what is he a fucking fish in a fish bowl? fucked up. he must be in so much pain. we have to save him #ReleaseTylerIntoTheOcean
I’m sorry, AOTY. I’ve been a bad, bad user. A horrible user. Some would even tell you I’m an evil user. Ever since I stepped foot on this paradise of a website in 2020, I’ve done nothing but wreak havoc across the lands. I’m kind of the Ezra Miller of albumoftheyear.org. Except, instead of kidnapping minors, I’ve ravaged your home with shitpost after shitpost and one-liner after one-liner for over four years. No one on this site can use it for more than a ... read more
Well guys, I’m fucked two ways upward Jerry Seinfeld style. Let’s just say this album was so good that it made me RAM my Toyota Journeyer 2002 into a couple guys outside Joey’s Swellington Barber Shop this past weekend. Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly what happened.
I was on a road trip with my wife and dog (yorkshire terrier, if you were wondering). We were just passing through the beautiful Michigan town of Swellington. As its name implies, the place is swell a ton. ... read more
Cameron Winter is my savior.
He is the reincarnation of music’s spirit, rising once again to save His art form from capitalist greed and falsehoods. While Jesus Christ is said to pass through our realm in spirit, Cameron Winter walks among the people, flesh and bone, as our one true god.
In a polyamorous marriage of talents between Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan, Cameron Winter was born. He channels their musical prowess, releasing it in a stream of melancholy beaming from ... read more
After Song Machine, I couldn’t wait to hear what Gorillaz was going to do next. It truly felt like they were back at it, and I figured they’d continue on their streak of bangers. But in 2023, tragedy struck once again. After a good few singles, Gorillaz dropped what I consider to be their worst album to date: “Cracker Island”. This record upsets me in a way that Humanz never did. Where Humanz was at least imitating Gorillaz greatness, Cracker Island seems void of ... read more
A couple years after the detour of The Now Now, Gorillaz began teasing a new project, titled “Song Machine”, by releasing quite a few new singles alongside their own respective music videos. Most of these singles were actually even better than anything on The Now Now, being incredibly fun, cartoony, well-produced, colorful, and the featured artists actually felt like they meshed well with whatever song they were on. After a few singles had been released, and anticipations were high, ... read more
If I had been a long-time hipster Gorillaz fan when Humanz dropped, I would have assumed that it was over for them. I would have declared the magic to be gone, and I would have packed up my bags and pursued some cool new up-and-coming band or something like that. Thankfully, though, I was only properly introduced to Gorillaz’s music in 2018, a year after Humanz, when they released “The Now Now”. I was also in eighth grade, so I wasn’t quite a hipster yet, but I loved it. ... read more
After releasing the single “DoYaThing” in collaboration with James Murphy and André 3000 (one of their best songs, by the way), Gorillaz took a well-deserved but disappointing hiatus. By the time they came back around with 2017’s “Humanz”, anticipation among fans had been building for quite a few years. So, did Damon and company deliver? ….Sort of. I understand that for a lot of fans, especially at the time of release, Humanz was enough. I mean, the ... read more
Many of Demon Days’ alternative quirks carry over to this release, Plastic Beach, despite it being a lot popper in comparison. It has an incredibly diverse sound palette and a wide range of colorful features, giving it a fittingly cartoonish energy not dissimilar to Demon Days, even if the latter sounds a lot darker. The political commentary on both records is cutting– I mean, the entire concept of Plastic Beach is a statement about the dangers of human waste to the world’s ... read more
Gorillaz’s music was a big part of my middle school years, but I was a fan in the sense that I would listen to literally anything they put out. I loved the characters, the story, the music, everything. It didn’t matter how it sounded or looked; it was Gorillaz, so it had to be good. Peak media literacy. But, now that I’m twenty years old, the dust has settled. I don’t listen to Gorillaz nearly as much as I used to. I’m able to properly judge the quality of all of ... read more
