Björk - Debut
90

Bjork’s aptly named debut album coming after her work with the Sugarcubes I think hits it right out of the park on the first attempt. Featuring a strong influence of House, art pop and Dance Music, it’s tracklist is incredibly consistent
The first few tracks on the album Human Behaviour, Crying and Venus As A Boy are all some of the best songs on the album. Human Behaviour I think demonstrates Bjork’s vocal talents incredibly well and immediately show off her creative nature. ... read more

Silver Jews - American Water
70

I really love Pavement and you think Silver Jews would be up my alley because of it however this is the second album I have heard by them and this is sadly not translating to be true. Il keep this brief as I don’t want to repeat myself after my Natural Bridge review however I think my problem with this album is that whilst it has some enjoyable songs, it seems to never leave its lane or experiment enough. So whilst I canes out of both the album enjoying them by the end it always feels ... read more

Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA
75

The first album by Rina Sawayama I have ever heard and her debut after a pretty well received ep. It’s an alternative pop album fearing a bit more aggressive production at times with a more hard rock edge than you would traditionally expect to find in this genre.
The tracklist is pretty strong overall but I think it falls down in the final quarter and lets the album down a little bit overall because of it. The first few songs in the tracklist are all excellent Dynasty kicks off the album ... read more

PJ Harvey - Dry
83

The first PJ Harvey album that was released and since Pj Harvey’s discography as a whole is a blind spot in my understanding of music, I thought the best place to start would be chronologically with the debut and I was incredibly impressed as a whole with this outing
Sonically this album sounds like how you would expect a 90s alternative album to sound like for the most part, very grungy with lots of guitars, fast paced and pretty aggressive vocals from Pj Harvey. This album however has ... read more

Nujabes - Modal Soul
95

This is definitely one of my favourite hip hop albums of all time. Elite production through Nujabes throughout with beautiful jazz music throughout the entirety of the album, great samples and just maintains a very relaxing and cohesive sounds even though he pulls from a lot of different genres from hip hop to jazz to electronic music.
The tracklist itself is so incredibly consistent. The album immediately hits you off with one of the best songs on the album, Feather, which immediately starts ... read more

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
83

The first and only Black Sabbath album I’ve ever heard and I think this was the perfect place to start, it feels like a great short introduction to the band, condensing what the band is known for to the bare essentials of what you would expect from Black Sabbath.
The production on this album is really great with creepy production throughout, being on display the second you turn the album on with the first track Black Sabbath with the creepy bell chimes and rain dripping down, before then ... read more

Caroline Polachek - Pang
88

The debut from Caroline Polacheck, listening to this for the first time after hearing the album that follows this up Desire, I want To Turn into You I was a bit apprehensive that this album would feel like much of the same in retrospect just a bit weaker and I’m happy to say that this was not the case at all, I thoroughly enjoyed this and if anything this has shown me that I need to listen to the even earlier work with Chairlift.
This sounds very similiar to Desire with Very future ... read more

James Blake - Friends That Break Your Heart
83

This is the first James Blake album I ever heard and I still think it’s great, I think maybe his most versatile album, this is almost a singer song writer albums at times which Blake had done songs in that genre before but it feels the most blatant and prevalent on this album, as well as using the sad electronic music his known for, as well as utilising bunch of hip hop and R&b features on this with JID and SZA making appearances to great effect
The tracklist on this album is very ... read more

James Blake - Overgrown
83

The sophomore album from James Blake sees him continuing where he left off from the first one with the sad electronic music which incorporates R & B. I’m not the most familiar with Blake’s music, I have heard Friends that Break Your Heart a lot of times and I really enjoy that album and I have heard the debut and enjoyed that before but apart from those two I had never heard the rest of his discography so I decided to give this a listen
The sound and production of a James Blake ... read more

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
40

This is a prog rock album, By Porcupine Tree who whilst not being the most famous rock band in the world are certainly well respected in the more clued in music fan scene and I have to say this did not click for me at all.
I think the first thing that I did not enjoy was the lyrics, I did not find the concept of this album being set through the eyes of a disenfranchised youth all that compelling, the lyrics felt very repetitive throughout the album and made it sound a bit more repetitive than I ... read more

