Silver Jews - The Natural Bridge
70

Being a big Pavement fan, going into this I thought this was going to be a slam dunk, with Pavement personal working on the previous Silver Jews album and this following in much of the same slacker rock and country genre as Pavement I was hoping to get really enjoy this album and while I did come out really enjoying some of the songs, I don’t think I got everything I wanted out of this album.
I think my first problem was the album felt a bit one note and it feels like it walks to the ... read more

The Beach Boys - Surf's Up
90

This is the first Beach Boys album I have ever listened to in full and I have to say I came out of this really impressed . The sound of this album is a lot more psychedelic and moodier than what I expected after hearing the big Beach Boys singles however it made for a really unique and interesting style for the album and suited the more politically conscious themes of the album
Track for track this album is really strong, the opener Don’t Go Near the Water is an amazing album intro ... read more

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World
80

The first David Bowie album a lot of his fans would consider to be good. I’ve always really loved this album, I think it stands out amongst his discography as being one of his heavier rock albums which is really commendable as Black Sabbath and the metal scene were establishing the roots the same year, it feels like Bowie really had his finger on the pulse of what was happening on here.
Firstly the track list on this album is really strong, the title track I think is what a lot of people ... read more

Arcade Fire - Everything Now
35

I think the common consensus is this was a continuation of a downward trajectory that was started with the Reflektor album before this. Most people arguing that Reflektor was a bit of a dip in quality following Arcade Fire’s first three albums and then this was a further dip in quality following that. Whilst I think that’s an understandable position to hold I think this album just jumps off a cliff so hard in terms of quality that it felt pretty distinct at this point in time, the ... read more

Madonna - Ray of Light
75

The seventh studio album by Madonna and her third into her 90s period at this point, kicking off her nineties period with the great album Erotica which was a real dialling up of the shock material Madonna is known for whilst mixing her pop stylings with a more electronic 90s production style. The follow up to this was Bedtime Stories which felt almost like a scaling back of erotica in many ways, reducing the sexual imagery and lyrics quite a bit, also cutting back the length of the album ... read more

Gorillaz - The Now Now
60

I think The Now Now comes at an interesting point in G history, the follow up to the first and only real album disappointing at the time, Humanz, an album that was lambasted for having too many features on it at the time, I think even as a teenager at the time I was put off from listening to this album because of the context behind it, it does feel very much like an apology for the previous album, drastically pulling back the feature list for this one as to only have features on two of the ... read more

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - From Her to Eternity
78

This is the first Nick Cave album he made with the Bad Seeds after the dissolution of his former band The Birthday Party. Nick Cave is an album I’ve been wanting to review for a while, I have some old ratings of some of his other work but Nick Cave is an artist who’s really grown on me in the last year or so, to the point where i really enjoy a lot of his albums now and I think this debut is an underrated gem among his very large catalogue.
To start off the sound of this album I ... read more

The Sound - Jeopardy
75

A solid post punk album while not reinventing the wheel and I don’t think it would necessarily convert someone who isn’t a post punk fan, for those who are those is just an incredibly solid set of tracks from start to finish in the genre.
Missiles I think is the real standout on the album with great performances from the band and a really intense vocal performance to match the song. Other standout songs include desire, Heartland and I can’t escape myself

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
85

Arcade fire had the very undesirable task of following up arguably the defining indie rock album of the 2000s after they released their debut Funeral in 2004.The follow up they came up with is a more lyrically direct album than the predecessor, to me this feels a very post 9/11 album with lyrics focusing on war and conflict with the most obvious ones being Windowsill and Intervention. Religion being another key lyrical theme on the album such as on the songs Neon Bible, Antichrist Television ... read more

Madonna - Bedtime Stories
60

This feels like a skittish jump away from the sensual and drum n bass, almost trip hop production choices that were made on erotica into a more conventional R & B stylistic choice and whilst on paper doesn’t necessarily sound like a bad move especially for me personally as whilst I did love Erotica I also do really love R & B. The album suffers as a result for this, seeming a lot more safe than the previous record as well as not having the catchy and stand out tracks of that ... read more

