山岡晃 [Akira Yamaoka] - Silent Hill 2 (Original Soundtracks)
100

I have never played a Silent Hill game before however, this soundtrack does exactly what it is supposed to. Which is making me feel like I am in the world of Silent Hill and that is how you know a soundtrack does its job effectively making you feel like you are there even if you have no experience with the subject material and after listening to multiple Silent Hill soundtracks, I know that Akira Yamato’s is an excellent composer for the series that can immerse you in a series even when ... read more

Opeth - Blackwater Park
88

My introduction to Opeth was through their 2003 album Damnation which is a different sound from the majority of the band’s work. I’ve listened to most of their discography and the thing I’ve come to admire is how well they can execute both harsh; heavy death/prog metal vocals and instrumentals, into a much cleaner almost soft sound all within the same song which applies to a majority of Blackwater Park. The Leper Affinity might be one of my favorite metal songs ever made with ... read more

Metallica - St. Anger
25

Initially I left this as the album with the trash can, but that in reality is a minor but easy to pick out problem with the album. To me the snare isn’t actually all that bad because bands from the same and similar genres of metal ( mainly by metal) already use the same sounding snare and it can be a compliment to the overall sound of songs. The problem with st. Anger’s snare is the production has it in your face and makes you look at it like it’s your fault for including it. ... read more

Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains
100

This is my favorite AIC album and it is almost solely for Layne’s performance and how grimy/gritty his voice can get along with the instrumentals which complement each other like I feel their other projects up to this point had done. The example I would go with is Sludge Factory and the somber tone that Layne has going on for the verses and the book having a haunting presence. There are also some bangers like Again and the softer sounding duet on Heaven Beside You.

Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo 2
90

That is NOT Alfredo, 0/10.

Type O Negative - October Rust
85

I became Peter Steele after this.

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
94

The most impressive thing for me isn’t just this being somebodies debut solo project, but also how it still sounds like something that could be released today 27 years later due to just the pristine production.

Tyler, The Creator - DON'T TAP THE GLASS
85

I am tapping the glass as we SPEAK!!!

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
85

WAAAAAAARRRRRR!!!!!

96

The thing for me that makes this a classic is how Rick Rubin makes Reign in Blood sound timeless production wise compared to a lot of albums that came out both before and after.

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
86

The sound of this is so nasty and raw which I love in thrash and makes this stand out from some of their contemporaries at the time. For the first album with a new lineup and style Cowboys from Hell really delivers in an energetic and raw performance from Phil vocally as well as some solos from Dimebag who really shines through the songs on here. The only real complaint I have is songs like Primal Concrete Sledge, Medicine Man, and the Sleep don’t add anything to the experience and can ... read more

Television - Marquee Moon
95

Every now and then Spotify will recommend an album to me that I have not heard and even then I won’t always be that interested to check it out. I had not heard of this album or the band Television before so this was a shot in the dark on if I would actually enjoy this or not anf I am glad I chose to check it out. The big stand out was definitely the guitar composition throughout and how much it actually made each song stand out from one another. I also really like the vocal performance on ... read more

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
80

This was definitely different from the music that I have been listening to so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was able to enjoy the album. I don’t have much experience with electronic music so I honestly was expecting something like Daft Punk or even Death Grips but it really is just edm music and it’s pretty good edm. The only song I didn’t really like was Logan Rock Witch as I thought it was really annoying.

Primus - Pork Soda
85

Pork Soda is by far the darkest PRIMUS album from both the sound and especially the lyrics/storytelling with songs like My Name is Mud and Bob. Each song here is unique in their sound and no song sounds like another which can be very difficult to do for a 14 track album. Like usual the baselines here are phenomenal with the part around 3 minutes in Nature Boy being my favorite from the album as well as the band. I don’t think Bob would be as interesting of a song if it wasn’t for ... read more

Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
95

At first I thought Like Clockwork was a little overrated and nowhere near Queens’ best, but after repeated listens I will say I stand corrected. The writing and imagery each song possesses is the real stand out instead of sonically sounding interesting which the album still manages to do without taking anything away from Homme’s writing and vocal performance. There’s a nice blend between high energy pop-rock and the more slowed down melodic songs like Vampire and moments in ... read more

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
91

I first listened to this and couldn’t get through the first song because I was so used to the two albums after so the intro song being a more slowed down and drawn out experience took some time getting used to. However, this might be my favorite Sabbath album solely due to atmosphere and how Ozzy sounds here; since he doesn’t have that layering on his voice it sounds a lot more menacing and the album has a more haunting tone because of it and that’s why I love it so much. Even ... read more

TOOL - Undertow
87

I like this era more than the 10,000 Days and Fear Innoculum because Undertow doesn’t waste time for the most part and uses the time each song has to its most without overdoing it (with one exception). Songs like Sober and Prison Sex are so good and are the real stand outs from the album and elevate Undertow into a phenomenal album just from the first half. Disgustipated however, should not exist on this album because it serves no purpose to me, I hate that it is 15 minutes long where ... read more

The Strokes - The New Abnormal
82

I have not been too crazy on the Strokes, what I had heard has been hit or miss and didn’t think they were as good as people had claimed. The New Abnormal I knew was praised a lot and I will say I thought the album was very good and much more interesting and diverse in the indie sound. The use of synths are a hit or miss with me, I know at the door is a favorite for people but I am not much of a fan of the synths used and couldn’t really get into it. That being said, the rest of the ... read more

Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
90

Nightmare both the album and song itself are so good from front to back that develop over the course of their run time with a balance in heavier metal segments mixed with melodic moments. Even though they lost their original drummer, Mike Portnoy doed a fantastic job with what the Rev had written down and kind of made the album what it is. The 1hr+ runtime doesn’t undervalue that time and uses it to the fullest capacity without ever doing too much. God Hates Us might be my favorite A7X ... read more

Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
83

When I first started listening to AIC, I thought I would never want to check out the post-Layne stuff because I thought it would never be the same, I was very surprised once I listened to BGWTB and now the post-Layne songs are some of my favorite AIC songs. Duvall is a very good fit for the band and I actually think the band’s sound got a lot darker with Duvall added in; Im not saying lyrically they have gotten darker, but the actual sound and mood that goes on in this album and ... read more
