When I was in high school there was this girl in the grade below me who kind of looked like Taylor Swift and was also infamous for being friendly in a group setting but really mean to people privately. My senior year she went on a date with a guy from my grade and apparently spent the whole night making fun of his stutter. I know it's unfair to let that story affect my listening to this song but that's immediately what I think of when she sings "you should take it as a compliment that I ... read more
While I wouldn't say this album is Björk's Pablo Honey, I don't necessarily agree with its inclusion in what's generally regarded as the "classic Björk" canon (everything before Medulla). It's quite obvious here that Björk was still figuring out her sound - one she wouldn't quite perfect until 1995's Post. The material on Debut, however, often curdles into bland 90s dance tunes that only stick out because of the eccentric lyrics and vocals placed on top of them. ... read more
i feel like some of u wait until anthony fantano posts his review so you can shape your review here around his opinion :) :) :) :)
**fully willing to admit I'm jumping on this train bc of melon but y'all the number of times I've listened to "Take Me as I Am" in the past week omfg**
Kids born in the mid/late 90s have a hard time accepting that they aren't true 90s kids - sure we were born in that decade, but most pop culture we identify with skews more closely to the early 2000s than the 90s. We openly admit the irony of our nostalgia for eras we weren't alive for (Stranger Things, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lana Del Rey, ... read more

Aa great as Ibeyi's self-titled record - a heartfelt but hooky meditation on the deaths of their father and sister - was, I was excited to hear what the duo could come up with when dealing in less somber subject matter. Unfortunately Ash, which makes a predictable move into political territory, frequently muddles its messages, and seldom has the musical power to compensate.
Ibeyi previously hinted at this more political direction with an appearance in Beyonce's "Lemonade," as part ... read more
So Kesha is the official winner of the "pop singers going (back to) Country" movement huh.
For once St Vincent is copying Torres and not the other way around with the whole "ass on the right side of the album cover" thing.
i bet there wont b any cussing
EDIT: I stand corrected, apparently she says 'shit' on track 3. All hail edgy swift.
Remember when Rihanna released Good Girl Gone Bad but didn't actually 'go bad' until a few years later? Ten years on, it looks like Taylor Swift is trying the same route. Unfortunately, this isn't exactly "Umbrella," and also doesn't exactly bode well for the return of Taylor Swift.
"Ooh, look what you made me do," she repeats on the chorus. Do what, exactly? Put her whole catalogue on Spotify right before Katy Perry's album dropped in an obvious attempt to damage sales? ... read more
I'm fairly certain most people were on Team Alice during the great Crystal Castles split of 2014-2015, especially as former bandmate Ethan Kath began releasing childish statements trivializing Glass's involvement with the band. He came off as both an egomaniac and a hypocrite - for someone so quick to minimize Glass's contributions, he had no problem recruiting a Glass-soundalike to take over vocal duties for their limp, unremarkable fourth album.
Glass, meanwhile, laid low, releasing a ... read more
"Call Me When You're Sober" by Evanescence > this entire album
While I pull away from this record with more pros than cons, it's unfortunately not the quantum leap forward that the singles suggested. Although this is still more than a worthy addition to the Zola Jesus catalogue, and I definitely hope she continues in this direction, it's hard not to think Okovi could have been much more.
Too often, Zola relapses into the sounds and ideas she's already milked dry. "Veka" doesn't offer enough creative concepts to justify its five-minute runtime, ... read more
I think it's great that, even in these politically divisive times we're living in, we can still come together and agree that this is pretty bad.
