Logic - College Park
78

Logic returned earlier this year with his ninth studio album 'College Park' which is also his first album as a solo artist since the Def Jam contract that he had for 10 years. This is Logic doing his own thing, he's happier, he's himself, and you can definitely tell how much more self confidence he has now that he's moving on a more independent basis.

'No Pressure' was supposed to be Logic's final album before a supposed retirement, but I guess once you enter this life, you get itchy fingers ... read more

A$AP Twelvyy - Kid$ Gotta Eat
67

This is my first introduction to A$AP Twelvyy, and 'Kids Gotta Eat' is a decent album to start off with! Saw someone talking about this one on Twitter (why is it X now lol), and thought I should definitely check it out.

Twelvyy has some good flows, and for the most part the beat and sample selection is pretty decent too. Nothing too crazy, and I wouldn't have a lot of these songs on repeat, but overall it's not bad. Twelvyy also reminds me a little bit of Westside Gunn and Benny The Butcher ... read more

Marlon Craft - HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE, VOL. 2
79

Don't have too much to say on this one so I'll keep it short and sweet :)

Marlon Craft has been on the rise for the last few years, known for his usage of dark gritty boom bap Hip-Hop beats that are reminiscent of Mobb Deep's 'Shook Ones', especially in the track 'Hans Zimmer' on his last album. Then on the otherhand using a more dreamlike and melodic sort of sound, that in some ways has a similar feel to Brother Ali in terms of the melodic storytelling. Marlon continues to do well in ... read more

Killer Mike - MICHAEL
73

Don't get me wrong, Killer Mike is one of the best Hip-Hop lyricists of all time. Up with the likes of Andre 3000, Black Thought, Eminem and countless others who I could name as the top of all time, but the self titled 'MICHAEL' album just didn't completely do it for me this time around, although I did enjoy a fair few songs on here.

I think there's some incredible content with rich lyricism, great flows and cadences and I could go on. But there's something about how the album was presented ... read more

redveil - playing w/ fire
64

redveil is a very fresh and exciting young Hip-Hop artist with a lot to offer, he also brings a lot of charisma, style and lyrical content to the table. I really enjoyed his last album, but did I enjoy this little EP to tide us over until his next project?

The answer is, sort of. I feel that redveil took the kind of tracks that really worked on 'learn 2 swim', and brought those kind of vibes to this EP 'playing w/ fire'. I really like the bold choices redveil makes when he's really going for ... read more

Dominic Fike - Sunburn
58

Dominic Fike is a really great artist when it comes to finding melodies that can become earworms, as well as being accessible to a wide range of people. His usual style of alt Indie Pop/Rock is quite nice to listen to, though sometimes his lyrics aren't the best and he can come across a little too on the nose at times.

'Sunburn' follows the same formula, where Dominic is good at finding good melody pockets, but often the album conceptually falls flat and feels like EP or mixtape material, ... read more

Maeta - When I Hear Your Name
57

Maeta is an artist who definitely knows her style, and she executes it in a way that's mostly great and catchy.

'When I Hear Your Name' is an R&B album with Funk and Rock influence that mostly does well. Maeta has quite a rich and light tone to her voice, which makes her very easy on the ear and enjoyable to listen to. Some of the songs fall a bit flat, and most of the songs just sound like decent R&B, which just lacks experimentation or risk. The 'Cool Cat' Queen cover I felt was a ... read more

Daniel Caesar - NEVER ENOUGH
67

Daniel Caesar despite my lower review is a beautifully talented singer, who deserves the best success.

I just couldn't personally get into this album, I love slow and laid back vibes as much as the next person, but I personally just felt as though everything was just a bit too slow for my personal taste, but please don't confuse that with me saying it's bad because it's not. Objectively, from an artistic standpoint, the album is at least a 7 or 8/10, but I just didn't personally fully enjoy ... read more

Young Thug - BUSINESS IS BUSINESS
60

A decent album from Young Thug! (I prefer the Metro Boomin order though as opposed to the regular running order)

I do have to give my full praise and respect to Metro Boomin' though. Hot off the success of 'HEROES & VILLAINS' at the back end of 2022, he's been on an absolute roll recently. Producing for Young Thug, Across The Spider-Verse and he's already in the midst of creating collaboration albums with both Future and JID. The man just doesn't sleep, and he efficiently creates clean, ... read more

IDK - F65
67

Not IDK's best work, although it has an eclectic mix of songs that will appeal to different people for different reasons.

