I defended this song for a long time because I thought it was just fun and carefree. It's Miley having a good time - why hate?
Then, this weekend my boyfriend and I finally sat down and watched a season of RuPaul's Drag Race (season six - when the show had found its rhythm but before it truly sold out), and, honestly, I loved it. I think I had avoided watching it for a long time because I was afraid of being a gay stereotype, but the show's camp, humor, and fashion immediately won me over. ... read more
Please Lorde give us new music this year I am SICK and TIRED of all these replicas trying to do it like you please please girl you are way too young to be taking these massive breaks between albums meanwhile some flashy new artist comes in and does their best impression of you please Lorde it is 2021 and I am still listening to Ribs.
LDR fans: Please mother give us hard beats
LDR: how about 30 seconds of softbrushed solo jazz drums
Remember when Pitchfork gave this a 4.8 and criticized the dolphin noises in the opening paragraph then gave Fiona a 10 for an album that also has dolphin noises?
I've never understood why this seems to be such a maligned record in her catalogue. There are some fans of hers who really scream bloody murder if she uses a studio effect or gets within 10 feet of a synthesizer. And here she was on Far, working with Mike Elizondo and Jeff Lynne. Beyond the rattling effects of "Machine" ... read more
Wow, she really revealed the beginning and end of this album's divergence when she dropped "IPHONE," huh?
The bops bop but sadly this doesn't have nearly the level of conceptualism or creativity that I had been hoping for, and maybe even starts to make her come off as a one trick pony. "Let it Out" is another solid edition to her harder canon, but it offers literally nothing that wasn't better-presented on 2018's "Rage." "Loser" offers some much-needed ... read more
Overly indulgent and unnecessary. Also can we admit that "Bed Song" is just Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" for people who unironically enjoy Rent?
reminds me of my days in Hebrew school when one of the kids would be like "The Beatles SUCK" because they knew it would piss off the adults in the room
Ok honestly this is why we love her. So much weirdness and creativity and profound sadness masked underneath a beat only she would sound good over. Between this and her 2019 output she has proven what was already clearly suggested by Whack World - all she had to do was make a full length song to take over.
Laura comes through with a verse about being misgendered by an older man. Sean comes through with a verse that references the only song of theirs that people remember.
Those last 30 seconds are absolutely something 15 year old me would have raged out to in my room. That is all.
isn't their drummer a huge trump supporter now
For at least the third time this year I am letting Netflix dictate my taste in music. Decided to give this album a shot when I was blown away by the song at the end of The Haunting of Bly Manor, and was stunned to look it up and find it was by... Sheryl freaking Crow.
Ultimately that song ("I Shall Believe") is definitely the highlight - a pleading ballad that never builds to true catharsis and instead stays in its night-welcoming atmosphere. Actually the ballads in general carry ... read more
Remember when she announced "God is a Woman" and there was some conservative backlash about "blah blah blah get this feminist garbage away from me" but then it turned out the song was pretty much just about having a bomb ass p-word? This feels like a slightly more sophisticated version of that (even if GIAW is ultimately the superior track).
But anyway this is good. I like the plucked strings and the cautious atmosphere that gets built across the track. Not a tier 1 Ari ... read more
"My Agenda" takes all my least-favorite aspects of Flamboyant and brings them front and center. Almost none of the ideas feel fully fleshed out, the vocals are frequently inscrutable, and many songs just kinda meander around ideas that either end abruptly (Sorry Bro (I Love You)), or awkwardly lurch into something different ("Ram it Down"). And while I know we're all busy jerking off Dylan Brady, umru and all these hyperpop producers... their ideas reach diminishing returns ... read more
I always wind up eating my words with her lead singles so maybe I'll go back on this, but it kind of just feels like NFR runoff. All the bases of what make an LDR song in 2020 are covered. but are occasionally directly derived from older work - the chorus has echoes of "Blue Jeans" while the succeeding guitar has echoes of "Mariners Apartment Complex." Throw in an obligatory reference to a 70s-80s artist (Prince, this time) and the trappings are all there. Sonically, the ... read more
A minor footnote in the Karen-ization of LDR. Had no idea these kind of stomp-clap vaguely folky but ultimately big production faux-acoustic songs were still in style, but maybe that's the point. Trying to hunt for lyrical value in "my cigarette burnt my finger cause I forgot I lit it" though? Yeesh...
I dunno man, it's... pretty? And if you like the fuzzy triangle synths of "Video Game" you'll be happy to know it appears on at least two other songs. Actually if you like repeated ideas in general you will love this thing.
The sonic pallet of this record shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone who's listened to Stevens's post-Age of Adz output. He has steadily stuck to lanes of electronic, folk, and, when he's feeling ambitious, electronic folk. The formula hasn't actually shifted ... read more
Decent return from one of my former favorite groups. Maybe what they lose here is it's not quite as hooky as something like "Water Fountain" or even "Look at Your Hands," plus their noisy new setup (full drums, distorted bass and swaths of pianos) isn't always as thrilling as the looping pedal mania of previous releases, but an expectedly killer vocal performance from Garbus carries the tune enough to make it enjoyable.
Lyrically the group continues to broach themes of ... read more
Her voice was like specifically contoured to sing this song omg.
Big recommend for people who were losing interest near the end of All Mirrors only to be blown away by "Chance."
