experimentation is crucial to the lasting power of every band and every risk taken on this record pays off. the tracks that sound nothing like Idles are rich with texture, atonality, and just enough melody to bring you back for more. lacking the energy of their stellar debut ep but bearing every jagged edge. "group disease" is a stark and dreary record that slowly pulls the listener into it's enticingly murky atmosphere.
was initially thrown off by the drastic change in lyrical and musical tone. trusting in one of my favorite bands, i gave this many listens. the shock quickly receded, allowing me to enjoy one of the year's best releases.

growing up my sister and i would buy the edited versions of Kanye records so our religious parents wouldn't get upset by us blasting his music on the way to school. we showed mom and dad "jesus walks" to convince them he made "christian music." now, for my needs, a clean kanye album with religious themes round every corner is about twenty years too late.