Nicole Dollanganger - Natural Born Losers
80

I quite enjoyed this album, it’s a singer songwriter album with an ethereal and haunting quality which is bought out by the instrumentation as it goes along. Dollanganger has a the prefect voice to suit this as well; there is a delicacy to her voice that really suits the other worldy quality of the music.
The album has a very slow pace to it throughout which really worked for me it never felt like it was rushing to get to the finish line which meant that it felt like each song had time to ... read more

Soda Stereo - Soda Stereo
70

I honestly enjoyed this more than I expected to going in, previously I’ve found that a lot of new wave albums of the eights tend to have amazing singles and then the rest of the songs on the album really pale in comparison however I have to say this is just a really consistent and fun new wave album through and through
The first five of so songs on the album are probably my favourite songs on the album, very fun and catchy with a new wave and almost ska tinged nature thrown in as well. ... read more

Arcade Fire - Funeral
100

Arcade Fire are in a bit of a public relations crisis at the moment. I believe this is due to a number of reasons, the most obvious being the unsavoury allegations that came against frontman Win Butler shortly after the release of the album We. The sharp decline in quality also being another factor, it feels like the bands album quality took an nose dive off a cliff after the Reflektor album starting with Everything Now, I think on one hand this has led to people re evaluating the albums ... read more

FEET - Make It Up
60

Not a terrible indie rock, album i actually quite like the first few tracks but after that it becomes the most forgettable listening experience I’ve had in a while except for the penultimate song on the wire which i did quite enjoy
Overall would not recommend a listen unless you are a die hard indie rock fan

Big Thief - Double Infinity
60

I came into this album with relatively high expectations, I really enjoyed Big Thief previous album before this one being an amazing journey of a folk album and decently enjoying the singles I heard before going into this so overall I was expecting to enjoy this album quite a bit and whilst I did come out with an overall mildly positive experience, I have to say I did feel ever so slightly disappointed.
If we were to start with the positives I do quite enjoy the first half of the album, the ... read more

Madonna - Erotica
85

Madonna’s fifth studio album and her first of the nineties, it marks a notable shift in sound and maybe the most drastic of her career up to this point. Whilst still being a pop album at it’s heart, this album has big trip hop and hip hop leanings as well as drum and bass stylings which make for the most unique and diverse sounding album in her career, it is my opinion that this results in the the most interesting sounding so far.
The first track on the album erotica is a very ... read more

Space - Magic Fly
68

This album feels like a bit of an oddity in itself, a mostly instrumental synth album with the first five tracks feeling like a consistent continuation of each other whcih are all enjoyable synth songs which try and capture a spacey feel with standouts including the opener fasten your seat belt and the title track Magic Fly. There does feel like a significant lack of. Variation on the track list and some of the tracks do feel like quite remedially synth songs which try especially the track ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - Live Laugh Love
75

I think Earl sweatshirt has certainly found his lane at this point so if you have ever heard an Earl project at this point you know what you’re getting yourself in for, production that uses a short sample and repeats it throughout the song to create a unique atmosphere which somehow creates a reflective and dreamy feeling on most songs. This album incorporates this pretty well with most samples being very well done like on the songs Forge, Infatuation, Crisco, Heavy metal and Exhaust ... read more

Madonna - Like a Prayer
74

A definite improvement upon True Blue in my opinion. This feels a bit of change in direction for Madonna whilst still maintaining a pretty varied track list like the last album, for the most part this it’s a lot slower and more downtempo than the previous set of albums with lyrics dealing with more serious topics like marriages falling apart and domestic abuse on the song Til Death Do Us Part and also parental issues on the song Oh Father.
Overall the track list on this album is pretty ... read more

Lemon Demon - Spirit Phone
80

This Is a 80s inspires synth pop album with the theming of old horror cliches throughout with references to the occult, aliens and urban legends scattered throughout. It encompasses the theatrical and camp nature of a mid 2000s Of Montreal with the synth soundscape of a Gary Numan 80s album and I love every minute of it with this being one of the most just pure fun albums
The first thing to note about this album is the in your face nature of it, the way Neil sings on this album almost reminds ... read more