Included in this album is IDK's usual turn up kind of music, as well as his more Jazz and Funk inspired Hip-Hop tracks. However IDK really takes a few risks with the sound and direction of the project. Some of those choices pay off, whereas others leave a lot to be desired. One thing IDK doesn't lose a sense of though is his style, he remains a very charismatic, self ... read more

Lil Uzi Vert - Pink Tape
66

An experimental effort from Lil Uzi Vert

This is a really high energy, fast paced and explosive performance from Lil Uzi Vert. I personally am not a massive fan of their style, but I do appreciate how they're able to create a certain vibe and energy, especially among his audience and live performances. They have a really charismatic character, and that definitely comes across in their tracks. However the sound of it just isn't for me, and I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe if I saw a live ... read more

Gunna - a Gift & a Curse
68

This was actually a decent effort from Gunna!

I went into this album expecting not to like much of it, but by the end I actually had quite a few tracks in my playlist that I'm still listening to. It's obviously not the best thing you'll ever hear, but there's some really good listens which seperate Gunna from everyone else and give him a more vulnerable nature which he hasn't previously shown. Bragadocius flows are good, but sometimes I really want to get to know an artist and in this album, ... read more

Various Artists - Barbie The Album
63

This album soundtrack definitely accomplishes what it sets out to do.

I listened to this soundtrack after I went to see the movie and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the music accompanies the scenes and actually informs the decisions and movement of the characters at points. This was most noticeable in Lizzo's starting track 'Pink', and Tame Impala's 'Journey To The Real World'. The soundtrack builds an atmosphere and matches the theme of Barbie very well, although on the other hand ... read more

Nix Northwest - Xin's Disappearance
59

A fun vibey album!

Nix is an interesting artist that mixes a Funk and Jazz sound with Hip-Hop, definitely representing the UK in a positive way. I prefer his previous work, but this album isn't at all bad. Everything kind of blended together for me, but there were some really solid standouts. 'One Way Ticket', 'Sun In My Eyes', 'Rearview Mirror', 'You Ain't Got A Chance Boy' and 'Problems' to name a few.

I want to see more from Nix, he's a great artist but tends to play it safe. With that ... read more

Don Toliver - Love Sick
55

Don Toliver is a very talented artist, but continues to prove that his collaborative efforts and features are better than his solo work.

This album isn't as bad as some people are making out. I enjoyed quite a few aspects of this album, mainly the production and how Don glides over the beats, they sound really woozy and vibey for the most part. The R&B influence is very clear in Don's style, though he could do better and give a little more energy to some of the tracks. I feel Don's ... read more

Gorillaz - Cracker Island
45

Make no mistake, Gorillaz will always be iconic and legends within the music industry, as they have been for years. I just think their recent releases unfortunately leave a lot to be desired.

I've tried to get into 'Cracker Island' a few times, I've enjoyed the odd track or two here and there, but as for a whole album it didn't hit me in the way I'd have liked it to. I also remember the marketing for this album feeling really dragged out. They released at least half of the album in singles, ... read more

Various Artists - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Soundtrack From & Inspired by the Motion Picture)
80

Listening to this back after seeing Across The Spider-Verse, Metro Boomin' objectively made a better soundtrack when it comes to being cohesive with the story, and feel consistent in its tone and feel all the way through the album.

However, the Into The Spider-Verse soundtrack definitely has the more iconic tracks that have stood the test of time and left an impact. Songs like 'What's Up Danger?' and 'Sunflower' have really stuck around, however when it comes to relistening to the whole ... read more

Switchfoot - Meant To Live (Jon Bellion Version)
90

Beautiful track! Absolutely love the strings arrangement and how mellow it feels, matched with Jon Bellion's lovely vocals.

This is a more stripped and theatrical take on Switchfoot's 'Meant To Live' and sounds more like an acoustic with orchestral strings, made to be really sung, as opposed to the rock feel of the original. I think this is a really respectful and honourable cover by Jon, doing his own thing without stepping too much on the original artist's toes, or changing it in a way that ... read more

Travis Scott, Bad Bunny & The Weeknd - K-POP
55

It's just a strange tone setter for Utopia as a project.

