The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
80

Undeniably a classic album with some standout and decade defining tracks and it comes together as an album quite well, I think my problem with this and most of the Beatles I’ve heard up until this point is that there are always a couple of tracks that standout as particularly weak or semi failed moments. Good Morning Good Morning always stands out like a sore thumb on this album and feels like it has little no value as a whole. Fixing A whole and When I’m Sixty four also feel like ... read more

Bon Iver - 22, A Million
85

I think I have a strong soft spot for this folktronica blend of really icy and glitchy electronic music mixed with beautiful folk instrumentation and vocals,. This reminds me a lot James Blake’s early material found on his self titled album as well as Overgrown which in turn was inspired by Justin Vernon’s work on Blood Bank. I think Bon Iver really nails that sound on here to great effect.
To start off with the tracklist on this album is amazing. The eerie opening track 22 makes ... read more

Destroyer - Dan's Boogie

As someone who is a bit of a destroyer super fan with Kaputt being one of my favourite albums of all time, as well as loving Poison Season, Rubies and Your Blues and even Have We Met. This was so incredibly disappointing, feeling so incredibly scant on material. The highlights on this album really are the singles Hydroplanning off the Edge of the World and Bologna really do feel the only significant highlights. Cataract Time feels like one of the more pleasant phone alarm settings, also for an ... read more

Björk - Biophilia
73

This is Bjork’s 2011 album Biophillia, coming after arguably her most divisive album with Volta and kicking off her the music she would make in the 2010s. This is a very interesting released, featuring a wide mix of electronic music, featuring very loud and in your face glitchy tracks on the album like on the track Mutual Core and more ambient and low key songs like Dark Matter.
The tracklist on this album is a very interesting set of songs. The first song Moon is one I really enjoy, ... read more

The Good, the Bad & the Queen - Merrie Land

A super group comprising of the vocal talents of Damon Albarn. As well Paul Simonom on bass, Simon Tong on guitar, as well as as Tony Allen on drums. With the line up being so incredibly stacked, I found this to be incredibly disappointing. I don’t mean to sound dismissive but I think this may be one of the more forgettable albums I’ve ever heard, it feels competently made but incredibly risk averse. It has a great sense of British identity to it which is interesting but not the ... read more

Just a remarkably consistent 70s soul album with great vocals from Terry throughout and beautiful lush instrumentation. Track one may be my favourite, it feels so dreamy and spacey somehow and feels like a beautiful journey. But there is not bad song on here. I have minor complaints, I wish it came together a bit more as an album and somehow I wish it were a bit longer even though it’s not a short album however still a great and essential listen

of Montreal - UR FUN
60

An album I find myself coming back to more than expected, a very on the nose 80s throwback from Of Montreal, I really enjoy a lot of the first half album and could not care less about the second. Songs like Peace to All Freaks, Polyaneurism, Getting God’s attention and Gypsy that Remains all feel like strong highlights, especially the third track however after the first half. I’m either relatively indifferent or dislike every song

Xiu Xiu - Xiu Mutha Fuckin' Xiu: Vol. 1
80

I’ve always rather liked Xiu Xiu l, I remember hearing Knife play for the first time when I was in university and it felt like it just hit something within me that I’m not even sure if I was conscious of the fact that I desired. Ever since then I’ve explored the band and quite enjoyed some of their albums however I very far from the most well versed in the Xiu Xiu discography. Therefore I thought I would check out this covers album as to delver further into the world of Xiu ... read more

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Firstborn Is Dead
70

Nick Cave and the gang carries on chasing the sound that was found on the debut From Her To Eternity, I would argue to a fault being almost a replica with nothing new to be found . This isn’t to say it’s a bad album, on the contrary I quite like it, and I think I get more of a kick out of early Nick Cave than most. The intro track Tupelo is a great song and black Crow King is another song I quite like but overall I just prefer the songs on From Her to Eternity and with the albums ... read more

Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
85

I don’t see why this album hasn’t more respect to its name especially with the 80s cultural synth pop come back that we’ve been experiencing over the last decade or so. This album is endlessly catchy with not a single bad song on the album, with great vocals Marc Almond from start to finish mixed with a very camp and over the top delivery as well as a fetish aesthetic that really adds to the album. Overall a great album and a must listen

