One of her most melodically straightforward songs since her debut. It's nice to hear Torres sing over a big arena-rock style track like this, which is somewhat unexplored territory from the experimental hybrids she tends to pursue. Probably the most hyped I have been for one of her records since Sprinter.
Yes i know this is just nostalgia bating for millennials in their late 20s/early 30s but I still stan. Critiques like the ones this has received make me question my ability to even listen to music because I'm not really hearing the problems with her vocals everyone is talking about. Yeah, her tone on the chorus is a little sharp but for the most part I can really get behind it - certainly miles ahead of anything her brother has put out.
Of all the Whitney uptempos, this one just completely takes the cake in my opinion.
I can't believe I ever let Sam Smith's stupid pronoun-free cover of it cloud my perception.
When that snare and guitar kick in right before the chorus I just feel like I could climb Mount Everest.
One of those 80s hits that would sound just as good if all the revivalism of the past 10 years hadn't happened.
Wish I hadn't looked up the lyrics cause I always thought she was saying "Oh, Whitney!" at ... read more
Colleen is paid dust more than any of her other songs and I am tired of it!! If it had been on Ys or HOOM it would be everyone's favorite track but since it's on this little extracurricular release you all feel free to write it off. Even the Joanna fandom kinda treats it as a meme song because of the "hup!" parts but compositionally and lyrically it is PERFECT 10 OUT Of 10 YUP YUP YUP YUP MHMM MHMM SHE ATE THAT UP.
END COLLEEN ERASURE!!
Favorite Tracks: All 3
I remember in 2015 when everyone expected their favorite millionaire to be some kind of socialist icon, then in the late 2010s it seemed a lot of celebrities caught wind of this and started making (extremely shallow) efforts to be just that. See Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm," Kendall Jenner's Pepsi ad, Taylor Swift finally making steps to assert an anti-Trump stance.
It's hard not to lump Marina Diamandis's "Purge the Poison" into this phenomenon when it explicitly ... read more
The best song from this era, even as it recycles tropes he's held in his music for nearly a decade now. Like "Tonya Harding," the melody is just too good to ignore.
A perfect foil to the first single and also probably one of her best songs ever. Not since "Prince Johnny" have I been this enamored with a pre-release song of hers. Against all odds, this era is shaping up to be pretty good.
Dang, the critical energy is high on this site lately. How is it that every single album except one on the homepage this week has a 71 or lower? I thought we were trying to differentiate ourselves from RYM??
I honestly find this infinitely more enjoyable than Soil almost purely on the principle of not being depressing. There's really only about 8 fully-formed tunes here, and the whole thing ends before the 30-minute mark, but hearing an offering of love songs from Josiah Wise is nothing to ... read more
Contrarian losers will try to tell you this version is superior to the commercially released one but they are wrong. Let's do a side-by-side comparison:
Extraordinary Machine: Tie (same version on both albums)
Get Him Back: Elizondo Version (Punchier, effects give it a good When the Pawn tie-in)
O' Sailor: Elizondo Version (More focused, not as indulgent)
Better Version of Me: Brion Version (Wackier, more interesting)
Tymps/Used to Love Him: Elizondo Version (the explosion of the bridge is too ... read more
All these Fiona comparisons have u guys looking like you only know like 3 of the art girls.
Good purely on the premise that it eradicates the completely obnoxious way she sang "he pulled out a RANG and said“ on the original
stupid horse?? more like one trick pony! *holds up hand for a high five*
The comeback single we needed. "Good Side" had me worried this album was going to be a slightly more self-aware version of Somebody's Miracle, but this has all the off-kilter writing and classic rock referentiality we always loved from Phair with updated production and an observer perspective that prevents the track from coming off as Exile rehash.
Pitchfork's infamous 0.0 review opened with them declaring that Phair was unable to write a perfect pop song - well, that's what we get ... read more
I feel bullied by this song.
Remember how a million people tried to usurp Nicki’s queen of female rap title and only Cardi was able to do it after years of barb hegemony? And now it seems like she already needs to do some style-chasing of her own? That’s what happens when you open Pandora’s Box baby!!
Only gripe is that the bridge melody (which has multiple repeats) feels a little tedious and uninteresting. Is she worried that using syncopated rhythms is cultural appropriation, too??
Besides that... their best single since "Wait For a Minute."
serpentwithfeet delivers his most straightforward single yet, with a singable chorus and relaxed atmosphere. Where last year's Apparition EP hunkered down into quarantine malaise, this song opts for escapism amidst plucking kalimbas and a surprisingly nimble rhythm. It's an evolution I didn't expect, but one I'm excited for.
I guess it's time for me to come out as someone who didn't really care for Soil. I was hoping he would expand the experimental baroque soul of his EP, but that record ... read more
Is this an old song? I don't know how she's linking up with big name producers and yet her vocals still sound like they were recorded on an iPhone.
I've tried mentally cancelling AB many times but I'm not going to pretend I don't listen anytime she drops a new track, if only to maybe catch a brief glimmer of what made her great in the first place. This is definitely in the upper 50th percentile of her post-2018 output but that's... not saying much. There's actually a workable hook here, but ... read more
Listened to my first AJR song just to understand what all these comparisons were.
This song is alright but if I had to shit on miss Dua for putting the sad/mad/bad rhyme scheme in the chorus then I gotta shit on this too. Actually I think I'm going to grow to resent this song more over time because it represents a mindset that I've been in for a while that is so unproductive and self-pitying. Melody is good tho.
I know with quantization, pitch correction etc. it's almost easier to make "pretty" music than it is to make "ugly" music but goddam this thing is just shimmering. Sections of it have me in my choral music bag and I guess fans of the popular contemporary dudes like Whitacre and Lauridsen should love this thing but really I find myself consistently hypnotized. This is Barwick stretching "ambient" to its limits, especially on songs like "Flowers" (which is ... read more
