Kinda like the 2018 version of t.A.T.u. - the fact that she's gay irl doesn't change that it's blatant male gaze-worthy hypersexualization of lipstick lesbianhood (see: her music video thumbnails).
there are more than 20 gay teens on aoty
UPDATE 6/11/18: The vocals at 2:36 are the most important thing to happen during Pride month
UPDATE 6/17/18: Gotta say one more nice thing about those vocals. I think when Anna Calvi and St. Vincent and even like Torres or Lianne La Havas were having their come-ups there was a lot of to-do (wanted or not) about "omg lady guitarists!!!!" Gotta hand it to Anna for really taking a risk with the singing at that section when she could've so ... read more
Watching y'all gradually falling off the hype train and realize this isn't actually that good gave me serious My Beautiful Melancholy flashbacks.
UPDATE 6/4/18 - 9:20 PM: Looks like it’s time to pretend it’s good again
the tempo's not actually any faster ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
UPDATE 6/23/18: "I'm so glad I came but I can't wait to leave" is a pretty accurate summary of my thoughts while in a gay club.
not related to this album I want to say that their cover of Tightrope is a far more egregious example of the "soul-less white cover" than Taylor Swift's September.
Got to be honest and say "Sunbathing Animal" made me want to never listen to a Parquet Courts album ever again. I get that minimalism was the aesthetic, but it didn't make the songs particularly good. The audacity to force me to sit through "Instant Disassembly" was the moment I decided a P4k BNM did not make a record "mandatory listening."
So I skipped Human Performance, but I must say on the whole this is a massive improvement. I'm really liking the more uptempo ... read more
my boyfriend has a crush on shawn mendes which i think is weird bc isn't he like 14
I'm trying to sublet a room in my house and the guy who came to look at it last night played this for me because "you like artsy stuff so you'll like this."
I said "Oh so this is what Princess Nokia was trying to do" and he was like "Who's that?"
Anyway I'm not gonna pick him bc I need the person to help look after my dog for a few weeks in July and he seems unreliable.
By no means a cure to the fact that they've been making the same record over and over since 2010 - just a particularly well-written set of songs in the style you already know (and maybe love if you're, y'know, still acting like you're in college despite being in your mid-30s).
Favorite tracks: Let's Run Away, Haunting Me
So obviously the two big talking points of this record with respect to her previous material are:
1. The songs are shorter
2. Stylistically it's all over the place
But honestly in a lot of ways I feel like one helps the other. With Mitski clearly singing from a different perspective across the songs, the variations in genre really help each track feel like it's a vignette coming from its own little universe. In that way, the album it reminds me of the most is actually The Magnetic Fields's ... read more
Criminally overlooked polyglot joyride melding the best of afro-funk, hard rock, and a whole lot more. Kushal Gaya's vocals honestly remind me of Serj Tankian at certain moments, especially when keyboardist Yoshino Shigihara comes in with that Daron Malakian high harmony. Even the quieter moments have something rhythmically or melodically exciting, like the airy layers and 5/4 time signature of "Dance of the Crickets," or the triumphant climax of "Twist My Head." The uptempo ... read more
The first album I ever bought with my own money. They only became cooler when they partnered with Bionicle for the next record.
Favorite Songs: My Paper Heart, Swing Swing, Time Stands Still, One More Sad Song, Why Worry
"I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Them Until They Are Off Our Lands!"
I can't believe it's been 25 years since this album Made Me Gay.