LAUSSE THE CAT - The Girl, the Cat and the Tree
78

I think a very strong precursor to what Lausse would perfect on the upcoming album The Mocking Stars. This is still a very strong ep with some fantastic tracks on it including Motor City and Belle Boutellie. I also liked the way that this tackles the very emotional and hard going topic of alcoholism. I think this lacks the expansiveness that The Mocking Stars will later go on to display, I think A cat’s Demise sticks out for all the wrong reasons. This is still a great display of ... read more

Portishead - Dummy
82

A very strong album that was a pioneer in the sound of trip hop at the time. Remarkably consistent, not a single skip on the album however I do think I prefer the first half of the album. Beth Gibbons voice has this haunting ethereal quality that makes the slowed down electronic instrumentation really hypnotic to listen through.
Fav tracks, Mysterons, Sout Time, Strangers, It Could Be Sweet, Wandering Star, Biscuit

Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
93

Going into this relatively blind, just knowing that this was a soul album and pretty well respected, I had my socks completely blown off by the sheer scale of the epic nature on display on this album, almost every being a very
Lengthy soul song with frequent experimentation throughout.
The production and overall sound on this album is something to be greatly admired as well just enjoyed. This album’s is more experimental and daring than I was expecting, the first song I believe uses some ... read more

Black Thought & Danger Mouse - Cheat Codes
80

Danger Mouse’s really kills it by displaying his production chops on this album . The opener Sometimes sounds so incredibly lush and rich with beautiful instrumentals. Other standout’s from a production standpoint I thought included the title track Cheat Codes, especially the song Because, Aquamarine and Belize.
Black Thought also kills it with his rapping performances on the album. Having never heard a roots album before or any other solo material, I was very happy however with ... read more

Bloc Party - HYMNS
37

I think this is the worse Bloc Party overall and a baffling career turn. The context behind this album as I understand is due to internal tension the rhythm section of the band decided to quit with Matt Tong, the drummer and bassist Gordon Moakes departing before the band’s recording of this album began. This album therefore takes a departure the more rocky sound of the previous albums and becomes more of synth pop album with more personal lyrics depicting themes of religion which has ... read more

Bloc Party - Four
50

I think this might be the most forgettable and boring bloc Party album even if it’s not the worst. The album sees the band chasing previous highs by going for the same sound that made them exploded onto the indie scene albeit with a slightly more aggressive and noisy sound which I just don’t think works for the youthful sound the a band is known for. I also just don’t think the catchyness and great song structures that where to be found on those early albums is here either, it ... read more

Bloc Party - Intimacy
68

I think this album is a very hard album to rate and review because on one hand I think a lot of tracks on this album are either good or great and I think this was a really bold new direction for Bloc party taking the little hints of electronic experimentation you began to see on the previous A Weekend In the City. The problem I think is that the actual sequencing of the album I think is arguably the worst of the entire discography, the order of the songs don’t seem to fit together at ... read more

Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
85

I know many will disagree but to my personal taste I think this will always be the definitive Bloc Party album to me. I think they took what worked with the debut, fleshed out the ideas presented on that and I think the song writer significantly improved on this album tackling more interesting topics such as Racism, life as a young adult in the city and sexuality.
Firstly I want to say I think the track list on this album is very tight, dispelling of the filler that I think hampered the ... read more

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
78

The debut from Block party I believe has gone down as a post punk revival and indie rock classics from the 2000s and I think for good reason too, this is definitely one of the most youthful and energetic rock records you could hear coming out in the early to mid 2000s, filled to the brim with some incredibly fast playing rock songs like helicopter and Like Eating Glass . I do believe in retrospect it’s not a perfect album, I think it has a lot of filler tracks in the album list and to my ... read more

LAUSSE THE CAT - The Mocking Stars
94

This is just a tremendous jazz rap album from start to finish, super relaxed and lo fi clocking in for just over an hour I found it never got old and was just endlessly enjoyable, this is a true highlight in the uk rap scene.
The production on this album is incredible and arguably the album’s most impressive part, with jazz instrumentation that complements the performances incredibly well, this can be seen as early as the first song Blue Bossa with its incredible throughout the song. ... read more
