Full disclaimer: I have not listened to every album ever made.
But if there is a better album than this out there I'd be absolutely shocked.
This is on par with Aligator and Boxer as The Nationals best work and I'll die on that hill.
(Rope) Away is absolutely exceptional here. The rest I can dig alright but as is often the case with this band I just never need to hear a second of this again. Guess I really am stuck in the 80s and 90s with Swans. Since Soudtracks I've kinda resigned myself to just saying "yeah I see the appeal here, but it just ain't for me." And that just sucks man.. always feels like everyone else is having a party (or religious sermon?) And I'm just not invited. Ah well you crazy ... read more
Man. I wanted to love this thing, it has so many beautiful moments on it as is typical of a Sweet Trip project. But no, Robbie just had to go and ruin it by being a terrible person and now Sweet Trip joins the pantheon of great bands that make me feel wrong for loving. I really really wish I still didn't know why.
The debut of one of the most, if not THE most underrated bands of the century thus far.
When I'm writing this June is not finally here, but who cares I wanna talk about it. This is one of the warmest and most joyful records in the genre of math rock. It also features some of the finest drumming I've ever heard outside of jazz. Ordinarily one discuses Ian Williams' guitar wizardry when it comes to anything Don Cab and of course he's in some of his finest form here. But man that drumming on the opening track just sets the stage for what to expect from this ... read more
Player's Anthem was so damn big that it somehow eclipses a whole double album from the south's second finest duo. Which is a shame for two reasons, for one, this album is incredibly underrated, and of course this would be the last time we would hear Pimp C alive which man... That just sucks ya know?
If my fiancé isn't walking down the aisle to this, I'm leaving her at the alter.
If not for this, Outkast would probably have had the most spotless career in hip-hop history. But whatever, could have been worse. Plus it being a soundtrack kind of allows me to disassociate it from the rest of their discography. I know that's not fair but I'd rather do that and pretend that Outkast had a flawless run instead so.
Nah this album was made by wizards or time travelers or something. I mean how the hell do you put this monster together in 1968? Who allowed this?
I have two wolves inside me. One that says I have listened to better albums in my life and the other says man, forget all that!
What album has been with you the longest?
What album do you always come back and never get tired of?
What album reminds you of your most cherished memories?
What album did you listen to every night before you went to sleep in high school?
What album, as corny as it sounds, do you feel like is a companion and a friend?
What album has literally everything you love ... read more
No reviews on The Fun Years? Alright for what it's worth I'll give my two cents here I guess. This is one of my favorite drone/ambient albums. It's slow, meticulous and comforting. I have fond vivid memories of walking to my first girlfriend's place in a blizzard when I was like 17. A certified winter time classic.
One day I will play this for my kids and tell them that this was The Joshua Tree.
"Anything" sounds divine, like I'm crying on my way to heaven. Seriously though, I struggle to find s songwriter alive of this caliber. She just keeps making the case for being amongst the greatest lyricists of all time.
