sound is quite enjoyable. The lo-fi sound wall notorious in Black Metal is still there but its not ear-piercing and actually listenable (to an enjoyable degree mind you). No clue what they ... read more

John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins

Tamest Yoko performance. Seriously, what the fuck is this. I don't think this should be classified as musique concrete at its minimum. WHO WAS THIS FOR?? A ZERO!

I do feel Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends has one main attraction but the rest of the theme park holds its own. The deeper cuts are interesting for Coldplay's discography; a more art-pop feel as opposed to their straight-up pop-rock sounds of before. A lil over-produced at times as well and some songs sound like they changed when it's the length of the tracks, but still an ok album.

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
93

Lamar's double album Mr Morale & The Big Steppers seems to open up insight into his world after releasing groundbreaking albums consecutively. Five years after his previous release, DAMN., Kendrick Lamar displays such diverse tracks and creative approaches that give audiences a new taste of his undeniable talent. I think the track "We Cry Together" is a prominent example of this mature songwriting and performance. It's literally a domestic abuse altercation performed as a hip-hop ... read more

Bark Psychosis - Hex
87

One of the most influential and impactful albums that would popularise the Post-Rock genre after that term was coined by Simon Reynolds upon reviewing Hex in 1994. 30 years on and in an era where Post-Rock is quite popular amongst music fanatics, critics and audiophiles, this Post-Rock album hasn't aged whatsoever, with a sound that hasn't been drained from other bands replicating the aura of Bark Psychosis's debut. A jazzy-dream pop vibe mixed with sustained ambience. Another thing is how ... read more

Osees - Smote Reverser
66

First Thee Oh Sees experience was alright. Nothing musically flashy besides some nice solo and vibey, clean sections. One point; that album cover is one of the best I've ever seen but is also a bit of false advertising for an ok album.

Lou Reed & Metallica - Lulu
1

So. Many. Things. To. Say. But. Don't. Want. To. Talk. About. For. More. Than. A. Minute...

I can describe this as;
- A shit version of Swans
- What I imagine the "comedown" of being on heroin would be like
- Somehow straight-up rejects good music
- The gap between stock instrumentation and rambling vocals (leaving any interest out the fucking window.)
- Too long for its own good (I was zoning out at times and it was STILL going)
- Lars' performance being the most consistent thing on ... read more

Craig Leon - Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1: Nommos/Visiting
59

Interesting concept of exploring "folk music that travels between planets" however, straight up, got lost in interest about halfway through. I wish it was more focused on mixing electronic ambience with acoustic instruments that would give that "intergalactic folk" sound but at face value, it's mild ambience with weird beats.

Daft Punk - Discovery
100

Hmm...could this be one of the greatest French House albums? Maybe. Could this be one of the greatest electronic/sampled-centered albums of the 21st century? Maybe. Could this be one of the best albums ever? Maybe. I feel Daft Punk often is overlooked in popular culture (bold take but just thoughts here). They're known for their stellar dance bangers and hits and just the duo in cool robot masks, but I haven't heard much in the absolute detail each one of their songs represents. Discovery is ... read more