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
90

The beach boys continue to deeply impress on the second album I have heard by them now. This is obviously the most iconic, hugely influential Beach boys album, engaging in their trademark baroque and psychedelic pop mixed with their incredible harmonies throughout, all this combines to make a really great and incredible sound.
The first thing I’m starting to realise with the Beach Boys is how much I truly love the production on each of their albums, for an album that came out in 66 this ... read more

The Divine Comedy - A Short Album About Love
75

I decided to give this a listen after hearing that it’s in the book 1001 albums you need to hear before you die, a bit of a confusing addition to that list not being a big seller or having super big influence on music, as well as not being particularly popular on the underground scene within music at the time. With that being said I still came out of this album enjoying it quite a bit. The album is pretty sonically un diverse, finding a chamber pop sound and sticking to this for pretty ... read more

Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon
84

The follow up her last album clouds, I think this is another example of an album which is just a mild improvement over the former in every way, it maintains that singer songwriter vibes from the last one but adds more instrumentation across the track list. The track list as a whole is also a little tighter this time around with stronger tracks throughout and less weak songs. Overall strongly enjoyed and would highly recommend a listen
Fav tracks- Morning Morgantown, For Free, Conversation, ... read more

Joni Mitchell - Clouds
80

The sophomore Joni Mitchell album and the first and only Joni album I have heard so far, this was a great introduction, a very simple singer song writer album which whilst not utilising a lot of different genres, it does do folk in a very effective way,
The track-list for the album is incredibly consistent, every song is pretty great and never handing any low points. The first half of the album stars lots with the song Tin Angel I think really displays Joni Mitchell’s vocal talents, ... read more

Soda Stereo - Nada Personal
77

The band’s second album follows in the same direction as the first album, with really fun new wave and synth pop production being present throughout the entirety of the first album, since This is so similar to the debut, I won’t go in depth but I will say I do think there are minor tweaks and improvements throughout this album that were not on the debut. The tracklist as a whole is more consistent, the playing is better and I think as a whole it has a better structure than the ... read more

New Order - Technique
75

I understand from a lot of people that this is the last acclaimed New Order album, coming out fittingly at the end of the eighties, Republic the album which followed this was met with a lot less acclaim and is considered to be the first real flop of their discography however I can not comment on this as I will admit to not having listened to it, the only other New Order I am familiar with is Power, Corruption and Lies which I enjoy quite a lot, so I was interested to see what this would be ... read more

Madonna - Music
50

I think I will keep this review brief, there are some good songs on here, I really like What It Feels Like For A Girl, Runaway Lover has a really good beat and it’s a pretty diverse record taking a lot of inspirations from electronic music and country music however with the beating said I think the production choices on this album really bring down what could have otherwise been a good album, the vocal effects used on Madonna throughout the album I think are utilised really poorly ... read more

MIKA - Life in Cartoon Motion
73

In the UK where I’m from at the time this came out it felt like every other song on the album became a big hit at the time. Grace Kelly, Lollipop, Love Today, Relax, Big Girl and Happy ending all felt pretty big at the time and for an album with so many hits, it feels like this album has largely been forgotten to time. This was the first album my parents got for me when I was a young kid and as a result of finding it dirt cheap on cd, I decided to re listen to it to see what I think all ... read more

Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez
85

I enjoyed this quite a bit, being a big fan of Denzel Curry and knowing that Denzel Curry was inspired a lot by the southern hip hop of this era and knowing this is considered a classic in that genre . I decided to take a listen and I really enjoyed this album the whole way through.
The first thing I noticed on this album is how forward thinking the production on this album, I think this album has deeply inspired a lot of the hip hop music we hear today, from the current trap movement of the ... read more

Lou Reed - Street Hassle
75

Definitely one of Lou Reed better solo albums, the album starts off really well, I really enjoy Gimme Some Good Times, Dirt I really love it has a really great, the guitar and the drums on that song is really great, as it is Lou reeds Performance. Street Hassle is definitely one of my favourite songs of all time, being a ten minute epic of a song about prostitution, split into three parts with a fantastic vocal performance from Lou Reed and a guest appearance from Bruce Springsteen, I would ... read more
