I put this record on shortly after waking up today and it was literally the perfect choice for this morning. the first side is incredibly serene and traditionally folksy in an almost fantastical way, like something a Hobbit would spin while blowing smoke rings and talking to old guys or whatever happens in those books. then on side B it switches up to a much groovier and catchy style, with some blues and rockabilly type vibes, sometimes even reminding me a bit of The Kinks on songs like The ... read more
I was really into this for the first few songs but it really lost me by the middle of the album, but it ends up sticking the landing which im very happy about. I especially love the song Love Me, its so so groovy bro
I think when it comes to this specific style of alt r&b im more of a Mk.gee girl than a Dijon one, but I still really enjoyed this! super cool and interesting production all around and I really like Dijon's vocals. the mixing is so uniquely calming to me. there's a lot of times where it really sounds like these songs were fully recorded live in a large open space on an iphone, in the best possible way. maybe they were, I dont know lol. it's very immersive either way. yay!
while I do really like The Dare's 2024 debut, What's Wrong With New York, and I think theres some great songs on it, theres definitely also a handful of tracks that come off as a little awkward in trying to replicate LCD Soundsystem's emotional core. The Dare is like if James Murphy had never heard of Talking Heads, and I think that works when it comes to club bangers like Girls, but then when he tries to go for a more ballad-like and emotionally resonant type of song like Murphy ... read more
after getting a fire new pair of Bose headphones for Christmas I decided to test them by listening to Aphex Twin. naturally, it sounded incredible, and i ended up in a day-long loop of listening to Windowlicker and tracks from Syro. now, the day after Christmas, im starting back down the IDM rabbit hole after seeing this EP recommended to me on my Apple Music homepage. unfortunately, I forgot to use my new headphones for this one, but it sounds great otherwise. super bouncy and fun while still ... read more
despite the popularity and acclaim of The Strokes, I've found surprisingly few acts within the 2000s post punk/garage rock revival scene that really carry their sound and energy. but fortunately for me, as a girl who personally absolutely loves the strokes, The Libertines do just that, but with a very classic British punk twist akin to The Clash or the Sex Pistols (I guess it's produced by Mick Jones for a reason), a combo that works most of the time. I also get some major hints of ... read more
over the past year Jamiroquai has gone from being a band that I knew one song from and heard about occasionally in passing to being one of my favorite bands period. im not saying theyre the greatest funk act in history, I think that would be disrespectful to the real classics like p-funk and the like, but they may have been the most consistently FUNKY bands out there. their first three albums especially just have this nonstop groovy and danceable energy that seriously cannot be topped in my ... read more
I was half asleep during this album so I dont have much to say but I really enjoyed having it on nonetheless. it definitely deserves a relisten at a time where my face isn't on my keyboard because it did sound super nice and im sure I'd enjoy it a lot more with my full attention. but its just a good vibe anyway. schweet!
sam is probably one of the sweetest online friends slash mutuals ive ever known and also happens to be incredibly talented in multiple fields!!!!!! this isn't a direction I expected her music to take but this is so fire dude. literally nailed it
I literally could not take this guy's seriously for the longest time because of his voice and adlibs, theyre just so funny. I always loved the beats but just couldn't get past it. however, miraculously, one day I tried putting a random westside song on and just didn't care about the vocals at all. theyre still funny as fuck, but I think ive just broken through that mental barrier that was keeping me from immersing myself in his music. turns out, I actually really love it. ... read more
its a shitty feeling to have done nothing all day, but its even shittier for me when I tried pretty hard to make progress on anything I could think of creatively. no new YouTube video, no new comic strip, no new music, didn't write anything, I even tried to relearn animation but got too frustrated with it. it wasn't a bad day, just an annoying one in that regard that's left me feeling kinda bleh. so I dont really know why I chose to put on a hardcore punk album, it wasn't ... read more
as much as I appreciate ag cook as a producer, I just could not get invested in this album very much at all. he's produced some really cool songs for singers like Charli on albums that I think were quite cutting edge for their time, and the whole PC Music/hyperpop aesthetic and soundscapes are still present here, but theres not a ton going on with Apple that I found very interesting. 2020 generally was a pretty stale and oversaturated year for hyperpop in my eyes so I guess this ... read more
I need to stop just saying I like albums when I review them because like. yeah. obviously. it's pretty obvious based on my rating distribution that I like nearly everything my ears come across. BUT LIKEEEEEEEE THIS IS REALLY GOOD!!!!! I especially enjoyed the first half but the second half might be just as good cuz I Lowkey tuned some of it out cuz I got distracted (this happens often). it's kind of rare that I name drop a single song off an album when discussing it but the song ... read more
Connor and Josh are two friends of mine and im very sorry to them that it took me this long to listen to this fully! everyone involved with this is very talented and this ep is bangers front to back. living proof that metalcore can still be good and not lame or corny
90s indie rock my beloved. thank you to my wonderful boyfriend for recommending this one to me! he'd played me a couple songs before and I liked them so I dont know why it took me this long to check it out. I dont have a ton to say except this is one of the most unique indie records of its era that ive heard. lots of fun instrument choices and interesting compositions/song structures. also, very catchy for the most part. hell yes
way back in middle school and through early high school, I was a HUGE fan of mcr. I didn't look like your typical emo kid, but lord did I feel like one. I especially loved Three Cheers and The Black Parade, but I never really liked Bullets much, even though I'm pretty sure I never even listened to this record fully, and that opinion stuck with me until today when I did finally give it that listen. this first mcr record is a lot different than the following three they would release. ... read more
I dont have a ton to say about this one. I just consistently really love what Frost Children have been doing for the past few years and I hope they just keep doing their thing and putting out bangers like this. thanks for reading buh bye
this is a great follow up to Nate's album from last year, Box for Buddy, Box For Star. is there a song on here that even closely rivals the magic of his song I'm All Fucked Up? not really. but does Holo Boy give me exactly what I wanted? yes. its very impressive to me how well this guy can embrace so many different styles and genres from track to track, all of which I enjoy, and still make a short, sweet, and cohesive little album out of it all. and of course im always a fiend for a ... read more