Travis being radio silent other than billboards, advertising and merch, to then release a single for Utopia a week prior to it's full release date, It's very confusing to use a song that sets the tone of it being more a pop/party album in feel. Not that it's objectively a bad song, just questionable as a tone setter. Not a good way to get the die hard fans who have been waiting intrigued, but just a generic sounding track that sounds ... read more

Metro Boomin - METRO BOOMIN PRESENTS SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (SOUNDTRACK FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE)
82

Having recently listened to Metro Boomin's project 'HEROES & VILLAINS', I was highly anticipating Metro's work going into this, and excited for the features he'd use, and man did it exceed my expectations!

Starting with the production. Everything feels fleshed out, there's a lot of layers to the production and it sounds really pleasing to the ear in every track. It's all silky smooth and nothing sounds weirdly mixed or out of place, that definitely earns a good few points for me! ... read more

"Agreed, Aminé is just kind of saying a whole lot of bragadocious nothing. Plus him bragging about being good at sex every track? I'm like ok and? The content and style just isn't there for me. I'm sad cause I wanted to love it as well!"
On Shaze1's review of KAYTRAMINÉ - KAYTRAMINÉ
"The thing is, I'm one of those people who really wanted to like it. It just sucks that my expectations weren't met in the ways I wanted. Mostly due to Aminé and his performance. I can understand why people would like it, but it fell flat mostly due to his performance unfortunately"

"If you like this, check out their album Thunder, Lightning, Strike which was arguably their most successful album! Their happy sound is infectious, reminds me a bit of Kero Kero Bonito too."
On Nas - King's Disease III
"@LesDiamonds . I would agree with you if my review was negative, but my entire review was singing the albums praises and my opinion is still the same of the album now. The Nas and Hit Boy are amazing at creating together and they always will be, I feel no pressure to get reviews out quickly. I will always be honest in the moment of my feelings towards something"
On CubeHead07's review of BROCKHAMPTON - TM
"I think it was moreso due to The Family being mainly just a Kevin Abstract album, they probably just had Kevin do 30 odd minutes to fulfill their contract, then have all the members for one last album on their own terms. Although one sounds better, I do agree we needed to hear all the members, even if at this point they're done and want to move on. Shame that they're not at their best though and don't have as much connection with each other as they used to."
On Nas - King's Disease III
"Completely agree @Kamelody . You don't get a lot like this nowadays, especially as often as Nas is doing it. He's a pure hard worker and a treasure to the Hip-Hop genre."
On MattsReviews's review of Joji - SMITHEREENS
"Great review @Matt I wish I could type for that long lol, I have to keep mine sort of compact cause I lose the will to live and start going on tangents. Joji is great but can definitely do better! This album proves that he's capable of amazing stuff"
On ka1's review of NxWorries - Where I Go
"I don't see a need to compare really, if it's burning you that badly to pretend Silk Sonic are better, then fair enough. But personally I think both Bruno and Knxwledge are very talented producer/musicians that offer something different, whilst also staying authentic to the Soul/Hip-Hop sound. They make music for the sake of passion of music and don't seem to care about the competition. Both have live instrumentation and heart which is what music is about, either way... if Silk Sonic or NxWorries announced another album tomorrow, I'd be just as happy with either drop"
On CamLikesMusic's review of Cardi B, Kanye West & Lil Durk - Hot Shit
"Exactly my thoughts, Ye especially should be showing people up on their tracks but they left him til last cause it seems like a last minute verse. At least he wasnt mumbling and finished it this time 💀"
On Case's review of Beyoncé - BREAK MY SOUL
"Completely agree with the generic sound, it's like they've all heard a 90's House track and instead of adding their own modern spin on it, they're just recreating it. Modern radios will eat this up all summer though for sure. I really want better for these artists, it seems House is going to be made popular again by Drake and Beyoncé, but I'm hoping they do more with the sound instead of this."

On Little Simz - I Love You, I Hate You
"The beat just gives me a grime/drill/trap vibe and I've just never been into that kind of style, I never said the song IS drill, just that I don't really like that kind of sound personally. Her delivery is strong, just the production vibe isn't my personal preference."
